Tankmates: Not a general community fish, but one male can share a calm, well-planted tank with peaceful, non-nipping, non-long-finned species (e.g. small rasboras, Corydoras, otocinclus) and snails. Avoid other labyrinth fish, fin nippers (tiger barbs, some tetras) and fancy-finned livebearers. Bettas often hunt shrimplets and may attack adult cherry shrimp; larger Amano shrimp usually fare better.
Feeding: Insectivores/micropredators. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloat and poor water quality. Wild-caught fish may need live or frozen food before accepting pellets.

A giant halfmoon plakat is a betta bred to grow far bigger than a normal one, with short plakat fins and a halfmoon-style tail spread. In Malaysia giants are widely called ikan laga gajah. A good adult can be roughly twice the length of a standard betta, which gives it real presence in a tank.
Giants come in the same colours as regular plakats, and giant koi bettas are especially popular. FishyHub lists giant halfmoon plakats from Malaysian breeders and aquarium shops, with prices in RM, so you can compare size, colour and fin shape side by side.
Marbled patches of red, orange, white, black and sometimes blue, similar to koi fish in a pond. Marble genes mean the pattern can change as the fish matures, so the fish you buy may not look exactly the same a few months later.
Solid red, black, blue, yellow or white giants. On a big body, a clean single colour looks bold.
Mixed patterns, dragon scale and metallic types. "Fancy" is a loose trade term, so judge each fish by its photo.
| Care point | Giant halfmoon plakat |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 26–30°C. Malaysian room temperature usually works; keep the tank shaded. |
| Minimum tank | 1 kaki (30 cm, about 12–15 L) at the very least; 2 kaki (60 cm, about 55–65 L) is better for a full-grown giant |
| Temperament | Bold and territorial; one male per tank |
| Diet | Larger pellets and more protein than a normal betta, but still in measured portions |
| Beginner-friendly? | Yes, if you can give it extra space and stronger filtration |
A bigger fish eats more and produces more waste. A tiny cup or bowl fouls quickly, especially in Malaysia's warm temperatures, where ammonia builds up faster and water holds less oxygen. A filtered tank with a sponge filter or gentle hang-on filter, plus a weekly 25–30% water change, keeps a giant healthy.
Don't try to "grow" a giant bigger by overfeeding. Size comes mainly from genetics and good conditions while young. Too much food just causes bloating and dirty water. Feed a few pellets twice a day and skip a day each week.
Always add anti klorin to tap water, and keep a tight lid. Giants are strong and can jump out of open tanks.
Price in RM depends on size, colour, fin form and breeder line. Giants cost more than ordinary bettas. Buyers in Sabah and Sarawak should ask the seller before ordering live fish.
"King" is a trade name often used for larger plakat-type bettas that are smaller than true giants. Sellers use the terms differently, so check the stated size on the listing.
Koi bettas carry marble genes, which make patterns shift with age. It is normal and not a sign of illness unless the fish is also unwell.
