Jenis Ikan Tetra: Glowlight, Rummy Nose, Black Skirt & More Tetra Types in Malaysia
There are dozens of jenis ikan tetra (types of tetra) in Malaysian shops, but most beginners end up choosing from about ten: neon, cardinal, glowlight, rummy nose, black skirt, black neon, lemon, serpae, emperor and the colour-dyed or "warna warni" types. The hardiest in warm Malaysian tanks are black skirt, black neon, glowlight and lemon tetra. Rummy nose, cardinal and emperor tetra are lovely but want more stable water. Serpae and black skirt nip fins, so keep them away from bettas. Keep any tetra in a group of at least 6, and ideally 10 or more.
Tetras are a genuinely Malaysian success story. According to The Star, tetra was the top-selling ornamental species after arowana in Malaysia's 2023 ornamental fish production, and many are bred on farms in Johor. So the tetras in your local shop are often Malaysian-bred and already used to warm water.

Jenis Ikan Tetra Explained
Neon and cardinal tetra
The neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) has a red stripe on the rear half only. The cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) has red along its whole belly. Cardinals actually handle Malaysian warmth better than neons, which prefer the low-to-mid 20s. Both look best in a planted tank with dark substrate. Browse cardinal tetra (axelrodi) listings for those.
Glowlight tetra
A small, peaceful tetra with a glowing orange-red line. Hardy, inexpensive and one of the best first tetras for a 2 kaki tank.
Rummy nose tetra
Famous for its bright red nose and black-and-white striped tail, and for schooling tightly. Experienced keepers use the red nose as a water-quality signal: when ammonia rises or the fish are stressed, the colour fades. Add rummy noses only to a mature, cycled tank.
Black skirt tetra (ikan tetra hitam)
A tall-bodied grey-black tetra with a flowing "skirt" of fins. Also sold in long-fin and white (albino) forms. Very hardy in heat, but a known fin-nipper.
Black neon tetra
Not a neon at all, but a hardy tetra with a green-white line over a black stripe. A great choice if neon tetras keep dying on you.
Serpae and other red tetras
Bright red, active and tough, but nippy. Fine with fast fish like danios and barbs; not with bettas, angelfish or guppies.
Coloured "ikan tetra warna warni"
Shops sell several colourful tetras under this name. Some are natural colour strains. Others are dyed or genetically modified (such as GloFish). Dyed fish lose colour over time and are a welfare concern. Genetically modified fish fall under the Biosafety Act 2007, so check with the National Biosafety Board before buying any GM fish, and do not buy if the legality is unclear.
Tetra Care in Malaysia
Water and temperature
Most tetras come from soft, slightly acidic South American rivers. That is good news: much of Malaysia's tap water is already soft. What tetras do not like is sudden change. Key points:
- Treat every water change with anti klorin. Malaysian tap water is chlorinated, and chlorine burns gills. See our tap water guide.
- Keep the tank at a steady temperature. 26–29°C is ideal for most. Above 31°C, add aeration or a cooling fan.
- Add daun ketapang (catappa leaves) or driftwood for a slight tint and softer pH. Many tetras colour up in tea-coloured water.
- Change 20–30% of the water weekly rather than doing big, rare changes.
Group size
Tetras are schooling fish. Kept in 2s and 3s, they hide, lose colour and get stressed. Aim for:
| Tank | Suggested school |
|---|---|
| 2 kaki (~55 L) | One species, 10–12 fish, or two species of 6–8 |
| 3 kaki (~155 L) | 2–3 species of 10+ each |
| 4 kaki (~230 L) | Large schools, plus congo tetra |
For tank volumes, see our aquarium size guide.
Feeding
Tetras have small mouths. Feed fine flakes or micro pellets once or twice a day, plus frozen bloodworm, daphnia or baby brine shrimp a few times a week. Variety keeps colours strong.
Tetras With Bettas: Which Are Safe?
A betta's long fins are a target for nippy fish. If you want tetras with a male betta in a planted 2 kaki or bigger tank:
Generally safe: neon, cardinal, glowlight, black neon, X-ray, ember tetra.
Avoid: black skirt, serpae, other red "minor" types, and any long-fin tetra variety that may be mistaken for a rival.
Always watch the first week and have a plan B (a divider or separate tank). Our betta care guide covers suitable tank mates in more detail.
Common Tetra Problems
- New tetras dying in the first week: usually an uncycled tank, chlorine, or a temperature shock during acclimatisation. Float the bag and add tank water slowly over 20–30 minutes.
- Neon tetra disease: pale patches and a bent spine. There is no reliable cure, so remove affected fish.
- White spot: very common after transport. See our white spot treatment guide.
Buying Tetras on FishyHub
Browse tetras for sale and the wider small community fishes category. Before you buy:
- Check the size listed and whether the photo is the actual batch or representative.
- Buy the whole school at once from the same seller if possible.
- Check the seller's location, delivery or self-collect options and live-arrival terms. If you are in Sabah or Sarawak, ask the seller first, as live fish take longer to reach East Malaysia.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan tetra perlu berapa ekor?
Sekurang-kurangnya 6 ekor, tetapi 10 ekor atau lebih lebih baik. Ikan tetra hidup berkumpulan dan akan stres jika terlalu sedikit.
Which tetra is the hardiest for beginners in Malaysia?
Black neon, glowlight, X-ray and black skirt tetra (if you have no long-finned fish) handle warm water and minor mistakes best.
Why do my neon tetras keep dying?
Usually because they were added to a new, uncycled tank, or the water was not dechlorinated. Neons also prefer slightly cooler water than most Malaysian tanks, so add aeration and avoid direct sun.
Neon or cardinal tetra: which is better for Malaysia?
Cardinals tolerate warmer water better, which suits most Malaysian homes. Neons are cheaper and easier to find.
