Fishkeeping Questions, Answered

What is FishyHub?

FishyHub is an aquarium marketplace and community for fishkeepers, with 500+ sellers and 20,000+ products worldwide. Besides shopping for fish, plants and supplies, you can read fish care guides, share your tank on the Feed and give away or find free fish and aquarium items.

What are good aquarium fish for beginners?

Hardy, peaceful fish such as guppies, platies, corydoras, many tetras and bettas (kept on their own) are good places to start. Our fish care guides and the Add Fish tool help you pick fish that suit your tank.

How do I set up my first aquarium?

Choose a tank size and type that suit the fish you want, add a filter, a heater for tropical fish, substrate and plants, and let the tank cycle for a few weeks before adding fish. The Build New Tank tool asks about the aquarium, size, style, budget and experience level you have in mind and recommends a setup.

Where can I learn how to care for my fish?

FishyHub's fish care guides cover species care, tank setup and everyday fishkeeping, and the Feed has videos and tips from sellers and fishkeepers.

How do FishyHub giveaways work?

Hobbyists list fish and aquarium items they are giving away for free; buying and selling are not allowed. Browse giveaways near you and contact the owner if you are interested.

Popular Aquarium Fish in Singapore

Species vary in adult size, temperament, water requirements and compatibility, so choose fish that suit your aquarium and your experience.

Betta Fish

Bettas are loved for their vivid colours, flowing fins and individual personalities, with varieties such as Halfmoon, Plakat, Giant, Crowntail and wild-type Bettas. Male Bettas are highly territorial, so keep them on their own or with carefully chosen, peaceful tankmates.

Guppies, Mollies & Platies

Livebearers such as Guppies, Mollies and Platies are hardy, colourful and a popular first fish. They breed readily, so plan for fry or keep a single sex if you do not want the tank to fill up.

Goldfish & Koi

Goldfish come in many ornamental varieties, including Ranchu, Oranda and Ryukin. Koi are larger ornamental carp usually kept in ponds. Both produce a lot of waste, so they need generous space, strong filtration and regular water changes.

Community Fish

Small, peaceful fish such as Tetras, Rasboras and Corydoras are the heart of a community aquarium. Most are shoaling fish that are happiest and most colourful in groups of six or more, so check group size, adult size and temperament before mixing species.

Arowana, Channa & Monster Fish

Experienced hobbyists keep larger and predatory species such as Arowana, Channa and other monster fish. They need much larger aquariums, a tight-fitting lid and more careful planning than typical community fish.

Shrimp & Snails

Freshwater shrimp and snails add colour and help clean up algae and leftover food, especially in planted and nano tanks. Larger or carnivorous fish will eat shrimp, so keep them in a shrimp-only tank or with small, peaceful fish. Shrimp are also sensitive to sudden changes and to copper, so keep water stable and check medications before use.

Marine Fish & Corals

Marine aquariums, from fish-only tanks to full reef systems, need stable salinity, strong filtration and more equipment than freshwater setups. Start with hardy species such as Clownfish and add corals once the tank is mature and stable. Clownfish host anemones in the wild but do not need one in the aquarium, and an anemone adds complexity a beginner's tank is better without.

Planted Aquariums & Aquascaping

Aquatic plants transform an aquarium visually while giving fish and shrimp shelter and helping keep the water clean. Depending on your aquascape, you may choose:

  • Foreground plants for carpets and low-growing areas
  • Midground plants for transitions and focal points
  • Background plants for height and dense planting
  • Epiphytes and mosses for attaching to rocks and driftwood
  • Floating plants for surface cover and shade

When choosing plants, consider lighting, substrate, CO₂, growth rate and the livestock in your tank.

Setting Up Your First Aquarium

Choose the tank for the fish you want to keep, based on their adult size rather than the size they are sold at. A larger volume of water is also more stable, while small tanks need more careful stocking and maintenance.

  • Add a filter sized for the tank, plus substrate, decor and plants.
  • Cycle the tank for a few weeks before adding fish, so beneficial bacteria can build up.
  • Add fish gradually rather than all at once.
  • In Singapore's warm climate many tropical fish need no heater, but some shrimp and cooler-water species may need a fan or chiller to keep the temperature stable.

Not sure where to start? The Build New Tank tool asks about the aquarium, size, style, budget and experience level you have in mind and recommends a setup. Prefer professional help? FishyHub also offers aquarium setup, aquascaping and maintenance services.

Feeding Your Fish

Most aquarium fish do well fed once or twice a day, with only as much as they finish within a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is one of the most common causes of poor water quality.

  • Use a quality flake or pellet food as the staple diet.
  • Add variety with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworms.
  • Give bottom dwellers such as Corydoras and Plecos sinking food that reaches the bottom.
  • Match food size to your fish: fry and nano fish need much finer food than large cichlids.

Keeping Your Aquarium Healthy

  • Change part of the water regularly instead of all at once.
  • Feed small amounts your fish finish quickly, as uneaten food fouls the water.
  • Rinse filter media in old tank water, not tap water, to keep its bacteria alive.
  • Test the water when fish behave unusually, and act early.
  • Quarantine new fish before adding them to an established tank.

Our fish care guides cover species care, tank setup and common problems in more detail.
