Cacing Grindal & Microworms: Easy Live Food Cultures in Malaysia
Cacing grindal (grindal worms) and microworms are the two easiest live foods you can culture in a small box on a shelf. Microworms grow on damp oat porridge with a pinch of yeast and are tiny enough for betta and other fry from about the first week. Grindal worms live in damp coco peat or a sponge, eat oats or fish flakes, and are a bigger, protein-rich food for adult bettas, guppies, gouramis and juveniles. In a Malaysian home the main challenge is heat: microworms tolerate warm rooms well, but grindal cultures prefer the cooler end of room temperature, so keep them in the coolest, shaded spot you have.
Grindal Worms vs Microworms at a Glance
| Microworms | Cacing grindal | |
|---|---|---|
| What they are | Tiny nematodes (roundworms) | Small white segmented worms (related to earthworms) |
| Size | Very small, under a few millimetres | About 1 cm or so |
| Best for | Fry (betta, gourami, killifish), nano fish | Adult bettas, guppies, gouramis, juveniles, corydoras |
| Culture medium | Oat porridge + yeast | Damp coco peat, potting mix or a sponge |
| Food | The medium itself (yeast and oats) | Dry oats, fish flakes, baby cereal |
| Heat in Malaysian rooms | Copes well | Prefers cooler spots; may crash in very hot rooms |
| Harvest | Scrape from the box walls | Lift a lid or glass plate from the surface |
| Restart medium | Every 2–3 weeks | Top up; refresh medium every few months |
How to Culture Microworms
What you need
- A small plastic food container with a lid (punch a few tiny air holes)
- Instant or rolled oats
- A pinch of baker's yeast (yis)
- A starter culture
- Dechlorinated water
Steps
- Cook a thin oat porridge (or soak instant oats in hot water), let it cool, and spread about 1 cm deep in the container.
- Sprinkle a small pinch of yeast on top.
- Add the starter, a spoonful of an old culture.
- Cover with the lid (with tiny holes) and keep out of direct sun.
- Wait 3–5 days. You'll see the surface "shimmer" and worms climbing the walls.
- Harvest by wiping the walls with a clean finger, cotton bud or small brush, then swish it in the fry tank.
Microworms survive in fresh water for a while and wriggle near the bottom, so fry hunt them easily. Feed small amounts; uneaten worms eventually die.
When to restart
Microworm cultures sour and smell bad after a couple of weeks. Start a fresh box every 1–2 weeks from the old one, and always keep two going. Humid Malaysian air can encourage mould on the surface, so a culture that turns fuzzy should be restarted.
How to Culture Cacing Grindal
What you need
- A shallow plastic box, 15–30 cm long, with a lid and a few small holes
- Coco peat (sabut kelapa) or sterile potting mix, or a block of aquarium sponge
- Dry oats, baby cereal or crushed fish flakes
- A small piece of glass, acrylic or plastic to lay on the surface
- A starter culture
Steps
- Moisten the coco peat with dechlorinated water so it's damp, like a wrung-out sponge, not soggy.
- Fill the box 3–5 cm deep.
- Add the starter and spread it out.
- Sprinkle a little food (a thin line of oats or flakes) on the surface.
- Lay the glass plate on top of the food.
- Keep in the coolest, darkest spot you have. A cupboard in an air-conditioned room is ideal in Malaysia. Avoid kitchen tops near the stove or rooms that heat up in the afternoon.
- Harvest after a week or two: lift the glass and you'll find a mat of worms on its underside. Rinse them off into a cup of tank water.
Feeding and care
- Feed only what they finish in a day or two. Leftover food goes mouldy in our humidity and attracts mites and fruit flies.
- Keep the medium damp. If it dries out the worms die; if it's waterlogged it turns sour.
- If a culture smells sour, replace part of the medium.
Grindal worms in Malaysian heat
Grindal worms are kept successfully at typical room temperatures, but hobbyists generally find they slow down or crash when it's very warm. In Malaysia, the safe approach is:
- Keep cultures indoors, shaded and away from windows
- Use an air-conditioned room or a cool cupboard during hot months and heatwaves
- Keep two or three boxes as backup
How to Feed Them
| Fish | Food | How much |
|---|---|---|
| Betta fry (week 1–3) | Microworms | Small amounts 2–4 times a day |
| Guppy fry | Microworms, then small grindal | A few times a day |
| Adult betta | Grindal worms | A few worms, 2–3 times a week as a treat |
| Gourami, corydoras | Grindal worms | A small pinch, a few times a week |
Grindal worms are rich in fat, so treat them as a supplement, not the only food. Combine with good pellets and other live food like moina (kutu air) and baby brine shrimp.
Why Culture at Home Instead of Buying Frozen?
- Always fresh and alive, which triggers feeding in fussy fish and fry
- No parasites of the kind sometimes found in wild-caught live food
- Cheap: one starter can last years
- Ideal for breeding: see our guides on cara membiak ikan laga and makanan anak ikan
Buying Starter Cultures on FishyHub
Starter cultures are listed under live feed, and fry foods under fry foods. Live cultures travel reasonably well in small tubs, but check the seller's location, how the culture is packed, and what happens if it arrives dead. Prices are set by each seller in RM.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cacing grindal makan apa?
Cacing grindal makan oat kering, bijirin bayi atau serbuk makanan ikan yang ditabur nipis di atas sabut kelapa yang lembap. Bagi sedikit sahaja, cukup untuk habis dalam sehari dua, supaya tidak berkulat.
Kenapa kultur cacing grindal saya mati?
Biasanya sebab terlalu panas, medium terlalu kering atau terlalu basah, atau makanan berlebihan sehingga berkulat. Simpan kotak di tempat paling sejuk dan gelap dalam rumah, contohnya bilik berhawa dingin.
Are microworms good for betta fry?
Yes. Microworms are one of the most popular first foods for betta fry once they're free-swimming, often alongside infusoria and baby brine shrimp.
How long does a microworm culture last?
Usually one to two weeks at peak before it sours. Start a new box from the old one regularly.
Can I feed grindal worms every day?
You can feed small amounts, but they're fatty. For adults, a few times a week alongside a staple pellet is better.
