Product Description

A miniature waterfall-climber, grazing algae from torrent-polished rocks.

Meet the Birdsong Goby (Stiphodon surrufus), a peaceful freshwater algae-grazing goby for mature, oxygen-rich aquariums with smooth stones and gentle flow.

  • Water conditions: The Birdsong Goby thrives in stable, well-oxygenated freshwater with a temperature of roughly 22–27°C (72–81°F), pH between 6.5 and 8.0, and moderate hardness. These gobies come from flowing streams and appreciate strong water movement, so aim for a gentle-to-moderate current created by a filter outlet, powerhead, or spray bar without turning the tank into a whirlpool. Dissolved oxygen is especially important; use good surface agitation and avoid overcrowding. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrates low through regular partial water changes, typically 20–25% weekly. Avoid sudden swings in temperature, pH, or hardness, as these fish are sensitive to unstable conditions. A mature tank with visible biofilm and algae growth is far more suitable than a freshly cycled setup.
  • Tank setup and aquascaping: Provide smooth, rounded stones and pebbles, which are natural grazing surfaces and resting spots for these bottom-dwelling gobies. Sand or smooth gravel is ideal, with driftwood, Java fern, Anubias, and other hardy plants adding cover and visual structure. The Birdsong Goby is a known jumper, so a tight-fitting lid with no large gaps is essential. Lighting should support natural algae and biofilm growth without causing nuisance algae blooms. Keep the aquascape secure, as these gobies may dig slightly around stones or squeeze into narrow crevices. A species-appropriate setup with mature surfaces, clean water, and steady flow will help them settle quickly and display natural perching behaviour.
  • Suitable tank mates: Choose peaceful, small-to-medium community fish that will not bully or outcompete the goby. Good options include small rasboras, ember tetras, small danios, and other calm midwater species. Peaceful bottom dwellers such as small Corydoras can work in a spacious setup, while cherry shrimp and small snails are usually safe. Avoid large or aggressive cichlids, goldfish, loaches, crayfish, and boisterous bottom feeders that may dominate food or harass the goby. If keeping multiple algae grazers, ensure the tank produces enough biofilm to support them all; otherwise, territorial disputes or starvation can occur. Males may spar, especially in smaller tanks, so provide visual barriers and enough floor space.
  • Feeding habits: The Birdsong Goby is primarily an aufwuchs grazer, scraping algae and biofilm from stones, wood, and glass with its specialised mouth. A mature aquarium with natural grazing surfaces is essential, but supplement with spirulina-based wafers, Repashy Soilent Green, blanched zucchini or cucumber, and other vegetable-rich foods. Many specimens accept small amounts of frozen baby brine shrimp or daphnia, but these should be occasional treats rather than the staple diet. Feed small portions and observe carefully, as these gobies can be slow to recognise prepared foods and may be outcompeted by faster tank mates. A slightly sunken belly is a warning sign; if seen, increase available biofilm and offer suitable grazing foods near the goby’s territory.
  • Care and acclimation: Acclimatise slowly using the drip method, especially after shipping, and quarantine new arrivals where possible. These gobies can be sensitive to transport stress and sudden water changes, so patience during introduction is important. Maintain a consistent maintenance routine, keep filtration reliable, and avoid unnecessary medication use. Because they are small and peaceful, avoid housing them with fish large enough to see them as food. Monitor body condition, activity, and colour regularly. The Birdsong Goby is best suited to experienced aquarists or careful beginners with a well-established tank, not a brand-new setup. With stable water, high oxygen, mature grazing surfaces, and peaceful companions, it makes a fascinating and active nano-to-medium community fish.
