Yellow Blaze Cichlid (Otopharynx Lithobates)

Lake Malawi’s blue cichlid wears a sudden blaze of yellow.

The Yellow Blaze Cichlid (Otopharynx lithobates) is a striking, semi-aggressive Malawi cichlid ideal for alkaline aquariums with ample swimming space.

• Water conditions: Replicate the alkaline, mineral-rich waters of Lake Malawi with a stable pH of 7.8–8.6, general hardness around 10–20 dGH, and a temperature of 24–27°C (75–81°F). Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and aim for nitrate below 20 ppm through regular maintenance. Moderate to strong water movement is beneficial, as these cichlids appreciate high dissolved oxygen levels. Use sand or fine gravel over a rock-and-open-water aquascape, and only add cichlid mineral buffers if your source water is very soft. Stability matters more than chasing exact numbers, so avoid swinging pH or temperature during water changes. A tightly fitting lid is essential because these fish can jump when startled.
• Suitable tank mates: This is a semi-aggressive haplochromine that can become territorial, especially when breeding, so choose companions of similar size and temperament. Good options include peaceful to moderately assertive Malawi peacocks such as Aulonocara species, milder haplochromines like Copadichromis, Placidochromis and Lethrinops, and robust catfish such as Synodontis species. Avoid highly aggressive mbuna, very small fish that may be eaten, and other Otopharynx or similarly marked blue-and-yellow haps that could trigger cross-breeding or excessive rivalry. A harem group of one male to three or four females works well; in larger tanks, multiple males can be kept with plenty of females and visual barriers. Always quarantine new arrivals and monitor the group for bullying.
• Feeding habits: The Yellow Blaze Cichlid is an omnivore with plankton-feeding tendencies, so offer a varied diet rather than a single food. Use a high-quality Malawi cichlid pellet or flake as the staple, including spirulina-rich formulas for balanced vegetable matter. Supplement with frozen or live mysis, brine shrimp, daphnia and cyclops, plus occasional bloodworm. Feed small amounts once or twice daily, only as much as the fish can clear in one to two minutes, and avoid fatty mammalian proteins such as beef heart. Juveniles in the 4–7 cm range benefit from several small feeds per day to support steady growth. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloating and poor water quality, so resist the urge to overdo it.
• Care requirements: Provide a tank of at least 300 litres or 4 feet in length for a harem, with larger quarters always preferable for adult males. Create open swimming space alongside rockwork and caves that break lines of sight and give females somewhere to retreat. Run strong biological and mechanical filtration, perform 25–30% weekly water changes with temperature-matched water, and vacuum the substrate to remove waste. Acclimatise new fish by drip method over 30–45 minutes and keep aquarium lighting subdued during introduction to reduce stress. Watch for aggression daily; if one fish is persistently chased, rearrange decor or rehome the aggressor. These mouthbrooders can breed readily, so plan for holding females and avoid mixing similar species if you do not want hybrids. The 4–7 cm specimens offered here are juveniles, often unsexed, and will develop the male’s vivid blue body and yellow blaze as they mature.
