Ikan Molly Beranak: Pregnant Molly Signs, Birth & Saving the Fry
Yes, ikan molly beranak: mollies are livebearers, so the female gives birth to free-swimming babies instead of laying eggs. A pregnant molly gets a boxy, swollen belly and a darker gravid spot near the anal fin. Shortly before birth she often hides, stays still or loses interest in food. To save the fry, give her plenty of dense plants or move her gently to a breeding box or separate tank before the birth, and then return her afterwards. Adult mollies, including the mother, will eat fry they can catch. This guide covers the signs, the setup, and how to raise the babies in a Malaysian home tank.
Is My Molly Pregnant? Signs to Look For
| Sign | What you'll see |
|---|---|
| Swollen belly | Rounder, then squarer or "boxy" behind the gills as birth approaches |
| Gravid spot | Dark patch near the anal fin that gets bigger and darker |
| Behaviour change | Hiding in plants or corners, less active |
| Appetite | Eats a lot early on; may refuse food just before birth |
| Belly shape from above | Bulges out on both sides |
| Males chasing | Males pester pregnant females constantly |
Make sure it's pregnancy, not illness. A belly with raised scales like a pinecone points to dropsy, not babies. See penyakit sisik nanas. Females also look round from simple overfeeding. Learn to sex mollies in cara bezakan jantina ikan.
Ikan Molly Beranak: How Long Is the Pregnancy?
Sources vary widely. FishBase gives about 28 days for the common molly, while hobby guides quote anything from about 4 to 8 weeks. Warm water speeds things up, and in typical Malaysian tanks at 26–30°C, a month or so is common. Other factors include species (sailfin, shortfin, balloon) and the female's health.
Female mollies can store sperm and give birth several times from a single mating, often every month or so. So a female bought alone can still surprise you.
Signs Ikan Molly Akan Beranak (Birth Is Close)
- Belly looks very large and squarish.
- Gravid spot is very dark and may look stretched.
- She hides, hovers near the bottom or surface, or stays in one spot.
- She refuses food.
- Some keepers notice faster breathing or the fish "shivering".
Births can last several hours. A large adult female can drop dozens of fry, sometimes many more.
Birthing Setup: Three Options
| Option | How | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavily planted main tank | Dense moss, floating plants and stems where fry hide | No stress from moving; natural | Some fry will be eaten |
| Breeding box (kotak pembiakan) | Hang-on or floating box with a slotted divider so fry drop through | Saves most fry; cheap | Stressful if the female is kept in it too long |
| Separate fry tank | Small tank with sponge filter, plants, heater only if the room is cold | Best survival; less stress than a box | Needs space and another setup |

Preventing stress-induced miscarriage
Stress can make a female drop premature, undeveloped fry (often with visible yolk sacs) or even absorb or abort the brood. Reduce stress:
- Move her early, a few days before the expected birth, not when labour has started.
- Use a cup, not a net, to move her, so her belly isn't squeezed.
- Match water in the new box or tank with water from the main tank.
- Don't keep her in a cramped box for weeks. A few days is the most; a separate tank is kinder.
- Separate her from males pestering her.
- Keep the water clean with a partial water change before birth, using anti klorin.
After the Birth
- Return the mother to the main tank soon after she finishes, once she looks normal again. She needs rest, good food and freedom from males.
- Count and check the fry. Healthy fry swim, hide and look for food within hours.
- Remove any dead fry or eggs to keep the water clean.
Anak Ikan Molly Makan Apa? (Feeding Fry)
Molly fry are born big enough to eat fine food straight away.
| Food | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed flake | Rub flake to a powder between your fingers | Easiest; feed tiny pinches |
| Fry powder food | Specially milled for fry | Convenient; browse fry foods |
| Baby brine shrimp (artemia) | Hatched at home | Excellent growth; see cara tetas artemia |
| Vegetable foods | Spirulina powder, algae | Mollies love grazing algae |
| Microworms | Cultured at home | Great live food |
Feed small amounts 3–5 times a day, and remove leftovers. Fry grow fast in warm water.
Cara Jaga Anak Ikan Molly
- Water quality: fry are sensitive to ammonia. Do small, frequent water changes (10–20% every few days) with dechlorinated water. Our tap water guide explains why anti klorin is essential.
- Filtration: use a sponge filter, or cover a filter intake with sponge, so fry don't get sucked in.
- Temperature: normal Malaysian room temperature is fine. Avoid overheating; keep the tank out of direct sun.
- Hardness: mollies like harder, more alkaline water than much of Malaysia's soft tap water. A pinch of mineral or aquarium salt is used by some keepers (check what your other fish tolerate). Testing GH and pH helps.
- Space: move fry to the main tank once they're too big to fit in adult mouths, usually after a few weeks.
- Plan ahead: mollies breed constantly. Have a plan for extra fish, and never release them into rivers or drains.

Lebih kurang sebulan dalam air yang suam, tetapi boleh lebih lama bergantung pada jenis molly dan keadaan ikan. Molly betina boleh beranak berulang kali daripada satu kali mengawan.
Should I put my pregnant molly in a breeding box?
Only for a short time, close to the birth. A heavily planted tank or a separate small tank is less stressful for longer stays.
