Cara Jaga Ikan Molly: Molly Fish Care, Balloon Molly & Soft Water
Cara jaga ikan molly is simple once you know the Malaysian catch: mollies like harder, mineral-rich water, and much of our tap water is soft with low KH. Treat tap water with anti klorin, raise hardness with a mineral supplement or a little crushed coral, keep them in a filtered tank of at least 2 kaki, feed plenty of vegetable matter, and keep more females than males. Get the water right and most of the classic molly problems, especially "shimmying", go away.
Mollies (Poecilia species and their hybrids) are livebearers, like guppies and platies, and they're widely bred in Malaysia, so healthy fish are easy to find.
Cara Jaga Ikan Molly: Care Sheet
| Need | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24–30°C; Malaysian room temperature is fine |
| Tank size | 2 kaki (~55 L) for a small group; 3 kaki for sailfins |
| Water | Treated tap water with added minerals; aim for moderate to hard, pH about 7.5–8.0 |
| Filtration | Filter plus air pump; mollies are big eaters and produce plenty of waste |
| Diet | Omnivore with a strong herbivore side: spirulina/vegetable flakes, algae, some protein |
| Group | 1 male to 2–3 females |
| Temperament | Peaceful; males chase females constantly |
| Beginner-friendly? | Yes, once water hardness is sorted |
Why Soft Water Matters for Ikan Molly
In the wild, mollies live in coastal rivers, estuaries and brackish lagoons with plenty of dissolved minerals. Soft water with low KH (carbonate hardness) has two effects:
- Mineral stress. Mollies seem to struggle to regulate their body salts in very soft water, which shows up as lethargy, clamped fins and shimmying.
- Unstable pH. Low KH means little buffering, so pH drops as waste builds up between water changes.
Our tap water guide explains chlorine and hardness in Malaysian supply water. The fix is not complicated:
- Mineral supplement: a GH/KH booster or livebearer mineral product from the water condition additives range. Dose with each water change.
- Crushed coral or aragonite in a filter bag or mixed into the substrate slowly raises KH and pH.
- Aquarium salt (garam ikan): many Malaysian keepers add a small amount for mollies. It doesn't add KH, but mollies tolerate it well. Don't use it if you keep salt-sensitive tank mates such as corydoras, and never use iodised table salt.
Test before and after with a water test kit so you know your starting KH and don't overshoot.
The Molly "Shimmy"
A molly that sways side to side in one spot without moving forward is shimmying. It isn't a disease in itself; it's a stress sign. Common causes:
| Cause | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Soft, mineral-poor water | KH and GH test | Add minerals, crushed coral or a little salt |
| Poor water quality | Ammonia, nitrite | Partial water change, check filter |
| Sudden temperature drop | Aircond blowing on tank | Move tank, stabilise temperature |
| Overcrowding / harassment | Too many males | Adjust male-to-female ratio |
If shimmying comes with white spots, fuzzy patches or rapid weight loss, treat the specific disease as well.
Molly Varieties in Malaysia
Ikan molly balon (balloon molly)
The balloon molly has a short, rounded body and a curved spine. It's popular in Malaysian shops, especially in white, orange and black. That shape is a bred deformity, so balloon mollies:
- Are more prone to swim bladder and buoyancy problems
- Often have shorter lifespans than normal-bodied mollies
- Can have difficulty giving birth
They're still fine for beginners if you feed lightly and keep the water excellent. Avoid fish that are already struggling to swim straight.
Sailfin molly
Sailfins (from Poecilia velifera and P. latipinna lines) have a tall, flag-like dorsal fin on the males. They grow larger, often 10–12 cm, so give them a 3-kaki tank.
Black, dalmatian, gold and lyretail mollies
Common short-fin and lyretail forms come in black, gold, white, dalmatian (spotted) and mixes. They are the hardiest choice for a first molly tank.

Tank Setup and Tank Mates
A 2-kaki tank suits about four to six standard mollies; a 3-kaki tank gives sailfins room and dilutes male chasing. Planted tanks help pregnant females hide. Good tank mates are other peaceful mid-sized fish that like harder water, such as platies, swordtails and guppies. Our guppy care guide covers the close cousin.
Avoid fin-nippers (tiger barbs) and soft-water specialists that won't enjoy mineral-boosted water.
Ikan molly perlu oksigen?
All fish need dissolved oxygen, and mollies are active and heavy-bodied, so they suffer quickly in warm, overstocked tanks. An air pump with an airstone is a good idea in Malaysian heat, especially for balloon mollies.
Feeding
Mollies graze algae all day. Give them:
- A spirulina or vegetable-based flake as the staple
- Some protein a few times a week (small pellets, frozen artemia)
- Blanched spinach or zucchini occasionally
Feed small amounts twice a day. Their appetite tempts beginners to overfeed, which fouls soft-water tanks fast.
Breeding Basics
Mollies give birth to live fry, typically roughly every four weeks once a female is mature. A pregnant female's belly squares off and a dark gravid spot appears near the vent. Adults will eat fry, so use dense plants or a breeding box for the last days. Feed fry crushed flake or fry food several times a day.
Don't move a heavily pregnant female into a tiny breeder box for days; the stress can cause premature birth. Short spells only.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan molly perlu garam ke?
Tidak wajib, tetapi ikan molly suka air yang lebih keras dan bermineral. Di Malaysia air paip biasanya lembut, jadi ramai yang tambah sedikit garam ikan atau penambah mineral. Jangan guna garam dapur beriodin.
Kenapa ikan molly saya bergoyang di tempat?
Itu dipanggil "shimmy", tanda ikan tertekan. Selalunya disebabkan air terlalu lembut, kualiti air teruk atau suhu jatuh tiba-tiba. Uji air, tukar air separuh dan tambah mineral.
Can mollies live in a bowl without a filter?
Not well. Mollies produce a lot of waste and need stable water; a filtered tank of 2 kaki or more is the realistic minimum.
How long do balloon mollies live?
Usually less than normal mollies because of their compressed spine, often a couple of years. Good water and light feeding help them last longer.
Can mollies live in full seawater?
Some molly species can adapt to brackish and even marine conditions with slow acclimatisation, but shop-bought mollies should be kept in fresh water with added minerals unless you know their background.
