Product Description

A spanner-shaped shadow patrolling the clear streams of Southeast Asia.

Buy Spanner Barb (Barbodes lateristriga) online: an active, striking schooling barb for spacious tropical community tanks with robust tank mates and stable water.

  • Water conditions: Spanner Barbs prefer a mature, stable tropical aquarium with plenty of oxygen and moderate water movement. Aim for 22–26°C (71–79°F), pH 6.0–7.5 and soft to medium-hard water around 2–15 dGH. Because they originate from flowing streams, good surface agitation and a filter that turns over the tank volume several times per hour are beneficial, but avoid excessive blasting current. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate low through regular maintenance; a 25–30% partial water change each week is a sensible baseline for a well-stocked group. Use a reliable heater and thermometer, and make changes gradually to avoid temperature or pH swings. A tight-fitting lid is essential because Spanner Barbs are capable jumpers, especially when newly acclimated or startled. Quarantine new arrivals before adding them to a community tank, and monitor water quality closely during the first few weeks.
  • Suitable tank mates: Keep Spanner Barbs in a group of at least six to eight individuals; schooling reduces stress and spreads any playful nipping. They are robust, active fish that can reach around 15–18 cm as adults, so choose tank mates of similar size and temperament. Good options include larger rasboras, danios, rainbowfish, botiid loaches, and peaceful, robust cichlids from similar water conditions. Avoid tiny tetras, guppies, bettas, and slow or long-finned species that may be bullied or have their fins nipped. A 120 cm (4 ft) tank is a practical minimum for a group, with 250–300 litres or more giving adults room to swim. Provide open swimming space plus broken lines of sight with driftwood, rocks and robust plants. Introduce new fish carefully, and avoid overcrowding; Spanner Barbs are energetic and need territory to move without constant conflict.
  • Feeding habits: Spanner Barbs are omnivores and do best on a varied diet rather than a single staple food. Offer a quality sinking or slow-sinking pellet or flake as the base, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Include vegetable matter regularly—blanched spinach, zucchini, cucumber or spirulina-based foods—to support digestion and condition. Feed two to three small meals a day, giving only what the group can clear in two to three minutes, and remove uneaten food to protect water quality. A fasting day once a week can help prevent overfeeding, especially in mature tanks. Watch body condition: adults should look full but not bloated. Because they are active schoolers, they compete enthusiastically at feeding time, so check that slower tank mates receive their share.
  • Care requirements: Spanner Barbs are active, social fish that suit experienced beginners and up, provided their adult size and energy are planned for. Set up a spacious tank with smooth sand or rounded gravel, driftwood, rocks and robust plants; leave generous open water for swimming. Moderate lighting and floating plants can help them feel secure. Acclimate carefully using the drip method or a slow addition of tank water, and keep the group together to reduce stress. They are not delicate, but they need stable water, good filtration and regular maintenance. Watch for aggression or fin-nipping if the group is too small or the tank is cramped; increasing the school size and adding visual barriers usually helps. Because they can jump, keep the lid secure. Spanner Barbs grow steadily, so plan for their adult size and avoid nano aquariums. They are a rewarding choice for a large, well-maintained tropical community with robust tank mates.
