Nebula Glitter

The Nebula Glitter is a stunning, aggressive 5–6cm cichlid demanding high-pH water. A jewel-toned showpiece for experienced aquarists.

• Water Conditions & Chemistry: The Nebula Glitter is a strict high-pH specialist, requiring a stable alkaline environment maintained between 8.2 and 9.0 on the pH scale. This is not a fish for soft, acidic water—attempting to keep it in neutral or low-pH conditions will result in chronic stress, loss of colour, and a dramatically shortened lifespan. The water hardness should be elevated accordingly, with a general hardness (dGH) of 12–20° and a carbonate hardness (kH) of 10–15° to provide a robust buffering capacity that prevents dangerous pH crashes. Temperature should be held steady in the tropical range of 24–28°C (75–82°F), with 26°C being the sweet spot for long-term health. Filtration must be powerful yet gentle; the species hails from fast-moving, oxygen-rich rift-lake biotopes, so we recommend a high-turnover canister filter or a sump system that generates strong surface agitation. Weekly water changes of 30–40% are non-negotiable, as this aggressive species produces a significant bioload that will otherwise degrade water quality and precipitate ammonia spikes. Consider adding crushed coral, aragonite sand, or limestone rockwork to the substrate to naturally reinforce the alkaline chemistry the Nebula Glitter demands.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Owing to its inherently aggressive and territorial disposition, the Nebula Glitter is best housed in a dedicated species tank or a carefully curated community of similarly robust, high-pH-tolerant fish. Ideal companions include other hardy African cichlids of comparable size such as Pseudotropheus species, Labidochromis caeruleus, or Iodotropheus sprengerae, provided the aquarium is large enough—minimum 120 litres—to allow each fish to establish and defend its own territory. Avoid slow-moving, long-finned, or timid species like angelfish, guppies, or discus, as the Nebula Glitter will relentlessly harass, nip, and often kill them. Similarly, do not house it with bottom-dwelling catfish that lack the speed to escape its aggression. In larger systems of 200 litres or more, you may attempt to keep a small group of five to seven Nebula Glitters, but be prepared to cull or separate individuals that become excessively dominant. Always provide abundant hiding places—caves, rock crevices, and inverted terracotta pots—to diffuse aggression and give subordinate fish refuge. Avoid overcrowding as a strategy; unlike some cichlids, the Nebula Glitter does not respond well to high stocking densities and will instead escalate territorial disputes.
• Feeding Habits & Diet: The Nebula Glitter is an omnivorous feeder with a strong carnivorous lean, and in its natural habitat it actively forages for insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton amongst rocky substrates. In the aquarium, it thrives on a varied, protein-rich diet that mirrors this natural intake. Offer a high-quality cichlid pellet or flake food formulated for African rift-lake species as the dietary staple, ensuring the first few ingredients are fish meal or shrimp meal rather than plant fillers. Supplement this with frozen or live foods two to three times per week—bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and chopped blackworms are all eagerly accepted and will enhance the fish's metallic, sparkling iridescence. You may also offer finely chopped prawn, mussel, or squid as an occasional treat, though never feed mammalian meat such as beef heart, which can cause fatal digestive complications in cichlids. Feed small portions two to three times daily, offering only what the fish will consume within two minutes to prevent overfeeding and water fouling. While some cichlids appreciate vegetable matter, the Nebula Glitter prefers animal-based nutrition; still, offering the occasional spirulina wafer or blanched spinach leaf provides valuable dietary variety and supports digestive regularity. Observe feeding behaviour closely—an aggressive feeder by nature, the Nebula Glitter may bully tank mates away from food, so distribute offerings across multiple zones of the aquarium to ensure equitable access.
• Care Requirements & Aquascaping: Maintaining the Nebula Glitter demands an experienced aquarist prepared to commit to rigorous, consistent husbandry. A minimum tank size of 90 litres is advised for a single specimen, scaling up substantially for groups or community setups. The tank should be aquascaped to replicate a rocky rift-lake shore—stacked limestone or slate formations that create a labyrinth of caves, overhangs, and crevices are essential for the fish's psychological well-being and to curb destructive aggression. Use a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, as the Nebula Glitter will enthusiastically dig and rearrange its environment; avoid sharp-edged gravel that can damage its delicate mouthparts during excavation. Lighting should be moderate to bright, which encourages the vivid blue, purple, and silver "glitter" speckling that gives this species its common name. Water flow should be strong and directional to simulate natural currents, which also helps to oxygenate the water and keep waste in suspension for filtration. Perform regular testing of pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, maintaining a strict regime of weekly water changes to keep nitrate below 20ppm. Quarantine all new arrivals for a minimum of four weeks before introduction, as the Nebula Glitter is susceptible to common cichlid ailments like ich and hole-in-the-head disease when stressed. Never keep it with live plants that require soft, acidic water; instead, use artificial silk or plastic plants or hardy, high-pH-tolerant species like Anubias or Java fern anchored to rockwork.
