Product Description

A slender Lake Malawi cichlid whose dark bands and blue highlights flash in territorial disputes.

Elongatus Chewere Cichlid (Metriaclima melissa 'Chewere'): a striking, semi-aggressive Malawi mbuna with bold blue-black bars, ideal for rock-dwelling cichlid setups.

  • Water conditions: The Elongatus Chewere is a Lake Malawi mbuna and thrives in hard, alkaline water that mimics its natural rift-lake habitat. Aim for a pH of 7.8–8.6, general hardness (GH) of 8–20 dGH, and carbonate hardness (KH) of 10–15 dKH. Keep the temperature stable between 24–27°C (75–81°F) and avoid rapid fluctuations, which can stress cichlids and trigger disease. Provide excellent oxygenation and strong water movement with a turnover rate of roughly 8–10 times the tank volume per hour. A sand substrate, plenty of porous rockwork, and moderate lighting will help create a natural-looking biotope. Maintain ammonia and nitrite at zero and keep nitrate below 20–40 ppm through regular water changes. If your tap water is soft or acidic, use a reputable cichlid buffer or rift-lake salt mix to hold parameters steady. Acclimatise new arrivals slowly, preferably by drip method, and test water regularly during the first few weeks.
  • Suitable tank mates: Because this is a semi-aggressive mbuna, choose tank mates that can hold their own without being overly aggressive. Other robust Malawi mbuna such as Labidochromis caeruleus, Pseudotropheus acei, Iodotropheus sprengerae, and Cynotilapia species are good candidates in a well-structured tank. Peaceful haplochromines and Aulonocara peacocks can work in larger aquariums with plenty of rockwork, provided they are not too small or timid. Bottom-dwelling Synodontis catfish, such as Synodontis multipunctatus or S. lucipinnis, are useful scavengers and generally ignored. Avoid small community fish, long-finned species, discus, shell dwellers, and slow-moving fish that may be bullied. Do not mix closely related Metriaclima or other "elongatus" variants, as hybridization and intense territorial disputes are likely. Keep one male to three or four females, and use moderate overstocking in a large tank to spread aggression. Always quarantine new fish and observe the social dynamic closely.
  • Feeding habits: In the wild, Elongatus Chewere grazes aufwuchs and algae from rocks, so it is best treated as a herbivore with opportunist tendencies. Offer a staple spirulina-based cichlid pellet, algae wafers, and plenty of vegetable matter such as blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, or nori. These foods support healthy digestion and help prevent Malawi bloat, a serious condition linked to high-protein, low-fibre diets. Small amounts of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, or daphnia can be given occasionally as a treat, but avoid beef heart, heavy bloodworm diets, and rich protein foods. Feed two to three small meals daily, offering only what the fish can consume in one to two minutes. Remove uneaten food to protect water quality. Juveniles and growing sub-adults at 4–7 cm need consistent feeding for steady growth, but adult fish should not be overfed. Observe body condition and adjust portions accordingly.
  • Care requirements: Provide a tank of at least 120 cm / 240 litres for a small group, with a larger footprint if mixing multiple mbuna species. Build a rock-heavy aquascape with caves, crevices, and overlapping ledges to create territories and hiding places, while leaving open sand areas for swimming and grazing. Keep the lid secure, as cichlids can jump. Use strong filtration, good surface agitation, and perform weekly water changes of 30–50% to keep nitrate low and parameters stable. Watch for aggression: males may chase females and rival males, so rearrange rockwork if a single fish becomes a tyrant, and be prepared to separate problem individuals. Quarantine new livestock and inspect for white spot, velvet, and signs of bloat such as lethargy, stringy faeces, or a swollen belly. This mbuna can live for many years with consistent care. Breeding is possible in captivity, as females are mouthbrooders, but avoid crossing with other Metriaclima species to preserve distinct bloodlines.
  • Temperament and setup notes: The Elongatus Chewere is semi-aggressive, territorial, and active, making it more suitable for experienced cichlid keepers than for a peaceful community tank. Males are typically more colourful and more territorial, especially when breeding. Provide dither-like target fish only if they are robust enough, and avoid adding new fish to an established group without rearranging decor to disrupt existing territories. Keep the group ratio female-heavy, feed a fibre-rich diet, and maintain pristine water to reduce stress-related aggression. At the supplied size of 4–7 cm, these are young fish with plenty of growing to do; give them a spacious, stable, rock-filled aquarium and they will reward you with striking colour and fascinating behaviour.
