Product Description

Crimson-crowned and territorial, this Lake Malawi rock dweller guards its crevice with attitude.

The Red Top Ndumbi Cichlid is a striking, semi-aggressive Malawi mbuna with vivid red-topped fins, ideal for experienced keepers of rocky African cichlid tanks.

  • Water conditions: The Red Top Ndumbi Cichlid (Pseudotropheus sp. perspicax) is a Lake Malawi mbuna and does best in hard, alkaline water that mirrors its natural rift-lake habitat. Aim for a stable pH of 7.8–8.6, general hardness of 10–20 dGH, carbonate hardness of 8–15 dKH and a temperature of 24–28°C. Stability matters more than chasing an exact number, so avoid unnecessary pH or temperature swings. Ammonia and nitrite should always read zero, and nitrate should be kept below 20 ppm through regular maintenance and strong biological filtration. Provide moderate to strong water movement and excellent oxygenation; a turnover rate of roughly 8–10 times the tank volume per hour is a useful target for a stocked mbuna aquarium. Use a reliable liquid test kit, dechlorinate all water before use, and only use Malawi buffer or mineral supplements if your source water is genuinely too soft or acidic. Soft, acidic community conditions are not suitable for this species.
  • Suitable tank mates: Because this is a semi-aggressive, territorial mbuna, tank mates must be similarly robust and able to hold their own without turning the aquarium into a battleground. Good options include similar-sized Lake Malawi cichlids such as Labidochromis caeruleus, Iodotropheus sprengerae, Pseudotropheus acei, peaceful Cynotilapia species and sturdy Synodontis catfish in a suitably large tank. Avoid small community fish, slow-moving species, long-finned fish, invertebrates and delicate peacocks that may be bullied or stressed. Very aggressive mbuna should also be avoided unless you have a large, carefully planned setup. Keep this cichlid in a group rather than as a single specimen; a species setup with one male to several females can work well, while mixed mbuna tanks should be stocked thoughtfully to spread aggression. A tank of at least 200 litres and around 120 cm in length is recommended for a group, with more space and rockwork reducing conflict. Watch new additions closely and be prepared to rehome fish if bullying becomes persistent.
  • Feeding habits: The Red Top Ndumbi Cichlid is primarily an herbivorous grazer that feeds on aufwuchs and algae in the wild, so its captive diet should be fibre-rich and spirulina-based. Offer high-quality spirulina flake or pellet food as the staple, supplemented with algae wafers, blanched zucchini, spinach, shelled peas and other vegetable matter. Occasional small amounts of brine shrimp, mysis or daphnia can be given, but meaty foods should be kept to a minimum because excessive protein can contribute to Malawi bloat and digestive problems. Feed two or three small meals per day, offering only what the fish can consume within one to two minutes, and remove uneaten food to protect water quality. Avoid beef heart, fatty foods and cheap high-protein staples. This species will graze algae from rocks and glass, so allowing some natural biofilm to develop is beneficial, but do not rely on algae alone for nutrition.
  • Tank setup and care requirements: Create a rocky mbuna-style aquascape with plenty of caves, crevices and sight breaks using secure rockwork, plus a sand substrate that allows digging and sifting. Territory and hiding spaces are essential for reducing aggression, and rearranging rocks can help disrupt established territories if bullying becomes a problem. Keep the tank well covered, as cichlids can jump, and maintain strong filtration with good surface agitation. Perform weekly water changes of around 30–50%, vacuum the substrate, rinse filter media only in tank water and monitor nitrate, pH and hardness regularly. Acclimate new fish carefully, ideally using drip acclimation, and quarantine new livestock before adding them to a established group. The Red Top Ndumbi is a maternal mouthbrooder, so breeding behaviour may include chasing, displaying and a holding female; if you intend to raise fry, a separate holding or grow-out tank is useful. Offered specimens are typically 4–7 cm and will grow, so plan for adult size and avoid overcrowding. Watch for signs of Malawi bloat, such as lethargy, swelling or loss of appetite, and respond quickly with appropriate water quality checks and dietary review.
