Ikan Badut: Clownfish Care, Anemone Pairing and Nano Tanks in Malaysia

Ikan badut (clownfish) is the fish most Malaysians picture when they think of a marine aquarium. The good news is that captive-bred clownfish are among the hardiest saltwater fish you can keep. A pair will live happily in a well-cycled 2 kaki marine tank at a stable 25–27°C, eating marine pellets and frozen foods. They do not need an anemone to thrive. The main Malaysian challenge is heat, so plan for a fan or chiller before you buy. This guide covers tank setup, food, anemone pairing and why you should never take clownfish from our reefs.

Meet the Clownfish

Clownfish are small damselfish that live among sea anemones on Indo-Pacific reefs, including Malaysian waters around islands such as Tioman, Redang and Sipadan. The two species you'll see most often in shops are:

Species Look Adult size Temperament
Ocellaris (Amphiprion ocellaris), the "false percula" Orange with three white bands, thin black edges 8–11 cm Peaceful, best for beginners
Percula (Amphiprion percula) Brighter orange, thick black borders 8–11 cm Peaceful
Maroon (Premnas biaculeatus) Deep red, white or gold bands Female up to ~15 cm Aggressive, best kept alone as a pair
Tomato / cinnamon (A. frenatus, A. melanopus) Red-orange, one head band 10–14 cm Semi-aggressive

Captive breeding has also produced "designer" forms such as black ocellaris, Snowflake, Platinum and Picasso. Their care is identical, but prices in RM rise with pattern quality.

Why Buy Captive-Bred (and Never Wild-Collect)

  • Captive-bred clowns are hardier. They already eat prepared foods and carry fewer parasites.
  • Wild collection hurts reefs. Taking fish and anemones from reefs damages populations, and collecting is not allowed in Malaysia's marine parks. Leave Malaysian reefs for snorkellers and divers.
  • Ask the seller whether fish are tank-bred. Many listings state it clearly.

Ikan Badut Care Table

Need Recommendation
Temperature 25–27°C ideal; avoid above 28–29°C. Malaysian rooms (26–31°C) often need a fan or chiller
Minimum tank Pair: 2 kaki (60 cm, ~55 L real water). With anemone: 3 kaki (~155 L)
Salinity 1.024–1.026 SG (about 33–35 ppt), using RO water and marine salt
Temperament Peaceful with most reef fish. Keep one pair per tank (except in large tanks)
Diet Marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis and brine shrimp
Beginner? Yes. One of the best first marine fish

Tank and water

Use a properly cycled tank with live rock or bio media, a protein skimmer or good filtration, and a small powerhead for flow. Mix marine salt with RO (reverse osmosis) water, not tap water: Malaysian tap water contains chlorine and other compounds that feed algae in reef tanks. Our marine salt and RO water guide explains the process, and you can find marine salt on FishyHub.

Temperature control in Malaysia

This is the big one. A marine tank in an un-airconditioned Malaysian room can reach 30°C or more on a hot afternoon, which stresses clownfish and is dangerous for corals and anemones.

  • Fish-only nano tank: a clip-on cooling fan can drop water temperature by a couple of degrees through evaporation. Top up with RO water daily, because evaporation raises salinity.
  • Tank with an anemone or corals: a chiller is strongly recommended.
  • Keep the tank out of direct sun and away from windows.

Our chiller and fan guide covers sizing.

Ikan Badut Makan Apa? (What Clownfish Eat)

Clownfish are omnivores. Feed small amounts once or twice a day:

  • Staples: quality marine pellets or flakes.
  • Frozen foods: mysis shrimp, brine shrimp (artemia) and marine mixes, thawed first.
  • Vegetable matter: some pellets contain spirulina or seaweed. This helps colour.

Only feed what is eaten within a minute or two, as leftover food raises nitrate and phosphate. See marine fish food listings.

Ikan Badut dan Anemon Laut: Do You Need an Anemone?

No. Clownfish live perfectly well without one. In the wild the anemone protects them, but in a tank there are no predators.

If you want the classic pairing

  • Best beginner host: the bubble-tip anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). It is the most likely to be accepted by ocellaris and is the most tolerant of aquarium life.
  • Wait until the tank is mature, ideally at least 6 months old with stable parameters.
  • Provide strong lighting (a reef LED) and steady flow, plus a chiller to hold 25–27°C.
  • Cover pump intakes with sponge guards, because anemones wander and can be shredded.
  • Be patient. Some captive-bred clowns take weeks to "host", and some never do.

See anemones on FishyHub, and check each listing for whether it is aquacultured or split in captivity.

Hosting alternatives

Many clownfish will adopt soft corals or LPS corals instead, such as toadstool leather, frogspawn or hammer coral, or even a powerhead or rock cave. These can be easier to keep than anemones.

Clownfish in Nano Tanks

A 1.5–2 kaki nano reef can work well for a single pair. Tips:

  • Stability matters more than size. Small tanks swing in temperature and salinity, so use an auto top-off or top up daily.
  • Test weekly for salinity, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, and for alkalinity once you add corals. See our reef test kit guide.
  • Don't add too many fish. A pair of clowns plus a small goby or a few cleaner shrimp is plenty.

More in our nano reef tank guide and the marine beginner's guide.

Pairing and Behaviour

Clownfish are born male and the dominant fish of a pair becomes female, which is permanent. Buy two small juveniles together, or a bonded pair. Adding a third clown to an established pair usually ends in bullying. Expect the female to be larger, and both to "dance" and nip at each other occasionally while sorting the hierarchy.

Buying Clownfish on FishyHub

Check each listing for whether the fish is captive-bred, its size, whether the photo shows the actual fish, and the seller's location. Marine fish travel best over short distances, so ask about delivery or self-collect and their live-arrival terms, especially if you are in Sabah or Sarawak. Acclimatise slowly by drip or float-and-add over 30–60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ikan badut makan apa?

What size tank does a clownfish pair need? At least a 2 kaki marine tank (about 55 L of real water). A 3 kaki tank is better if you want an anemone.

Do clownfish need a chiller in Malaysia? For fish only, a fan may be enough in a cool room. For tanks with anemones or corals, a chiller is strongly recommended to stay at 25–27°C.

How long do clownfish live? Captive clownfish commonly live 10 years or more with good care.
