Ikan Laga Kampung

Ikan laga kampung is a loose, local term rather than an official variety. It generally means the short-finned, tough bettas found or bred in kampung areas, rice fields and ditches, the type many Malaysians kept as children. They look closer to the wild form: shorter fins, a stocky body, and colours that are often red, blue or green with a darker base.

Some local writers group the traditional fighting fish into Betta splendens (the Siamese fighting fish) and its close relative Betta imbellis, which is sometimes called ikan mengkaring. In practice, "kampung" fish sold today may be wild-type, local strains or crosses, so ask the seller what you're getting.

Why people love them:

  • Hardy and forgiving of small mistakes.
  • Active swimmers, because short fins don't slow them down.
  • Nostalgia. For many keepers, this is "the real ikan laga".

We don't recommend fighting bettas. Kampung-type bettas make excellent pets and display fish on their own.

Plakat (PK)

Plakat bettas have short, rounded fins, much like the traditional fighting form, but they are bred for colour and body shape. They are often recommended for beginners because short fins are less prone to tearing and fin rot.

Popular plakat colour lines include:

  • Koi plakat: marbled patches of red, white, black and orange, like a koi fish.
  • Galaxy koi: koi patterns with iridescent "star" speckles.
  • Nemo: orange, red, yellow and black, with a bright "Nemo" look.
  • Solid colours: black, white (platinum), yellow, mustard gas and more.

Halfmoon (HM)

The halfmoon is the classic show betta. When a male flares, its tail spreads into a full 180° "D" shape, like a half moon. Good halfmoons have even, wide rays and a symmetrical spread. Because their fins are long and heavy, halfmoons need calm water, smooth decor and very clean water to avoid fin damage.

Halfmoon Plakat (HMPK)

The halfmoon plakat combines plakat's short fins with a halfmoon's 180° spread. It is one of the most popular competition forms in Southeast Asia. In 2019, Sinar Harian reported that the grand champion of the Terengganu Betta Monsoon Cup, a halfmoon plakat, sold for RM7,000.

Crowntail, Double Tail and Other Fin Types

Crowntail (CT)

Crowntails have reduced webbing between fin rays, so the edges look spiky, like a crown. They are eye-catching and widely available.

Double tail (DT)

The tail fin is split into two lobes, and the dorsal fin is usually larger. There are double tail halfmoons and double tail plakats.

Dumbo / big ear

Dumbo or "elephant ear" bettas have very large, often white pectoral fins that wave like ears. They are popular display fish but need gentle water flow.

Veiltail (VT)

The long, drooping tail of the veiltail is the classic pet-shop betta. Veiltails are cheap, easy to find and a good starter fish, though serious breeders now focus on other forms.

Giant Bettas

Giant bettas are selectively bred to grow much bigger than normal bettas. Giant halfmoon plakats are the most common. They need a bit more space and more food, and a 1-kaki tank or bigger suits them. You can find giant halfmoon plakats among FishyHub listings.

Wild Bettas: Malaysia's Own Species

Malaysia is home to about 28–29 wild Betta species, which is remarkable diversity. Many are mouthbrooders, and many come from blackwater peat swamps. Examples kept by hobbyists include Betta persephone, Betta livida, Betta albimarginata and Betta channoides.

Some, like Betta persephone and Betta livida, are endangered in the wild because of habitat loss. If you want to keep wild bettas:

  • Buy captive-bred fish and never collect from the wild.
  • Expect soft, acidic, tannin-stained water. Daun ketapang helps.
  • They are usually shyer and less colourful than ornamental Betta splendens, but fascinating to watch.

Harga Ikan Laga di Malaysia: What Drives the Price?

According to Bernama, ordinary bettas sell for about RM5–10 each, while competition-grade fish can reach RM600–700 or more. Top champions go much higher: the Terengganu champion mentioned above sold for RM7,000, and Kosmo reported in 2020 that one breeder had sold a pair of avatar bettas for about RM10,000.

What pushes the price up?

  1. Grade and form. Symmetry, fin spread, ray branching and body shape matter most in show fish.
  2. Colour line. Rare or trending colours, such as galaxy koi, avatar and solid metallics, cost more.
  3. Size. Giants and large, mature males cost more than juveniles.
  4. Gender. Males usually cost more than females, though breeding-quality females from good lines aren't cheap.
  5. Breeder reputation. Fish from well-known breeders or with contest records command a premium.
  6. Exact fish vs representative photo. "Pick your own" fish with a photo of that exact fish usually cost more than a random fish from a batch.

Ikan laga paling mahal di Malaysia

There's no official record, but the most expensive bettas reported in Malaysian media are contest champions and rare colour lines. Prices in the thousands of ringgit have been reported, such as the RM7,000 Terengganu champion. Most hobby fish are far cheaper.

Buying Bettas on FishyHub

When you browse listings:

  • Check if the photo shows the exact fish or is a representative photo.
  • Check the gender, age and size stated by the seller.
  • Check the seller's location and whether they offer delivery or self-collect. Live fish to Sabah and Sarawak can take longer, so ask the seller first.
  • Ask about any live-arrival terms in the listing, rather than assuming.
