Rosetail Betta (King rosetail purple butterfly)

King Rosetail Purple Butterfly Betta: show-stopping purple butterfly fins, 5-6cm. Aggressive, high pH specialist for experienced aquarists.

• Water Conditions: This King Rosetail Purple Butterfly betta is best suited to a high pH environment, typically between 7.5 and 8.0. While bettas are often associated with slightly acidic water, this line has been acclimated to higher pH and will thrive provided parameters remain stable. Sudden swings in pH are far more dangerous than a consistent reading, so avoid using pH-adjusting chemicals unless absolutely necessary. Temperature should be maintained between 24–28°C (75–82°F), with 26°C being ideal for colour, appetite, and immune function. Use a reliable aquarium heater and check it daily. Water hardness of 5–20 dGH is acceptable; moderate to hard water helps buffer pH. Because ammonia is significantly more toxic at high pH, your tank must be fully cycled before adding this fish. Test regularly and keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, and nitrate below 20 ppm. Gentle filtration is essential — a sponge filter or a baffled hang-on-back filter works well. Strong currents will stress the heavy, ruffled rosetail fins and can lead to fin damage. Perform a 25% water change weekly, vacuuming the substrate to remove debris. Always pre-treat replacement water with a quality dechlorinator and match temperature and pH closely to avoid shock.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Given the aggressive temperament typical of king bettas, this fish is best kept alone in a dedicated aquarium. If you wish to attempt a community setup, you will need a tank of at least 80 litres (20 gallons) with plenty of visual barriers and territories. The only reliable tank mates are peaceful, bottom-dwelling species that occupy a different zone and do not nip fins. Suitable options include Corydoras catfish (kept in groups of six or more), Otocinclus (groups of three or more), and Kuhli loaches. These fish are calm, armoured, and generally ignored by bettas. Avoid all other bettas, especially males, as they will fight, often to the death. Also avoid gouramis, guppies, mollies, platies, barbs, most tetras (neons, serpae, black skirts), danios, and any fish with long, flowing fins — these are either fin nippers or direct competitors. Snails such as nerites or mysteries may work, but some bettas will attack them relentlessly. Shrimp will almost certainly be eaten. Always introduce tank mates before the betta, rearrange decor to break existing territories, and have a spare tank ready for emergencies. Monitor closely for the first two weeks; aggression can escalate without warning.
• Feeding Habits: This betta is a carnivorous insectivore and requires a high-protein diet to maintain its vibrant purple butterfly colouration and thick rosetail fins. The staple diet should be high-quality betta pellets specifically formulated for carnivores. Soak 2–3 pellets in tank water for five minutes before feeding to prevent constipation and bloating. Offer this amount twice daily, and only what the fish can consume within two minutes. Supplement with frozen or live foods several times a week: bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, mysis shrimp, and wingless fruit flies are all excellent choices. Variety is crucial — a monotonous diet leads to nutritional deficiencies, dull colours, and weakened immunity. King bettas have larger appetites than standard bettas, but their stomachs remain small, so overfeeding is a serious risk. Overfeeding causes obesity, swim bladder disorder, and water quality problems. Fast your betta one day per week to allow its digestive system to rest. Always remove uneaten food after feeding to prevent ammonia spikes, which are especially dangerous in high pH water. Never feed human foods, bread, or generic tropical flakes, which lack the necessary protein and can foul the water. If your betta refuses food, check water parameters first; refusal is often the earliest sign of stress or illness.
• Care Requirements: A single King Rosetail Purple Butterfly betta requires a minimum tank size of 20 litres (5 gallons), though 40 litres (10 gallons) or more is strongly recommended. The rosetail mutation produces extremely full, ruffled fins that are heavy and delicate — they need space to swim without brushing against rough surfaces. Use a lid, as bettas are accomplished jumpers. Aquascape with smooth rocks, driftwood, and live or silk plants. Avoid plastic plants with sharp edges, which shred rosetail fins and lead to fin rot. Indian almond leaves are beneficial for their antibacterial properties, but they can slightly lower pH; monitor closely in a high pH setup. Provide hiding spots and floating plants or a betta hammock to give your fish resting places near the surface. Acclimation is critical: use the drip method over 30–45 minutes, especially when moving from a different pH. Rosetail bettas are prone to fin damage and subsequent infections, so maintain pristine water quality. Perform weekly 25% water changes, rinse filter media in old tank water, and never use soap. Watch for signs of illness: clamped fins, lethargy, loss of appetite, white spots (ich), or frayed edges (fin rot). Quarantine any new fish for two weeks before adding them to the main tank. King bettas can live 3–5 years with excellent care, but their aggressive nature and high pH requirement make them unsuitable for beginners. They can be trained to recognise their keeper and will interact through the glass, but do not house them with other bettas. Provide mental stimulation with a betta mirror for a few minutes daily, but remove it to prevent stress. With dedicated care, this purple butterfly king rosetail will reward you with breathtaking colour and personality.
