Product Description

Small, aggressive, and built for alkaline water—the Hellboy Startail holds its ground.

The Hellboy Startail Betta is a striking red-and-black fighter with a dramatic tail, hardy enough for higher pH water. Shop this aggressive showpiece today.

  • Water Conditions for the Hellboy Startail Betta: This variety is best maintained in a mature, fully cycled aquarium with zero ammonia and zero nitrite, and nitrate kept below 20 ppm. Temperature should sit between 24°C and 28°C, held steady by a reliable heater and checked with a digital thermometer. The Hellboy Startail is noted for coping with higher pH water and will settle comfortably in a range of roughly 6.5 to 8.0, provided the reading is stable rather than swinging. Avoid chasing a “perfect” number with chemical buffers; consistent parameters matter far more than a specific value. General hardness of 5–15 dGH suits them well. Filtration should be gentle and low-flow, such as a sponge filter or a baffled internal filter, because heavy current stresses bettas and damages their long tails. Keep the tank covered, as bettas are capable jumpers, and leave an inch or two of humid air above the waterline for their labyrinth organ.
  • Suitable Tank Mates: The Hellboy Startail is a genuinely aggressive betta, so plan around a single male in a species-only setup or a carefully chosen community. Never house two males together, and do not mix males with females except for controlled breeding. Avoid other labyrinth fish such as gouramis, and skip known fin-nippers like tiger barbs, serpae tetras, and Buenos Aires tetras, which will shred that showy tail. Small, fast, peaceful mid-water fish can work in a generously sized, well-planted tank, but every betta has its own tolerance level. Bottom dwellers such as corydoras or small loaches are often ignored because they occupy a different zone, though shrimp and snails are frequently treated as snacks. If you want invertebrates, expect losses. Always have a spare tank or divider ready, and observe any new addition closely for the first fortnight.
  • Feeding Habits: Bettas are carnivorous insectivores with small stomachs and a strong begging reflex. Feed a staple betta pellet two or three times daily, offering only what is eaten within a couple of minutes, and supplement with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and cyclops to build colour and condition. A single fasting day each week helps prevent bloating and constipation. Soak freeze-dried foods before feeding to avoid digestive problems, and never use flake food designed for community fish as the sole diet, as it lacks the protein density bettas need. Overfeeding is the most common mistake with this species: it fouls the water and can lead to swim bladder issues. Remove any uneaten food promptly and adjust portions to keep the belly gently rounded rather than swollen.
  • Care Requirements and Tank Setup: Provide a minimum of 20 litres for a single Hellboy Startail, with larger volumes making maintenance far easier. Cycle the tank fully before introducing the fish, and acclimate by floating the bag and adding tank water gradually over 30 to 45 minutes. Carry out a 25% water change weekly with a gravel vacuum, matching temperature and dechlorinating every drop. Include live or silk plants, a smooth cave or two, and a dark background to bring out the red and black colouration; avoid sharp-edged plastic ornaments that can tear fins. Keep lighting moderate and the flow gentle. Check fins and body daily for tears, white spots, or velvet, and quarantine any new livestock. Bettas can be trained to hand-feed and will interact with their keeper, but limit mirror sessions to a few minutes to avoid stress. With stable water, quality food, and a quiet, planted tank, the Hellboy Startail makes a hardy, long-lived centrepiece.
