Diamond Tetra (Moenkhausia Pittieri)

Introducing Moenkhausia pittieri, commonly known as the Diamond Tetra, a luminous addition to freshwater aquariums. Its diamond-bright scales catch the light and shift with every movement, turning even a simple glance into a moment of color and motion.

Designed for serenity and social behavior, this species shines in planted community tanks where it can swim in graceful schools.

Why you'll love the Diamond Tetra

• Striking iridescent shimmer: each individual has a mosaic of reflective scales that sparkle in natural and LED lighting.
• Energetic schooling behavior: best in groups of 6–8 to feel secure and display natural, cohesive swimming patterns.
• Peaceful community compatibility: gentle temperament makes it a reliable choice alongside other small, non-aggressive fish.
• Compact size with big presence: typically grows to about 4–5 cm (roughly 2 inches), ideal for mid-level focal interest in medium to larger tanks.
• Conservative care demands: adaptable to common community tank setups with stable, lightly acidic to neutral water.

Care and setup

Tank size and layout: A 20-gallon or larger tank provides ample room for a small school to move and graze among plants, driftwood, and gentle currents. For nano-tank enthusiasts, a group of 6–8 can still thrive in 20 gallons if the setup includes ample hiding spaces and dim lighting.

Water parameters: Keep a stable environment with a pH in the 6.5–7.5 range and a temperature between 74–78°F (23–26°C). Use a reliable filter and regular partial water changes to maintain clean, clear water and low nitrate levels.

Diet: Diamond Tetras are omnivores. Provide a varied diet including high-quality flake or micro- pellet foods, plus occasional live or frozen treats such as daphnia, brine shrimp, or finely chopped bloodworms to keep them vibrant and active.

Tank mates and behavior: Pair them with other peaceful mid-swimmers and small schooling species. Avoid larger, aggressive fish that may harass or outcompete them for food. Keep lighting moderate to prevent stress and to maximize their shimmering display during feed times.

Breeding notes: While more challenging in a community tank, a dedicated breeding setup with soft, slightly acidic water and a nutrient-rich substrate has been successful for some hobbyists. Expect small, free-swimming fry that require ready cover and ample tiny foods.

What makes this Diamond Tetra stand out

Unlike more common tetras, Moenkhausia pittieri offers a distinct, jewel-like luminosity that elevates the visual appeal of any aquarium. Its robust temperament, when kept in proper groups, makes it a reliable centerpiece that is both entertaining to watch and relatively straightforward to care for.
