Setup & Compatibility

Aquarium size & grouping

Suggested starting minimum: a 20-gallon long aquarium with a footprint of at least 30 × 12 inches. Floor space and usable grazing surfaces matter more than tank height. For the recommended group of five to six, choose a larger aquarium at least 32 inches long, with multiple separate resting and feeding areas. These fish may defend favored stones and food patches; provide room for individuals to retreat and check that every fish gets food.

Flow, oxygen & temperature

Provide clean, well-filtered water with strong current, vigorous surface agitation and high oxygen availability. Include sheltered areas outside the strongest flow so fish can rest. Extra aeration can help, especially in warm conditions. Suggested temperature range for review: 68–75°F (20–24°C). Avoid prolonged overheating and warm, oxygen-poor conditions.

Substrate & decor

Use sand or smooth gravel with rounded stones and rocks that offer broad grazing surfaces. Provide hiding places and several distinct territories. A mature aquarium with established algae and biofilm is preferable to a newly set-up, bare tank. Lighting can encourage natural algae growth on grazing surfaces.

Feeding

Do not rely on this fish to survive as an algae cleaner alone. Supplement natural grazing with sinking algae or spirulina foods and suitable gel foods. Offer small portions of appropriate frozen foods as dietary variety, and verify that each fish accepts the foods provided. Spread food across several feeding areas to reduce competition.

Compatible tankmates

Choose peaceful fish with overlapping cool-water, oxygen and current requirements. White Cloud Mountain Minnows and suitable small danio species are candidates, subject to checking the needs of the exact species. Avoid large or aggressive fish, fish requiring consistently warmer water, and bottom-dwellers that monopolize food or resting surfaces. Compatibility depends on aquarium size, layout and individual behavior, not just species.
