Ikan Bertelur atau Beranak? Egg-Layers vs Livebearers Explained

Ikan bertelur atau beranak? Most aquarium fish lay eggs (bertelur), but a popular group called livebearers gives birth to free-swimming babies (beranak). In Malaysian tanks, the main livebearers are guppy, molly, platy and swordtail. Betta (ikan laga), goldfish, koi fish, angelfish, tetras, rasboras, corydoras and gouramis are all egg-layers. The table below gives the quick answer for each species, and the rest of this guide explains what breeding needs in each case.

Ikan Bertelur atau Beranak? Quick Answer Table

Fish Bertelur or beranak? How it breeds Parents eat young?
Ikan laga (betta) Bertelur Male builds a bubble nest, guards eggs Male guards; may eat some eggs
Ikan emas (goldfish) Bertelur Scatters sticky eggs on plants Yes, eats eggs
Ikan koi Bertelur Scatters eggs in ponds, usually on plants or spawning ropes Yes
Ikan guppy Beranak Internal fertilisation, live fry Yes, eats fry
Ikan molly Beranak Live fry, larger than guppy fry Yes
Ikan platy / swordtail Beranak Live fry Yes
Ikan manfish (angelfish) Bertelur Lays eggs on a flat leaf or slate, pair guards Young pairs often eat eggs
Tetra / rasbora Bertelur Scatters eggs among fine plants Yes
Corydoras Bertelur Sticks eggs on glass and leaves Yes
Ikan gurami hiasan (gourami) Bertelur Bubble nest, like betta Male guards
Discus Bertelur Lays on a cone or flat surface, parents feed fry with skin mucus Usually guard

Easy rule: if a fish shop calls a species a "livebearer", it beranak. Almost everything else in the freshwater section bertelur.

What Is a Livebearer (Ikan Beranak)?

Livebearers fertilise eggs inside the female's body. In guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails, the male has a modified anal fin called a gonopodium that he uses to mate. The eggs develop inside the female, and she releases fully formed fry that can swim and eat straight away.

Key things that surprise new keepers:

  • One mating, several batches. Female guppies and mollies can store sperm and drop several batches of fry from a single mating, even after the male is removed.
  • Roughly monthly births. In our warm 26–31°C water, gestation is usually about 3–5 weeks, faster at the warmer end.
  • Visible "gravid spot". A dark patch near the vent of a pregnant guppy or molly grows bigger and darker as birth approaches.

What livebearer breeding needs

  1. More females than males: about 1 male to 2–3 females, so no single female is harassed.
  2. Cover for fry: dense plants such as java moss, hornwort or floating plants, or a breeding and isolation box.
  3. Stable, harder water: livebearers prefer slightly hard, alkaline water. Much Malaysian tap water is soft with low KH, so a pinch of mineral supplement or crushed coral in the filter can help. Test, don't guess.
  4. Fine food for fry: crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp (artemia) or fry foods.

What Is an Egg-Layer (Ikan Bertelur)?

Egg-layers release eggs and sperm into the water or onto a surface, where fertilisation happens outside the body. That sounds simple, but egg-layers break into very different breeding styles, and each needs a different setup.

1. Egg-scatterers

Goldfish, koi fish, tetras, rasboras, danios and barbs scatter hundreds of tiny eggs and give no parental care. They will eat their own eggs, so breeders use spawning mops, fine-leaved plants or mesh so eggs fall out of reach, then remove the parents.

2. Bubble-nest builders

Betta and gouramis are the classic Malaysian examples. The male blows a raft of bubbles at the surface, wraps around the female, then carries the falling eggs up into the nest and guards them. The female should be removed after spawning. Read why bettas do this in kenapa ikan laga buat buih.

3. Substrate spawners

Angelfish, discus, rams and many cichlids clean a flat surface (a leaf, slate, rock or the glass) and lay rows of eggs on it. The pair fans and guards them. Young angelfish pairs often eat their first few batches; this usually improves with practice.

4. Egg-depositors

Corydoras stick eggs one by one onto glass and leaves. Killifish lay eggs in moss or peat.

What egg-layer breeding needs

  • A conditioned pair or group: feed live or frozen foods (bloodworm, artemia) for 1–2 weeks before spawning.
  • A spawning site: bubble-nest fish need calm water and a floating leaf; scatterers need a mop or plants; cichlids need a slate.
  • Gentle filtration: a sponge filter, so eggs and tiny fry aren't sucked in.
  • Infusoria-sized first food: most egg-layer fry are far smaller than livebearer fry and cannot eat crushed flakes for the first days.

Livebearer vs Egg-Layer: Which Is Easier to Breed?

Livebearer (beranak) Egg-layer (bertelur)
Effort to start Almost none; happens by itself Needs pairing, conditioning, a spawning setup
Fry size at birth Large, swim immediately Tiny, often need infusoria first
Number of young Usually tens per batch Tens to hundreds or more per spawn
Main risk Parents and tankmates eat fry; overpopulation Eggs eaten, fungus on eggs, fry starving
Best for Beginners and kids Keepers wanting a project

For beginners, livebearers are the easy win: put a few healthy guppies or mollies in a planted tank and you will almost certainly see fry. The real challenge is having too many, so plan where extra fish will go.

Malaysian Tips for Breeding Either Type

  • Heat speeds everything up. At 28–31°C, eggs hatch faster and livebearer gestation is shorter, but warm water holds less oxygen. An air pump with a sponge filter is the classic breeding-tank setup.
  • Use anti klorin for every water change. Fry and eggs are very sensitive to chlorine. See our Malaysian tap water guide.
  • Malaysian-bred stock adapts well. Johor is a major guppy and tetra producer, so locally bred fish are already used to our temperatures.
  • Don't release extra fry. Guppies and mollies are already established in Malaysian drains and rivers. Give extras to friends or other hobbyists, never to a longkang or river.

Common Mistakes

  1. Assuming a fat fish is pregnant. A swollen egg-layer like a goldfish may be full of eggs, or it may be sick (dropsy, constipation). Only livebearers get "pregnant".
  2. Leaving fry in a community tank. Almost every fish, including the parents, eats fry.
  3. Feeding fry big food. Use fry foods or live foods sized for small mouths.
  4. Too many males. Constant chasing stresses females and can cause miscarriages in livebearers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ikan laga bertelur atau beranak?

Ikan laga bertelur. Ikan jantan akan buat sarang buih di permukaan air, kemudian kumpul telur ke dalam sarang dan jaga telur sehingga menetas, biasanya dalam masa 1–2 hari.

Ikan emas bertelur atau beranak?

Ikan emas (goldfish) bertelur.

Is a molly a livebearer?

Yes. Mollies, guppies, platies and swordtails are all livebearers. Mollies produce relatively large fry and prefer slightly harder water.

Do koi fish lay eggs?

Yes. Koi fish are egg-scatterers. In Malaysian ponds they usually spawn in the early morning, leaving sticky eggs on plants, roots or spawning ropes, which the adults will eat if left.
