Kenapa Ikan Guppy Makan Anaknya? How to Stop Livebearers Eating Their Fry
Kenapa ikan guppy makan anaknya? Because to an adult guppy, a newborn fry is simply a small, moving, protein-rich snack. Guppies have no parental instinct at all. The mother doesn't recognise her own babies, and every adult in the tank, including the mother, the males and other fish, will eat any fry it can catch. It's not a sign of illness or bad water. The fix is to give fry somewhere to hide or somewhere apart: dense plants and moss, floating plants, a breeder box, or a separate fry tank. The same applies to mollies, platies and swordtails.
Kenapa Ikan Guppy Makan Anaknya? The Real Reasons
- No parental care: livebearers like guppies, mollies and platies drop fully formed fry and leave. In the wild, fry survive by hiding in shallow, weedy water.
- Fry look like food: anything small that wriggles triggers feeding.
- Hungry adults eat more: underfed fish hunt harder, though even well-fed guppies still snack on fry.
- Bare tanks: with nowhere to hide, few fry survive the first day.
- Stress after birth: some keepers notice the mother eats more fry right after giving birth, when she is hungry and the fry are slow.
So the answer to anak ikan guppy dimakan induknya is not to "fix" the mother but to protect the fry.
Option 1: Dense Plants and Moss (Natural Method)
The easiest method, and good enough if you're happy to save some fry rather than all. Fry dive into thick cover within seconds of birth.
| Plant | Where | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Java moss / Christmas moss | Bottom, on wood | Fry hide deep in the tangles and graze on microorganisms |
| Floating plants (salvinia, frogbit, water lettuce) | Surface | Long roots shelter newborn fry near the surface |
| Guppy grass (najas) | Floating or planted | Very dense, fast-growing |
| Hornwort | Floating or planted | Thick needle-like leaves |
| Water sprite | Floating | Fast, soft, lots of cover |

Tip: put the cover near the surface and corners, where newborn fry go first. A clump of moss floating at the top works well.
Option 2: Breeding Box (Kotak Pembiakan)
A breeder box hangs inside or on the tank. Many have a slotted or V-shaped bottom so fry fall through to a safe section where the mother can't follow.
How to use it well:
- Move the female in when she looks very close to giving birth: very round, squarish belly, dark gravid spot, hiding.
- Move her with a cup, not by squeezing her in a net.
- Remove her soon after the birth and return her to the main tank.
- Keep the fry in the box for the first 1–3 weeks, then release them when they're too large to be eaten.
Don't leave a pregnant female in a small box for days on end. The stress can cause premature birth. See ikan molly beranak for signs of stress. Browse breeding and isolation boxes, and read the breeding box guide.
Option 3: A Separate Fry Tank or Tub
For the best survival rate:
- Set up a small tank or tub with a sponge filter (fry can't be sucked in) and an air pump.
- Fill with water from the main tank, so conditions match.
- Add moss or floating plants.
- Move the pregnant female in a few days before birth, or move fry in after birth using a small cup or turkey baster.
- Return the mother after she's done.
Option 4: Separate Heavily Pregnant Females Early
If you breed guppies regularly, keep heavily pregnant females in their own planted "nursery" tank, away from males and other fish. Males pester pregnant females constantly, which adds stress. A ratio of 1 male to 2–3 females in the main tank also helps.
Comparison: Which Method Should You Use?
| Method | Fry survival | Cost | Stress to mother | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dense plants in main tank | Some | Low | Lowest | Casual keepers, natural control |
| Breeding box | High | Low | Medium (if kept short) | Saving a specific batch |
| Separate fry tank | Highest | Medium | Low | Serious breeders, strains |
| Do nothing | Very low | None | None | Tanks where you don't want more fish |
Feeding Fry So They Grow Out of Danger
The faster fry grow, the sooner they're safe in the main tank.
- Fry food powder or very finely crushed flake, 3–5 small feeds a day. See fry foods.
- Baby brine shrimp for fast growth. See cara tetas artemia.
- Microworms or infusoria for the tiniest fry.
- Clean water: small water changes every few days, always with anti klorin.
Once fry are about the size of a grain of rice or bigger and can't fit in an adult's mouth (often after a few weeks), they can usually join the main tank.
Do You Even Want to Save Them All?
Guppies breed quickly. One female can give birth about every month and can store sperm to have several broods without a male. If you don't want to be overrun:
- Let nature take its course in a sparsely planted tank.
- Keep males only; they're the colourful ones anyway.
- Rehome extras to other hobbyists or shops.
- Never release guppies into drains or rivers. Malaysia already has many alien fish established in its waterways, and several states now ban releasing foreign fish into rivers without permission.

FAQ
Kenapa ikan guppy makan anaknya sendiri?
Sebab ikan guppy tiada naluri menjaga anak.
Do mollies and platies eat their fry too?
Yes. All common livebearers do, and the same fixes (plants, breeder box, separate tank) work for them.
Will feeding adults more stop them eating fry?
It helps a little, but well-fed guppies still eat fry. Hiding places or separation are the only reliable fixes.
How many fry will survive in a planted tank?
It varies. In a heavily planted tank with lots of moss, a fair number often survive; in a bare tank, almost none.
