Product Description

Slender Lake Malawi cichlid with a territorial streak and sharp, elongated lines.

The Mpanga Cichlid is a striking semi-aggressive Malawi mbuna with bold blue-and-black banding, ideal for experienced keepers seeking active rock-dwelling cichlids.

  • Water conditions: Provide Lake Malawi-style water with a pH of 7.8–8.6, general hardness of 10–20 dGH, carbonate hardness of 8–15 dKH, and a temperature of 24–28°C (75–82°F). Ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero, and nitrate should be kept below 20–40 ppm through generous filtration and regular water changes. Mpanga Cichlids appreciate high oxygen levels, moderate water movement, and strong biological filtration; aim for a turnover rate of at least 4–6 times the tank volume per hour, with surface agitation. A tank measuring at least 120 cm (4 ft) and holding 250–300 litres is suitable for a small group, while larger volumes are better for mixed mbuna communities. Use sand or fine gravel, secure rock piles, and caves; avoid sharp-edged decor. Stability is more important than chasing exact readings, so acclimatise new fish slowly and top up with dechlorinated water. Perform 30–50% weekly water changes, rinse filter media in tank water, and keep a tight-fitting lid because these fish can jump.
  • Suitable tank mates: This is a semi-aggressive, territorial mbuna that does best in a species group or with robust, similarly sized Lake Malawi cichlids. Suitable companions include Labidochromis caeruleus, Iodotropheus sprengerae, Cynotilapia species, Pseudotropheus acei, and Synodontis catfish. Avoid small, slow, long-finned, or peaceful community fish, as well as very aggressive mbuna such as Melanochromis auratus or Demasoni in modest-sized aquariums. Keep several females per male, or use a carefully overcrowded mbuna setup with powerful filtration to spread aggression. Avoid mixing species with nearly identical colour patterns, which can increase territorial disputes. Quarantine new arrivals, provide visual barriers with rockwork, and watch for chasing, fin damage, hiding, or reduced feeding. If aggression escalates, rearrange the rockwork or remove the aggressor before serious damage occurs.
  • Feeding habits: The Mpanga Cichlid is an omnivore with strong herbivorous leanings and will graze algae from rocks. Offer a staple of high-quality spirulina-based cichlid pellets, algae wafers, and vegetable matter such as blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, and nori. Occasional small amounts of mysis, krill, or shrimp can add variety, but avoid high-protein diets and large feedings of bloodworm or beefheart because these can contribute to Malawi bloat. Feed two or three small meals daily, offering only what the group can consume in one to two minutes, and remove uneaten food. A weekly fasting day can help support digestion. Keep the diet high in fibre and consistent; sudden changes or overfeeding are more problematic than a slightly repetitive diet. Healthy grazing behaviour is a good sign, and provided rockwork will encourage natural algae picking.
  • Care requirements: Acclimatise carefully, ideally with a drip method, and quarantine new fish before adding them to a display. Provide a rocky aquascape with plenty of caves, crevices, and sight breaks, plus a sandy substrate that allows sifting. Maintain strong filtration, high oxygenation, and a regular maintenance routine. These cichlids are mouthbrooders; females may hold eggs and fry for around three weeks, and a separate grow-out tank is useful if you intend to raise fry. The offered size range is 4–7 cm, and adults typically reach around 10 cm, occasionally slightly larger. With stable water, good diet, and sensible stocking, expect a lifespan of eight to ten years or more. This species is not ideal for a peaceful community aquarium or for beginners seeking a hands-off setup; it suits keepers who can monitor aggression, perform frequent water changes, and provide a stable mbuna environment.
