Molly (Red Hamburg Bulky Ballon)

A floating ember, its bulky frame belying a peaceful nature.

Meet the Red Hamburg Bulky Ballon — a peaceful, vivid red livebearer that's easy to keep and brings colour to any planted community tank.

• Water Conditions: The Red Hamburg Bulky Ballon is a hardy but stability-loving livebearer that looks its best in well-matured, fully cycled water. Aim for a temperature of 22–28°C (72–82°F), a pH between 6.8 and 8.0, and moderately hard to hard water with a general hardness (GH) of 8–20 dGH and a KH of 4–12 dKH. It tolerates a wide range of parameters far better than it tolerates swings, so avoid sudden changes in temperature, pH or hardness. Soft, acidic water can leave these fish prone to lethargy and fungal issues, so if your tap water is soft, consider buffering with crushed coral, aragonite or a commercial mineral supplement. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate below 20ppm with weekly 20–30% water changes, using a gravel vacuum to remove waste. Because the bulky balloon body shape makes these fish slow, clumsy swimmers, use gentle filtration — a sponge filter or a canister with a spray bar turned down — and always drip-acclimatise new arrivals over 45–60 minutes before release.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Peaceful and non-predatory, this strain fits beautifully into a classic community setup. Ideal companions include small tetras such as neons and embers, harlequin and espei rasboras, cherry barbs, corydoras, kuhli loaches, otocinclus and peaceful livebearers. Small, calm gouramis and peaceful dwarf cichlids such as Apistogramma can also work in a well-planted aquarium of 90cm or more. Avoid anything that nips fins or bullies slow swimmers: tiger barbs, serpae tetras, many cichlids, angelfish, goldfish and large predatory catfish are all poor choices, and the balloon body shape makes this fish an easy target. Skip aggressive bottom dwellers, crayfish and large loaches too. If you keep mixed sexes, aim for two or three females per male to spread his attentions and prevent stress, and think twice before mixing balloon-morph livebearers with other balloon strains, as the females can struggle to deliver fry cleanly.
• Feeding Habits: An omnivore with a genuine need for plant matter, the Red Hamburg Bulky Ballon does best on a varied diet rather than a single flake. Offer a quality micro-pellet or flake with spirulina as the staple, then rotate in frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, moina and baby bloodworm two or three times a week. Because the compressed body squeezes the digestive tract, constipation and bloat are real risks — so include vegetable matter regularly. Blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach, shelled peas and seaweed sheets are all readily accepted and help keep the gut moving. Feed two to three small meals daily, offering only what is cleared within two to three minutes, and consider one fast day per week. If kept with quicker fish, target-feed near the substrate or use a pipette so the slower-moving Bulky Ballon gets its share without gorging on leftovers.
• Temperament, Care and Breeding: Peaceful, sociable and active in the upper and middle levels, this strain is happiest in a group of at least five or six. A tank of 60 litres or more suits a small group, with dense planting, floating cover and open swimming space. Always fit a tight lid — livebearers can and do jump. Keep the current gentle so the bulky body isn't buffeted, and provide a quiet corner for resting. Watch for common problems including swim bladder or buoyancy issues, dropsy, ich and fin rot, most of which trace back to poor water quality or overfeeding; medicate in a separate hospital tank where possible. Quarantine new stock for two to four weeks before adding it. Balloon-morph females can find birthing difficult due to their compressed spine, so condition them well with rich foods and good minerals. Fry are born fairly large and will take crushed flake, microworms and baby brine shrimp, but adults will predate them, so provide plenty of moss for cover if you want survivors.
• Quick Care Summary: Acclimatise slowly, keep water hard, warm and stable, feed little and often with plenty of greens, avoid boisterous tank mates, and maintain a strict weekly water-change routine. Do that and this striking red strain will reward you with years of colour, character and easy-going company in the community aquarium.
