Reef Test Kit Guide Malaysia: Alkalinity, Calcium, Magnesium and Salinity

A reef test kit tells you what's actually in your saltwater so you can keep it stable. For a fish-only marine tank you mainly need salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. For a reef tank with corals, add alkalinity (KH), calcium and magnesium, and later phosphate. The table below gives the target ranges and how often to test. The golden rule: stability beats chasing perfect numbers. Test, record, and change dosing slowly.

Why Testing Matters More in Malaysia

  • Heat and evaporation. Warm rooms and cooling fans evaporate water quickly, and salinity rises as fresh water evaporates. Daily top-ups with RO water (never salt water) keep it steady.
  • Tap water isn't reef-safe. Malaysian tap water is chlorinated and can carry nitrate, phosphate and silicate, which feed algae. Most reefers use RO water for mixing salt, so test the RO output (with a TDS meter) as well.
  • Small tanks swing fast. Many Malaysian reefers run nano tanks in condos, and a 1.5–2 kaki tank can drift within days.

Reef Test Kit Target Ranges

Parameter Fish-only (FOWLR) Reef tank target Why it matters
Salinity 1.020–1.025 SG 1.025–1.026 SG (≈35 ppt) Corals and inverts need a stable natural level
Temperature 24–28°C 25–27°C Heat drives coral bleaching. Chiller often needed
pH 7.8–8.4 7.9–8.4 Falls with high CO2 in closed condo rooms
Ammonia / nitrite 0 0 Toxic. Test in new tanks and after deaths
Nitrate Below ~20–40 ppm ~2–10 ppm (low but not zero) Too high causes algae, zero can starve corals
Phosphate Not critical ~0.03–0.1 ppm High levels slow coral growth and fuel algae
Alkalinity (KH) Not critical 7–11 dKH (many aim for 8–9) Corals use it to build skeletons. Keep it steady
Calcium Not critical 380–450 ppm Building block for stony corals and coralline algae
Magnesium Not critical 1,250–1,400 ppm Keeps calcium and alkalinity in balance

These are commonly used hobby ranges. Your coral mix and salt brand may have their own recommendations, so follow your salt's guidance where it differs.

How Often Should You Test?

Stage Test Frequency
New tank (cycling) Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, salinity Every 2–3 days
Fish-only, established Salinity, nitrate, pH Weekly
Soft-coral reef Salinity, nitrate, phosphate, alkalinity Weekly
Mixed LPS/SPS reef Alkalinity 2–3× a week until stable, then weekly
Calcium Weekly
Magnesium Every 2 weeks
Nitrate, phosphate Weekly
After any change (new salt, dosing tweak, deaths) Relevant parameters Daily for a few days

Write every result in a notebook or app. A trend over two weeks tells you far more than any single reading.

Types of Reef Test Kits

Liquid reagent kits

Drops or powders change colour, and you compare the colour against a chart or count drops to a colour change (titration). These are affordable and widely available. Titration kits for alkalinity, calcium and magnesium are more precise than colour-chart kits.

Digital checkers and photometers

Handheld colorimeters give a numeric reading for one parameter, such as phosphate, alkalinity or nitrate. They remove the guesswork of reading colour, which is useful for low-range phosphate.

Multi-test "master" kits

Bundles that test several reef parameters are a good starter buy. Check each listing for exactly which parameters and how many tests are included.

Salinity tools

  • Refractometer: accurate and cheap. Calibrate it with a 35 ppt calibration fluid (not just RO water) for best accuracy at reef salinity.
  • Hydrometer (swing-arm): easy, but less accurate over time.
  • Digital salinity meter: convenient, but calibrate it regularly.

Testing Tips for Accurate Results

  1. Rinse vials with tank water before each test, and dry them afterwards.
  2. Use the exact sample size, as a few extra drops of water skew the result.
  3. Check expiry dates. Reagents degrade, especially in Malaysian heat. Store kits in a cool, dark cupboard, not on top of a hot tank cabinet.
  4. Test at the same time of day. pH and alkalinity shift between day and night.
  5. Cross-check strange results with a second kit or a shop test before making big corrections.

Dosing: Keep It Slow and Stable

Once corals start growing they use alkalinity, calcium and magnesium. You can replace them through:

  • Water changes with a quality marine salt. This is enough for light-demand soft-coral tanks.
  • Two-part or three-part dosing (alk, calcium, magnesium) for LPS and SPS tanks.
  • Kalkwasser or calcium reactors for heavy-demand systems.

Rules of thumb:

  • Change alkalinity by no more than about 1 dKH per day. Big swings stress or kill SPS corals.
  • Fix magnesium first if calcium and alkalinity won't hold.
  • Measure consumption: test alkalinity at the same time each day for a few days to see how much your tank uses, then dose that amount daily.

Fish-Only vs Reef: What to Buy First

Fish-only marine tank (e.g. clownfish and gobies):

  • Refractometer
  • Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH kits

Soft-coral or nano reef:

  • Everything above, plus alkalinity and phosphate

LPS / SPS reef:

  • Everything above, plus calcium, magnesium, and ideally a digital phosphate checker

Buying Test Kits on FishyHub

FishyHub lists reef and marine test kits from Malaysian sellers with prices in RM. Check each listing for which parameters are covered, the number of tests, the expiry date and whether the kit uses titration or a colour chart. Dry goods like test kits ship nationwide more easily than livestock, but ask the seller about delivery to your area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Berapa kerap perlu test air akuarium karang? Test alkalinity dan saliniti sekurang-kurangnya seminggu sekali. Kalsium juga seminggu sekali, dan magnesium dua minggu sekali. Tangki baru perlu ditest lebih kerap.

What is the ideal alkalinity for a reef tank? Most reefers aim for 7–11 dKH, often 8–9, and stability matters more than the exact number.

Do I need to test calcium and magnesium in a fish-only tank? Not usually. Salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH are the priorities for fish-only systems.

Why does my salinity keep rising? Evaporation, especially with cooling fans in Malaysian heat. Top up daily with RO fresh water, never salt water.
