Tankmates: Not a general community fish, but one male can share a calm, well-planted tank with peaceful, non-nipping, non-long-finned species (e.g. small rasboras, Corydoras, otocinclus) and snails. Avoid other labyrinth fish, fin nippers (tiger barbs, some tetras) and fancy-finned livebearers. Bettas often hunt shrimplets and may attack adult cherry shrimp; larger Amano shrimp usually fare better.
Feeding: Insectivores/micropredators. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloat and poor water quality. Wild-caught fish may need live or frozen food before accepting pellets.

The crowntail is the betta with the spiky tail. Its fin membrane is reduced between the rays, so each ray sticks out like the point of a crown. In Malaysia the ikan laga crowntail has long been a favourite with hobbyists who like a dramatic, wild-looking fish at an affordable price.
FishyHub lists crowntails from Malaysian breeders and sellers, both males and females, with prices in RM. Like all Betta splendens, they cope well with our warm climate and are an easy first fish if you look after their fins.
In a single-ray crowntail each ray ends alone. Double-ray fish have rays that split into pairs, and cross-ray or "4-ray" fish have rays that split and cross over. More complex ray patterns are generally graded higher.
A show-quality crowntail opens its tail to a full, even circle when it flares, with ray extensions of similar length all the way round. Heavy webbing reduction gives a spikier look, but too much can make the fins fragile.
Crowntails come in red, blue, black, copper, multicolour, marble and more. Ask the seller whether the fish is a marble, as marbles can change colour over their lifetime.

Crowntail rays are delicate, and torn or curled rays are the most common complaint. A few simple habits help:
"Ray curl", where the tips bend inwards, can be genetic or caused by poor water. Buying from a breeder with good lines and keeping water fresh both reduce the risk.
Bettas handle Malaysian heat better than most fish, partly because they can gulp air from the surface. Still, a small jar on a sunny windowsill can overheat quickly. Keep the tank out of direct sunlight, leave an air gap under the lid and check the thermometer during heatwaves. If your room has air-conditioning on all night, a small heater helps keep things stable.
Many crowntails are affordable. Ordinary bettas typically sell for around RM5–10, while well-graded double-ray and cross-ray fish from known breeders cost much more. Before buying, check:
Bettas ship well, and many sellers send them early in the week. For Sabah and Sarawak, check with the seller first.
Not really. Care is the same as for other bettas, but their fins need cleaner water and gentler décor.
Yes, but their fins are much shorter than the males', so the crown effect is smaller.
