Saltwater fish come from reefs where food is varied and plentiful, and a marine tank needs to copy that variety. This category covers food for marine fish (ikan air masin): pellets and flakes made with marine protein, dried seaweed (nori) for herbivores, frozen mysis and brine shrimp, and specialist foods for picky eaters.
FishyHub lists marine fish food from Malaysian sellers, with prices in RM, for reef tanks and fish-only (FOWLR) setups alike.
The daily staple for most community reef fish. Choose foods made with marine ingredients such as krill, fish and seaweed, since saltwater fish need fatty acids that freshwater formulas may lack.
Tangs, rabbitfish and some angelfish graze on algae all day. A sheet of nori on a clip is one of the best ways to keep them healthy.
Mysis, enriched brine shrimp, krill and mixed marine blends are ideal for newly added fish, which often refuse dry food at first.
Foods for mandarins, seahorses and other picky feeders, plus small pellets for nano fish such as gobies.
| Fish | Diet | Good foods |
|---|---|---|
| Clownfish (ikan badut) | Omnivore | Small marine pellets, mysis |
| Tangs and rabbitfish | Mainly herbivore | Nori, algae pellets |
| Damsels, chromis | Omnivore | Flakes, small pellets |
| Wrasses, cardinalfish | Carnivore | Frozen mysis, small pellets |
| Predators (groupers, lionfish) | Carnivore | Frozen seafood, krill |
Frozen marine foods need cold delivery, so check with each seller how they pack them, or self-collect if you can. This is especially important in Sabah and Sarawak, where deliveries take longer.
Ikan badut (clownfish) makan pelet ikan laut yang kecil, flakes dan makanan beku seperti mysis atau artemia. Beri sedikit, dua kali sehari.
Ikan yang baru dipindahkan biasanya stres. Cuba beri makanan beku seperti mysis, matikan lampu sebentar dan pastikan kualiti air baik.
Not as a staple. Marine fish need marine-based nutrients, so use food made for saltwater species.
Feed the fish first so they don't steal coral food, then target-feed corals with coral food.
