Anak Ikan Laga: Raising Betta Fry from Hatch to Jar in Malaysia
Raising anak ikan laga (betta fry) comes down to three things: tiny food early, clean water, and space as they grow. For the first few days after they swim freely, feed infusoria, green water or liquid fry food several times a day. Move to microworms and newly hatched baby brine shrimp (artemia) from about the end of the first week, then add moina, grindal worms and crushed pellets. Do small daily water changes, give them more room from around week 3–4, and jar the males once they start sparring, often somewhere around 6–10 weeks. In warm Malaysian water fry grow quickly, but they also foul their water quickly, so cleanliness matters as much as food.
Anak Ikan Laga Baru Menetas: The First Days
After hatching (usually 1–2 days after spawning), betta fry hang tail-down from the bubble nest while they live on their yolk sac. The father keeps catching and spitting back any that fall. After a further 2–3 days they start swimming horizontally. That's the moment to:
- Remove the father so he doesn't eat them.
- Start feeding the first foods below.
- Keep the water calm: no strong filter, just a very gentle sponge filter or none.
For the spawning steps, see our guide to cara membiak ikan laga.
Anak Ikan Laga Makan Apa? Week-by-Week Feeding
| Age (from free-swimming) | Main foods | Feeds per day | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Infusoria, green water, liquid fry food | 3–5 | Tiny amounts, watch for leftovers |
| Days 4–7 | Infusoria + microworms; start trialling baby brine shrimp | 3–5 | Bellies should look full |
| Week 2 | Baby brine shrimp, microworms | 3–4 | Pink/orange bellies after artemia |
| Week 3–4 | Baby brine shrimp, baby moina, fine powder food | 3 | Start offering crushed pellets |
| Week 5–8 | Moina, grindal worms, frozen bloodworm (chopped), small pellets | 2–3 | Growth speeds up |
| Week 8+ | Adult foods in small sizes | 2 | Jarring stage for males |
Our guide to infusoria and makanan anak ikan explains first foods, and it links on to hatching artemia and culturing microworms.
Mixed sizes are normal. Some fry grow much faster than others. Larger fry may eat smaller siblings, so if size differences become big, sort them into separate tubs.
Water Changes Without Losing Fry
Fry are delicate and the water is shallow and warm, so waste builds up fast.
- Weeks 1–2: change about 10% daily, siphoning debris from the bottom with airline tubing. Add water slowly, matched in temperature and treated with anti klorin.
- Weeks 3–6: 20–30% every day or two.
- After week 6: larger regular changes, as for adults.
Siphon into a white bowl so you can spot and return any fry you suck up. Many Malaysian breeders keep a few daun ketapang (catappa leaves) in fry tubs; they tint the water and are traditionally believed to help fry. Our pillar on betta care covers water basics.
The labyrinth organ stage
Around 3–6 weeks, fry develop the labyrinth organ that lets them breathe air at the surface. During this stage, a big temperature difference between the water and the air above it can harm them. Keep a lid or cling-wrap cover (with a small gap) over tanks and tubs, and avoid placing them directly in aircond draughts.
Berapa Lama Anak Ikan Laga Membesar?
Growth depends heavily on food, space and water quality. As a rough guide:
| Age | Typical stage |
|---|---|
| 1 week | Tiny, barely visible |
| 3–4 weeks | Recognisable fish shape, colour just starting |
| 6–8 weeks | Fins and colour developing; males start to show longer fins and sparring |
| 3–4 months | Juvenile, often sold or jarred as young fish |
| 4–6 months | Close to adult size and full colour |
A Malaysian breeder interviewed by Sinar Harian moved fish into glass jars once they were around four months old and mature. Many hobbyists jar males earlier, as soon as they start fighting.
When and How to Jar the Males
Signs it's time:
- Males flaring, chasing and nipping each other
- Fin damage appearing in the group
- Clear differences in fin length and colour between males and females
How to do it:
- Prepare jars, cups or a divided tank with treated water at the same temperature.
- Move the most aggressive males first.
- Put an opaque card or paper between jars at first if they flare constantly, then remove it for short periods (flaring in moderation is healthy exercise).
- Females can usually stay together in a group if there's enough space and cover, but watch for bullying.
Our guide to telling male and female ikan laga apart explains the differences in detail.
Space: Avoiding Stunted Fry
Crowded fry grow slowly and unevenly. As they grow:
- Spread the batch across more tubs or a larger tank by week 3–4
- Cull or rehome deformed fry humanely if needed (ask an experienced breeder for guidance)
- Keep tubs shaded and covered, especially in rain and hot afternoons
A breeding box can also be used to separate a few weaker or smaller fry inside a larger tank.
Common Problems with Betta Fry
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Fry disappear in the first week | Starvation, eaten by father | Food ready before free-swimming; remove father on time |
| Mass deaths overnight | Fouled water from overfeeding | Smaller feeds, daily siphoning |
| Fry stop growing | Crowding, poor water, not enough food | Split the batch, more changes, more live food |
| Gasping and dying around week 3–6 | Cold air above warm water at the labyrinth stage | Cover the tub or tank |
| Fin nipping | Overcrowding, males maturing | Spread out, start jarring |
Frequently Asked Questions
Anak ikan laga makan apa?
Do betta fry need a filter?
Not in the first weeks. If you use one, choose a gentle sponge filter on a low-output air pump. Small daily water changes keep the water clean.
Why are my betta fry different sizes?
It's normal. Some fry eat more and grow faster. Sort large and small fry into separate containers so the big ones don't bully or eat the small ones.
Can I raise betta fry on dry food only?
It's difficult in the first weeks. Live first foods give much better survival. Dry fry food is a useful backup alongside them.
