Product Description

Bring confident movement to a mid-sized freshwater aquarium with a cichlid that patrols open water and claims its own sheltered corners. At around 7 cm when fully mature, Cichla Marinae ‘Fogo’ adds a noticeable presence without dominating the layout.

Arrange rocks and driftwood to create retreats alongside open swimming space. Pale sand or fine gravel gives its natural ventral patterning a clear backdrop, while an asymmetric arrangement helps break sightlines.

  • Shelter-rich aquascape: Smooth driftwood, leaf litter, rock crevices, terracotta pots or stacked slate offer places to retreat and establish territories.
  • Water and flow: Soft, slightly tinted water, diffuse overhead lighting and gentle, low-turbulence filtration suit its described habitat.
  • Plant options: Resilient stem or carpeting plants add cover and can be arranged around the fish’s preferred shelters.
  • Flexible feeding: Offer measured portions of sinking pellets and finely crushed flakes, with occasional frozen daphnia or brine shrimp.
  • Tank mates: Choose calm fish of a similar scale; avoid overtly aggressive species and long-finned tank mates that may provoke defensive striking.
  • Territorial and breeding behavior: It patrols structures by day and may form pairs, display courtship and guard eggs in stable systems with secure zones.
  • Routine care: Regular partial water exchanges help maintain consistent dissolved minerals and trace elements.

With its pale substrate and layered shelters, the aquarium becomes a natural stage for watching this cichlid move between open water and its chosen retreat.
