Product Description

A black goby shot through with gold, clinging to rushing stones.

Golden Black Goby (Stiphodon aureofuscus) is a peaceful, algae-grazing freshwater goby for mature, high-flow aquariums with strong oxygen and natural biofilm.

  • Water conditions: The Golden Black Goby is a rheophilic freshwater goby that thrives in well-oxygenated, moderately flowing water. Aim for a temperature of 22–28°C, pH 6.5–7.8, general hardness around 5–12 dGH, and carbonate hardness of 2–8 dKH. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate low, ideally below 20 ppm, through regular maintenance and sensible stocking. Strong surface agitation and additional flow from a powerhead, spray bar, or canister outlet are highly beneficial, but avoid a violent torrent that exhausts the fish. Provide smooth rounded stones, cobbles, driftwood, and cave-like crevices for perching and shelter. This species is not suitable for a newly cycled or biologically immature aquarium; it needs a stable, mature system with visible biofilm, algae, and microfauna. Avoid sudden swings in temperature, pH, or hardness, and never place this goby in an uncycled quarantine or display tank.
  • Suitable tank mates: Choose peaceful, small-to-medium community fish that will not bully or outcompete a specialist biofilm grazer. Good companions include small rasboras, tetras, danios, white cloud mountain minnows, and other calm schooling species. Hillstream loaches and similar peaceful rheophilic fish can work well in a larger, high-flow setup. Adult cherry shrimp and similar dwarf shrimp are generally safe, though tiny shrimplets may be eaten. Avoid large cichlids, goldfish, aggressive loaches, crayfish, crabs, large plecos, and boisterous bottom feeders that monopolise food or disturb the goby’s preferred perching areas. Golden Black Gobies are peaceful but males can be mildly territorial with one another, especially in smaller tanks. Keep a single male in aquariums around 60 cm long, or use a larger footprint with one male and several females, and provide plenty of visual barriers and broken lines of sight.
  • Feeding habits: This goby is primarily a biofilm and algae grazer, not a typical meat-eating bottom feeder. In a mature aquarium it will graze aufwuchs, diatoms, soft green algae, and the micro-organisms living on stones, wood, and glass. That natural food supply should be supplemented with spirulina-based algae wafers, Repashy Soilent Green or similar gel foods, and small amounts of blanched zucchini, cucumber, spinach, or nori. Some specimens accept finely crushed sinking pellets, frozen baby brine shrimp, or microfauna, but high-protein foods should not form the staple diet. Feed small portions once or twice daily, removing uneaten food so it does not foul the water. If the tank is spotless and lacks algae or biofilm, the goby may slowly lose condition; provide smooth stones in a sunny or well-lit area for grazing and offer prepared algae foods regularly. Observe feeding closely, because wild-caught Stiphodon gobies can be shy and may need time to recognise prepared foods.
  • Care requirements: Acclimatise carefully using the drip method, quarantine where possible, and avoid copper-based medications, which can be harsh on sensitive gobies. Keep the aquarium covered, as these fish can climb or jump in strong flow. Provide a well-established setup with mature filtration, gentle-to-strong current, excellent oxygen saturation, shaded areas, and plenty of rocky perches. Golden Black Gobies are amphidromous in the wild, and captive breeding is not common, so most available specimens are wild-caught; choose healthy, active fish with clear eyes and no pinched belly. Perform regular partial water changes of around 20–30%, clean filters gently in tank water, and maintain stable parameters rather than chasing exact numbers. Do not overcrowd the tank, and avoid repeatedly rearranging the decor, which can stress territorial males. Monitor body condition, grazing behaviour, and social interactions. With a mature, high-flow aquarium and a steady supply of biofilm and algae-based foods, this peaceful goby makes a fascinating and unusual centrepiece for a specialist community setup.
