Baby fish have tiny mouths and fast metabolisms, so they need food that is small enough to swallow and rich enough to fuel rapid growth. That is what this category is for: makanan anak ikan in the form of fine powders, liquid fry foods, micro pellets and hatching kits for live artemia. Whether you've just found your first batch of baby guppies or you're raising a spawn of anak ikan laga, the right first foods make a big difference to how many survive.
FishyHub lists fry foods from Malaysian aquarium sellers and breeders' suppliers, with prices in RM. Many local breeders use a mix of prepared and live foods, and you'll find both here.
For the smallest fry, such as egg-layers like bettas, gouramis and tetras in their first days. Liquid foods and infusoria cultures feed fry that are too small even for powder.
Finely milled, protein-rich powders that float or drift slowly. Good for livebearer fry, which are bigger at birth, and for egg-layer fry after the first few days.
The step between powder and adult food. Graded sizes let you move up as fry grow.
Newly hatched artemia (brine shrimp) are the gold standard first live food for most fry. Eggs hatch in salt water in about a day, and Malaysia's warm room temperature helps them hatch quickly.
Microworms suit young fry, while cacing grindal suits larger juveniles. Both are easy to culture at home.
| Fry type | First days | From about week 1–2 | Growing on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guppy, molly, platy (livebearers) | Powder, baby artemia | Micro pellets, crushed flakes | Small pellets, frozen foods |
| Ikan laga, gourami | Infusoria, liquid fry food | Baby artemia, microworms | Grindal, micro pellets |
| Angelfish, rams, apistogramma | Baby artemia | Microworms, powder | Crumbles, frozen bloodworm |
| Tetras, rasboras | Infusoria, liquid food | Powder, baby artemia | Micro pellets |
Warm water is good news for fry. At 27–30°C, most species grow faster than they would in a cooler climate. The catch is that food also breaks down faster, and leftover powder can foul a small fry tank within hours. Feed small amounts three to five times a day rather than one big feed, and siphon out leftovers.
Do small, frequent water changes with water treated with anti klorin, matched to the tank's temperature. Use a sponge filter rather than a hang-on filter so fry don't get sucked in. In hot spells, gentle aeration from a pam udara helps keep oxygen up.
Fry foods are dry goods, so they ship more easily than livestock, including to Sabah and Sarawak. When comparing listings, check:
Keep opened fry food sealed and dry. Malaysia's humidity can make powders clump or go mouldy quickly.
For livebearer fry, yes, if crushed very finely. Smaller egg-layer fry need proper fry food or infusoria at first.
Some breeders use it, but it fouls water very quickly in warm tanks. Purpose-made fry food is easier to manage.
