White Spot pada Ikan: Ubat Ikan, Garam Ikan & Treatment Guide for Malaysia

You look into the tank and your fish is covered in tiny white dots, like someone sprinkled salt on it. That's almost certainly white spot, also called ich or Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. It's one of the most common diseases in ikan hiasan, and it can kill a tank of fish if left alone. The good news: caught early, it's very treatable.

This guide explains how white spot works, which ubat ikan to use, how much garam ikan (aquarium salt) is safe, and why the "turn up the heat" advice you see online needs care in Malaysia.

What White Spot Looks Like

  • Small white dots about the size of a grain of salt or sugar, on the body, fins and gills
  • Fish rubbing or "flashing" against rocks, wood or the substrate
  • Clamped fins, hiding, less interest in food
  • Fast gill movement or gasping, when the gills are badly affected

Don't confuse it with

  • Velvet: a finer, gold or rusty dust, easier to see with a torch from the side. Common in ikan laga (bettas). Treatment overlaps, but velvet is more aggressive.
  • Fungus: fluffy, cotton-like patches, not neat dots.
  • Breeding tubercles: male goldfish grow small white bumps on the gill covers and front fins during breeding season. These are normal, and only appear in those spots.
  • Epistylis or other growths: larger, irregular white patches.

If you're not sure, ask an experienced keeper or the seller, and share a clear photo.

How White Spot Works (and Why It Matters for Treatment)

The parasite has a life cycle with three main stages:

  1. On the fish: each white dot is a parasite buried under the skin. Here it is protected from medicine.
  2. Falling off: the mature parasite drops off and forms a cyst on the glass, gravel or plants, where it divides into hundreds of new parasites.
  3. Free-swimming: these new parasites swim off to find a fish. This is the only stage medicine can kill.

That's why treatment takes days, not hours. You're waiting for every parasite to leave the fish and become vulnerable. It's also why spots may seem to get worse in the first day or two of treatment: you're seeing parasites already under the skin.

Warm water speeds up this cycle. In typical Malaysian tank temperatures of 27–30°C, the cycle runs faster than in cooler countries, so the free-swimming stage arrives sooner and treatment usually works quicker.

The Heat Method: Careful in Malaysia

Overseas guides often say "raise the temperature to 30°C" to treat white spot. Two things to know:

  • Many Malaysian tanks are already at or near 30°C. You may already be getting the speed-up effect.
  • Pushing much higher is risky. Some ich strains are said to stop reproducing at higher temperatures, but going above about 31–32°C in a home tank lowers oxygen, stresses fish and can be fatal for goldfish, Caridina shrimp and other cool-water species.

So in Malaysia, the practical approach is: don't chase high temperatures. Keep the water stable at its normal level, add strong aeration, and rely on proper medication or salt. If you do raise temperature slightly in a tank that runs cooler (for example in an air-conditioned room), do it slowly and add an air pump.

Ubat Ikan for White Spot

Most white spot medicines sold in Malaysia are based on one or a mix of these ingredients:

Active ingredient Notes
Malachite green Classic white spot treatment. Often combined with formalin. Toxic to shrimp and snails; use with care on scaleless fish.
Malachite green + formalin Common "white spot" formula. Effective, but formalin reduces oxygen, so aerate well.
Methylene blue (ubat biru) Gentle, widely available. Useful for small tanks and hospital tanks, and for fungus on eggs. Stains silicone and kills beneficial bacteria, so best used in a separate tank.
Copper-based Effective but very toxic to invertebrates and some fish. Follow the label exactly.

How to medicate properly

  1. Read the label and dose for your real water volume. A 2 kaki tank holds about 55 L of water, not 65 L.
  2. Remove activated carbon from the filter. Carbon absorbs medicine.
  3. Do a water change and gravel vacuum before each dose if the label allows. This removes cysts from the substrate.
  4. Add an air pump. Many medicines reduce oxygen.
  5. Keep treating until a few days after the last spot disappears, as the label directs. Stopping early is the main reason white spot comes back.
  6. Take out shrimp and snails, or treat fish in a separate hospital tank.

Sensitive fish

Scaleless and small-scaled fish such as corydoras, loaches, plecos and many catfish are more sensitive to medicine and salt. Many labels recommend half doses for them. Shrimp and snails should not be in a tank being treated with malachite green or copper.

Garam Ikan: What Is Aquarium Salt For?

Garam ikan is plain sodium chloride without iodine or anti-caking agents. It helps fish produce slime coat, reduces osmotic stress and, at the right level, makes life hard for white spot parasites.

How much salt?

Purpose Typical dose
General tonic about 1 g per litre
White spot treatment for tolerant fish about 2–3 g per litre, raised gradually over a day or two
  • Dissolve salt in tank water first, then add it slowly.
  • Only replace salt you remove. Salt does not evaporate. When you top up evaporated water, add fresh water only; when you do a water change, add salt for the volume you replaced.
  • Who tolerates it: goldfish, ikan koi, mollies, guppies and most livebearers handle salt well. Bettas usually tolerate a lower level.
  • Who doesn't: corydoras, loaches, plecos, many tetras, shrimp and most live plants.
  • Don't use table salt with iodine or additives, and don't use rock salt of unknown origin.

When unsure, use a lower dose or choose a medicine instead. Salt and medicine together can be harsh, so follow the medicine label on whether it can be combined.

White Spot by Fish Type

Ikan laga (betta)

Bettas often live in small containers where temperature and water quality swing quickly. Move the fish to a clean, dechlorinated container with gentle aeration, use a mild white spot medicine or low-level salt, and change water regularly. Watch for velvet, which looks similar.

Ikan guppy

Guppies handle salt well, which makes salt a good first option for a guppy-only tank. If the tank has corydoras or shrimp, move the guppies to a separate tank first.

Koi fish and goldfish

In ponds, white spot spreads quickly when new fish arrive. Salt is widely used in koi and goldfish keeping, but calculate pond volume carefully. For ponds with plants or other livestock, ask a koi specialist before dosing. Keep aeration high, since goldfish and koi are big oxygen users.

Why Did My Fish Get White Spot?

  • New fish introduced without quarantine (the most common cause)
  • Sudden temperature changes, such as aircond switched on and off, or a cold water change
  • Poor water quality from overfeeding or a dirty filter
  • Stress from transport or overcrowding

Prevention

  1. Quarantine new fish in a separate tank for two to three weeks before adding them to your main tank.
  2. Keep temperature stable. Match water-change temperature to the tank.
  3. Always use anti klorin for tap water.
  4. Don't overstock, and keep up with weekly water changes.
  5. Test your water so you spot ammonia problems early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does white spot treatment take? Usually around one to two weeks, including a few days after the last spot disappears. In warm Malaysian tanks it is often on the shorter side.

Should I raise the temperature to treat white spot? Only with care. Most Malaysian tanks are already warm, and pushing above about 31–32°C lowers oxygen and stresses fish. Medication or salt with good aeration is the safer route.

Do I need to treat the whole tank? Yes, if one fish has white spot, assume the parasite is in the water. Treat the whole tank, or move all fish to a hospital tank and leave the main tank fishless for a while so the parasites die out.
