Kotak Pembiakan: How to Use a Breeding Box Without Stressing Your Fish

A breeding box (kotak pembiakan ikan) is a small plastic or mesh enclosure that sits inside or hangs on your aquarium. It's used to separate a pregnant livebearer before birth, protect newborn fry, or isolate a sick or bullied fish while it stays in the same water. Used well, it saves fry from being eaten. Used badly, it stresses the mother and can cause early birth or death. The key rules: move the female only when she's close to giving birth, keep her in for no more than a day or two after birth, and remove her as soon as she's done. A hang-on breeder with water flow is gentler than a small floating box.

Types of Breeding Box

Type How it works Pros Cons
Floating plastic box Floats or clips inside the tank; slotted floor lets fry drop through Cheap, simple Small, still water; stressful for big fish
Mesh / net breeder Fine net on a frame inside the tank Good water flow, softer Fry can get caught in torn nets; snails get in
Hang-on breeder Hangs outside the tank; an air pump or water pump feeds tank water in More room, constant fresh water, frees tank space Needs an air line; slightly more cost
Divider Splits the tank into sections Useful for bettas and aggressive fish Not for fry protection

Most Malaysian guppy keepers start with a floating box or net. Breeders who raise fry regularly often move to hang-on breeders or a separate fry tank. Browse options under Breeding & Isolation Box.

Using a Breeding Box for Livebearer Births

Guppies, mollies and platies give birth to live fry, and adults (including the mother) will eat them. Read more in why guppies eat their fry.

When to move the female

Look for these late-pregnancy signs:

  • A large, boxy belly, squared off behind the gills
  • A dark gravid spot near the vent, sometimes with visible fry eyes
  • Hiding, staying near the heater or corners, or hanging near the surface
  • Restless swimming up and down the glass
  • Refusing food

Move her when she shows several of these. Moving too early is a common mistake. A female stuck in a tiny box for a week often gets stressed and may abort or die.

Step by step

  1. Set up the box in a calm part of the tank, away from strong filter flow.
  2. Add cover: a bit of java moss or floating plant gives fry somewhere to hide.
  3. Move the female gently using a cup, not a net, to avoid damaging her.
  4. Leave the light dim and keep the tank quiet.
  5. After birth, remove the mother as soon as she's finished (often within a few hours). Release her into the main tank or a rest tank.
  6. Feed the fry with fine food: crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp (artemia) or fry powder.

If she hasn't given birth within 24–48 hours, release her back and try again later. More on mollies in our pregnant molly guide, and on guppies in our guppy care guide.

Breeding Box Guppy: Raising Fry Inside the Box

Fry can stay in the box for 1–3 weeks, until they're big enough not to fit in adult fish mouths. While they're there:

  • Feed small amounts 3–5 times a day.
  • Remove uneaten food daily. A box has limited flow, and leftovers foul the water fast.
  • Don't overcrowd. A small floating box suits about 10–20 fry for a short time.
  • Move them to a grow-out tank or release them when they're about 1–1.5 cm.

You'll find guppies from Malaysian breeders, many from Johor's guppy farms, under Guppies.

Using a Breeding Box for Isolation

Sick fish

A box lets you watch a sick fish closely and feed it separately. But remember:

  • It shares water with the main tank, so you can't medicate just the box.
  • For contagious diseases like white spot, the whole tank usually needs treating anyway.
  • For proper treatment, a separate quarantine or hospital tank is better. See our quarantine tank guide.

Aggressive or bullied fish

  • Time-out: a box can give a bullied fish a break, or calm a bully for a few days.
  • Reintroducing: rearrange the decor when you release the bully, so territories reset.
  • If aggression returns, the fish need rehoming or a bigger tank.

Betta breeding and conditioning

Betta breeders sometimes place a female in a clear box or divider inside the male's tank, so they can see each other before spawning. Our betta breeding guide explains the process.

Time Limits: How Long Is Too Long?

Use Recommended maximum
Pregnant female before birth 24–48 hours
Female after giving birth Remove within hours
Fry grow-out 1–3 weeks, depending on size and number
Sick fish observation A few days, then move to a hospital tank
Aggressive fish time-out 2–5 days
Betta female viewing (before spawning) A few days

Common Mistakes

  1. Moving the female too early, which stresses her
  2. A box right under the filter outlet, which makes it too turbulent
  3. A box in direct light or near a window, where small floating boxes overheat quickly in Malaysian heat
  4. No cover for fry or the mother
  5. Netting the female roughly, which can trigger premature birth
  6. Forgetting to clean the box, so dirty water builds up
  7. Too many fry for too long, causing stunted growth

Kotak Pembiakan vs Separate Fry Tank

Breeding box Separate fry tank
Cost Low Higher (tank, filter)
Space Uses main tank Needs extra space
Water quality Shares main tank water Fully controlled
Growth Limited by space Faster, better
Best for Occasional births Regular breeding

A simple fry tank with a span filter is the next step up for serious breeders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my guppy die in the breeding box?

Usually stress from being moved too early or kept too long in a small, still space. Use a bigger or hang-on breeder, and move her only when birth is close.

Can I use a breeding box for a sick fish?

For observation and separate feeding, yes. For medicine, use a separate hospital tank, because the box shares water with the main tank.

Is a hang-on breeder better than a floating box?

Generally yes. It has more room and constant fresh water from the main tank, so it's less stressful for the fish.
