Product Description

A Central American cichlid with a blazing red head and a territorial streak.

The Redhead Cichlid (Vieja synspilum) is a striking, semi-aggressive Central American cichlid with vivid red and blue colouring — ideal for large, well-filtered tanks.

  • Water conditions: Provide a spacious aquarium of at least 450 litres (100+ gallons) for adult Redhead Cichlids, with a minimum of 200–250 litres for growing juveniles. Maintain a tropical temperature of 24–28°C (75–82°F), a pH between 7.0 and 8.0, and a general hardness of 8–20 dGH. These cichlids appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water with strong biological and mechanical filtration, plus moderate to high water movement. Use a sand or fine-gravel substrate, and decorate with driftwood, robust rocks, and caves to create territories and sight breaks. Keep the tank securely covered, as these fish can be boisterous and may jump. Perform 25–30% water changes weekly, and test regularly for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, keeping nitrate below 20–40 ppm. Stable parameters are far more important than chasing exact numbers, so avoid sudden swings in temperature or chemistry.
  • Suitable tank mates: Redhead Cichlids are semi-aggressive and territorial, especially once mature or spawning, so choose tank mates carefully. The best companions are robust, similar-sized fish that can hold their own without being overly aggressive: silver dollars, tinfoil barbs, large rainbowfish, and tough Central American cichlids such as Jack Dempseys or firemouths in sufficiently large setups. Large armoured catfish, plecos, and Synodontis species generally work well as bottom-dwelling companions. Avoid small tetras, guppies, danios, shrimp, snails, and other bite-sized invertebrates, which may be eaten or harassed. Do not combine with delicate or long-finned species, and avoid mixing multiple male Redhead Cichlids unless the tank is very large with clear territories. A single specimen, a bonded pair, or one male with several females is usually the safest approach. Always quarantine new arrivals and monitor aggression closely during the first few weeks.
  • Feeding habits: Redhead Cichlids are omnivores with a strong need for vegetable matter. Offer a staple diet of high-quality sinking cichlid pellets, supplemented with spirulina-based foods, blanched zucchini, spinach, shelled peas, and cucumber. Frozen and live foods such as krill, prawns, mysis, bloodworm, and earthworms can be given several times a week to encourage natural foraging behaviour and vibrant colour. Feed juveniles two to three small meals daily, and adults once or twice daily, offering only what they can consume in a few minutes. Avoid fatty mammalian meats, cheap filler-heavy foods, and live feeder fish, which carry disease risks. Remove uneaten food promptly to protect water quality, and adjust portions as the fish grow. A varied diet supports healthy growth, strong immune function, and the species’ impressive red-and-blue adult colouration.
  • Care requirements: Note that the Redhead Cichlid is now scientifically classified as Vieja melanura, though it remains widely known as Vieja synspilum in the hobby. These fish grow large — males can reach 30–35 cm, with females typically smaller — and they live for 10–15 years or more, so plan for a long-term commitment. They are intelligent, interactive cichlids that quickly learn to recognise their keeper, but their territorial nature means aggression can escalate as they mature. Provide plenty of caves, driftwood, and visual barriers, and rearrange decor if bullying occurs. Use powerful filtration, strong aeration, and regular maintenance to keep water pristine, as large cichlids produce a significant bioload. Acclimatise new fish carefully using the drip method, and quarantine whenever possible. Observe behaviour daily, watch for signs of fin damage, lethargy, or loss of appetite, and act quickly if problems arise. With spacious housing, stable water, a varied diet, and thoughtful tank-mate selection, the Redhead Cichlid makes a spectacular and rewarding centrepiece for the experienced freshwater aquarist.
