Infusoria & Makanan Anak Ikan: First Foods for Tiny Fry in Malaysia
The right makanan anak ikan (fry food) depends on how big the fry are when they hatch. Tiny egg-layer fry such as betta, gourami and many tetras need microscopic food first: infusoria, green water or a fine liquid/powder fry food for the first few days. Larger fry such as guppy, molly and platy babies can eat crushed flakes, powdered fry food and baby brine shrimp from day one. Start an infusoria culture as soon as you see eggs, feed tiny amounts several times a day, and keep the water clean, because most fry losses come from starvation in the first days or from fouled water, not disease.
This guide covers what to feed from hatch to week 3, how to make infusoria at home in Malaysian conditions, and the mistakes that wipe out a batch.
Which Fry Need What? Makanan Anak Ikan Baru Lahir
| Fry type | Examples | First food (days 1–4) | Next foods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Very small egg-layer fry | Betta, gourami, many tetras and rasboras | Infusoria, green water, liquid fry food | Microworms, baby brine shrimp |
| Medium egg-layer fry | Angelfish, goldfish, corydoras | Baby brine shrimp, fine powder food | Crushed flakes, micro pellets |
| Livebearer fry | Guppy, molly, platy, swordtail | Powdered fry food, crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp | Small flakes, micro pellets |
Yolk sac stage: Most egg-layer fry live off their yolk for the first couple of days after hatching. Bettas, for example, hang tail-down in the bubble nest before swimming freely. Start feeding when they swim horizontally on their own.
What Is Infusoria?
"Infusoria" is a hobby term for a mix of microscopic organisms, mostly protozoa such as paramecium, that bloom when plant matter decays in water. They're small enough for the tiniest fry to swallow, they swim slowly in the water column, and they don't foul the tank the way powdered food can.
How to culture infusoria at home
- Fill a jar or bottle (1–2 L) with aged or dechlorinated water. Malaysian tap water contains chlorine, so treat it with anti klorin first. Old aquarium water works even better because it already contains microorganisms.
- Add a food source. Common choices are a few pieces of blanched lettuce or cabbage, a small piece of banana peel, or a crushed dried daun ketapang (catappa leaf).
- Leave it uncovered or loosely covered (with netting to keep mosquitoes out) in bright indirect light, not direct sun.
- Wait. In warm Malaysian rooms, the water usually turns cloudy and smelly first, then clears slightly as infusoria take over. Many cultures are usable in about 3–5 days, though some take a week or more.
- Check it. Hold the jar against a light: you should see tiny moving specks. A cheap magnifying glass helps.
- Feed with a dropper or syringe, a few millilitres several times a day, taken from the clearer upper water.
Tip: Start a second culture two or three days after the first so you always have one at its peak. Fry can starve within a day or two without food.
Green Water
Green water is water full of free-floating algae. Keep a tub or jar of treated water in the sun with a few drops of plant fertiliser, and within days it turns green. A little poured into the fry tank feeds the fry directly and also feeds the infusoria living there. It's an easy, low-tech option for outdoor tubs, which is how many Malaysian betta breeders raise fry.
Powdered and Liquid Fry Foods
Commercial fry foods are convenient and consistent. They're finely ground, high-protein foods, sometimes in liquid form for the smallest fry. The downside: anything uneaten sinks and rots quickly in warm water. Use a tiny pinch, feed little and often, and siphon the bottom daily.
Why Egg Yolk Is Risky
Hard-boiled egg yolk squeezed through cloth is an old trick, and it can work, but it pollutes water very quickly, especially at 28–31°C. A small overdose causes a bacterial bloom and ammonia spike that can kill a whole batch overnight. If you use it, use the tiniest smear, in a tank with a mature sponge filter, and do daily water changes. Most breeders now prefer infusoria and proper fry food.
Feeding Schedule: Hatch to Week 3
This is a general guide for small egg-layer fry such as bettas. Livebearer fry can skip straight to the week 1–2 foods.
| Age (after free-swimming) | Food | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Infusoria, green water, liquid fry food | 3–5 small feeds a day |
| Days 3–7 | Add microworms and newly hatched baby brine shrimp | 3–4 feeds a day |
| Week 2 | Baby brine shrimp, microworms, baby moina, fine powder | 3 feeds a day |
| Week 3 | Baby brine shrimp, moina, crushed flakes, micro pellets | 2–3 feeds a day |
Watch the bellies: well-fed fry have rounded, often orange or pink bellies after eating artemia. Our step-by-step guides cover hatching artemia, culturing microworms and grindal worms and raising anak ikan laga.
Keeping Fry Water Clean
- Small, frequent water changes (10–20% daily or every other day) with treated water at the same temperature.
- Gentle filtration only. A sponge filter on a pam udara is ideal: it won't suck fry in, and it grows the bacteria that process waste.
- Siphon leftovers with airline tubing so you don't remove fry.
- Snails like ramshorn snails help clean up uneaten food in fry tanks.
- Shade the tank from direct sun to avoid overheating.
Common Mistakes
- No food ready when fry become free-swimming
- Overfeeding powder or egg yolk and fouling the water
- Feeding food that's too big, so fry starve with food all around them
- Strong filters that suck in fry
- Big water changes with untreated or different-temperature water

Frequently Asked Questions
Anak ikan baru lahir makan apa?
Bagaimana nak buat infusoria sendiri?
When do I stop feeding infusoria?
Once fry can take baby brine shrimp or microworms, usually around a week after free-swimming for betta fry. You can keep offering a little infusoria for smaller, slower-growing fry in the batch.
Can I feed fry crushed flakes instead?
For livebearer fry, yes: grind flakes into a fine powder. For very small egg-layer fry, flakes are usually too big in the first days.
How many times a day should I feed fry?
Little and often: three to five small feeds a day for very young fry, with leftovers removed.
