Ikan Molly vs Platy: Molly vs Platy Differences, Care & Which to Choose

The short answer to molly vs platy: both are easy, colourful livebearers (ikan beranak), but platies are smaller (about 5–6 cm), stockier and happier in a 2 kaki community tank, while mollies grow bigger (about 8–12 cm), need more space and are fussier about water minerals. In Malaysia, where tap water is often soft with low KH, mollies are the ones that suffer if you don't add minerals. If you're a beginner with a smaller tank, start with platies. If you have a 3 kaki tank and are willing to test and adjust your water, mollies are a great upgrade.

Molly vs Platy at a Glance

Feature Platy (ikan platy) Molly (ikan molly)
Scientific genus Xiphophorus Poecilia
Adult size ~5–6 cm ~8–12 cm (sailfin bigger)
Body shape Short, deep, stocky, small fins Longer body; wider tail; sailfin types have a tall dorsal fin
Minimum tank 2 kaki (~55 L) 2.5–3 kaki (~80–155 L)
Water Moderately hard, pH 7–8 Harder, pH 7.5–8.5; tolerates some salt
Temperature ~22–28°C ~24–28°C
Temperament Very peaceful Peaceful; males can chase females
Diet Omnivore, likes algae Omnivore, heavy algae/plant grazer
Lifespan ~2–4 years ~3–5 years
Beginner-friendly? Yes, very Yes, if water is right

How to Tell Them Apart

  • Mouth: mollies have a flatter, upturned mouth for grazing; platies have a small, rounder mouth.
  • Body: platies look compact, like a little teardrop. Mollies are longer, and sailfin and balloon mollies have very distinctive shapes.
  • Tail: many mollies have a broad, rounded or lyre tail. Platies have a simple, short fan tail.
  • Size: an adult molly is usually clearly bigger than an adult platy.

Juveniles and some colour forms look very similar, which brings us to hybrids.

Hybrid Confusion

You'll sometimes see "molly-platy" hybrids advertised or hear that the two cross easily. In reality, mollies (Poecilia) and platies (Xiphophorus) belong to different genera and do not normally interbreed. What does happen:

  • Platies and swordtails (both Xiphophorus) cross easily, and many shop platies carry swordtail genes
  • Mollies cross with other Poecilia, and many commercial mollies are mixed strains
  • Black mollies and black platies, or dalmatian mollies and spotted platies, get mislabelled

If a listing is unclear, ask the seller which species it is.

Water: The Big Difference in Malaysia

Malaysian tap water is chlorinated and, in much of the country, soft with low KH. Livebearers in general prefer harder, more alkaline water, and mollies are the most sensitive to soft water. In soft, acidic water mollies often get "the shimmies" (swaying in place), clamped fins and fungus.

To keep mollies healthy:

  • Test pH, GH and KH. Our KH/GH guide explains what the numbers mean
  • Add crushed coral or aragonite to the filter or substrate to buffer pH
  • Some keepers add a small dose of aquarium salt (garam ikan), but this isn't needed if minerals are right, and it isn't suitable for every tankmate
  • Do regular partial water changes with anti klorin

Platies are more forgiving and usually do fine in moderately soft water, though they still prefer pH above 7.

Temperament and Tankmates

Both are peaceful community fish. Male mollies can be pushy, chasing females constantly, so keep 2–3 females per male of either species.

Good tankmates for both: tetras, rasboras, corydoras, gouramis, other livebearers and peaceful barbs. Avoid fin-nippers and large predatory fish.

Because mollies like slightly harder water and platies tolerate a range, you can keep both together in a well-buffered tank.

Breeding: Both Are Prolific

Both mollies and platies give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Females can store sperm and give birth every 4–6 weeks.

  • Platies: broods of about 20–50 fry
  • Mollies: broods can be larger, sometimes 50+ fry for big females

Adults eat fry, so dense plants (java moss, floating plants) or a breeding box help. Read molly beranak for pregnancy signs and the guide to ikan bertelur atau beranak.

If you don't want hundreds of fish, keep males only, or keep species that eat surplus fry.

Feeding

Both are omnivores that love vegetable matter. Feed a quality flake or small pellet with spirulina, plus occasional blanched vegetables and frozen or live foods. Mollies in particular graze algae off plants and glass, which helps keep the tank tidy.

Which Should You Choose?

Pick platies if:

  • You have a 2 kaki tank or smaller community tank
  • You don't want to adjust water chemistry
  • You want a hardy first fish

Pick mollies if:

  • You have a 3 kaki tank or larger
  • You're willing to test water and add buffering
  • You want bigger, bolder livebearers like sailfin or balloon mollies

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is easier for beginners, molly or platy?

Platies. They're smaller, hardier and more tolerant of the soft water common in Malaysia.

Why is my molly swaying in place?

This is often called "the shimmies" and is usually linked to soft water, low minerals, poor water quality or cold. Test pH, GH and KH and raise them if needed.

How big do mollies get compared to platies?

Mollies usually reach 8–12 cm, and platies about 5–6 cm.
