Central American Mangrove Estuary

Where rivers meet the sea along the coasts of Central America, a brackish world of mangrove roots and tidal pools shelters a community of fish and invertebrates found nowhere else. The water here is constantly shifting — slightly salty, sun-warmed, and rich with organic life. The species that thrive in this zone are remarkably adaptable, tolerant of both freshwater and brackish conditions, and full of personality.

Mollies are among the most adaptable fish in the hobby, equally at home in fresh, brackish, or even marine water; their sailfin varieties are particularly striking. Figure Eight Puffers are charismatic and intelligent — they recognise their keeper and beg for food, though their nippy nature requires careful stocking choices. Rainbow Crabs are bold, semi-terrestrial invertebrates that add a land dimension to the setup. Archer Fish are remarkable — they literally spit jets of water to knock insects from overhanging vegetation and need a tank with airspace above the waterline. A gentle salt addition (1–3 ppt) benefits all species in this collection.
