Product Description

A Lake Malawi cichlid whose spotted pattern and shifting moods betray its rank.

Insignis Cichlid (Protomelas spilonotus Tanzania) — a stunning Lake Malawi hap with vivid blue body colour and red finnage. Hardy, active and ideal for larger cichlid setups.

  • Water Conditions: Native to the rocky and intermediate zones of Lake Malawi, Protomelas spilonotus Tanzania thrives in hard, alkaline water that mimics its natural habitat. Aim for a pH of 7.8–8.6, a general hardness (GH) of 10–18 dGH, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 8–14 dKH. Temperature should be kept stable between 24–28°C (75–82°F). These cichlids are sensitive to poor water quality, so strong biological and mechanical filtration is essential — a large canister filter or a sump is ideal. Provide plenty of water movement and excellent surface agitation to keep dissolved oxygen high. A sand or fine gravel substrate works well, and a layout combining open swimming space with substantial rockwork, caves and crevices will help fish feel secure and allow subdominant individuals to retreat. Keep nitrates low through regular partial water changes; a mature, well-cycled aquarium is strongly recommended. Minimum tank size for a group is around 300 litres (80 US gallons), with larger being better for adult males.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: As a semi-aggressive haplochromine, this species is best kept with other Lake Malawi cichlids of similar size and temperament. Good companions include peaceful-to-moderate haps such as Copadichromis, Placidochromis, Lethrinops and Otopharynx, as well as robust Aulonocara peacocks. Milder mbuna like Labidochromis caeruleus can work in spacious, well-structured tanks, though very aggressive mbuna (for example, some Melanochromis or Pseudotropheus species) should be avoided as they may bully or outcompete this fish. Synodontis catfish, such as Synodontis multipunctatus or S. lucipinnis, make excellent bottom-dwelling tank mates and help clean up leftover food. Avoid small fish, invertebrates, and slow-moving or long-finned species that may be harassed or eaten. Keep a harem-style ratio of one male to three or four females to spread aggression, and avoid mixing multiple males unless the tank is very large and heavily decorated with visual barriers. Never house with Mbuna that are markedly more aggressive, and avoid community tanks with tiny tetras or guppies.
  • Feeding Habits: Protomelas spilonotus Tanzania is an omnivore that leans toward carnivorous feeding in the wild, grazing on plankton, insects and small invertebrates. In the aquarium, offer a varied diet based on high-quality, sinking cichlid pellets formulated for Malawi cichlids. Supplement with frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, krill, daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp to promote condition and colour. Spirulina-based flakes or pellets should form part of the diet to provide plant matter and support digestion. Feed two to three small portions daily, only as much as the fish can consume within a few minutes, and remove any uneaten food to protect water quality. Avoid fatty mammalian meats such as beef heart, which can cause digestive problems and contribute to Malawi bloat. Do not overfeed — these fish are enthusiastic eaters and obesity and bloating are real risks. A varied, portion-controlled diet, rich in fibre and quality protein, keeps colours vivid and supports long-term health.
  • Care Requirements: This is an active, intelligent cichlid that rewards good husbandry with striking colour and engaging behaviour. Acclimatise new arrivals slowly using the drip method, and quarantine where possible to prevent introducing disease. Once settled, maintain a strict weekly maintenance routine: change 30–50% of the water, vacuum the substrate, and rinse filter media in tank water to preserve beneficial bacteria. Test parameters regularly, particularly ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. Males grow larger than females (adults can reach around 18–20cm for males and somewhat smaller for females) and develop intense blue colouration with red dorsal and anal finnage as they mature; juveniles at 4–7cm are still developing their adult colours. Provide a secure lid, as these fish can jump when startled. Watch for signs of stress or aggression, such as clamped fins, hiding, or torn fins, and adjust stocking or decor if needed. Breeding is maternal mouthbrooding; if you wish to raise fry, a separate grow-out tank is advisable. Overall, this is a hardy species suitable for intermediate keepers ready to provide a spacious, well-filtered Malawi setup with stable water chemistry and a thoughtful community of tank mates.
