AOC Halfblack African cichlids are striking, aggressive high-pH fish for experienced keepers, offered at 4–5 cm and best in a species-specific Malawi setup.

• Water conditions: The AOC Halfblack is a high-pH African cichlid that should be kept in stable, well-buffered water rather than in a general tropical community. Aim for a pH of roughly 7.8–8.6, a general hardness of about 10–20 dGH, and a temperature of 24–28°C. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, and keep nitrate low through regular partial water changes, typically 25–30% weekly or slightly more in a heavily stocked Malawi setup. Use a reliable liquid test kit and avoid chasing pH with temporary chemicals; stable parameters are far safer than a perfect number that swings. A sand substrate, carbonate-based rocks, and good surface agitation help maintain buffering and oxygenation. These cichlids tolerate higher pH well, but they do not tolerate poor filtration, decaying food, or sudden changes in temperature and chemistry. Acclimatise new arrivals slowly, ideally with a drip method, and quarantine where possible before adding them to a display tank.
• Suitable tank mates: Because the AOC Halfblack has an aggressive, territorial temperament, tank mates must be chosen carefully. The safest options are robust African cichlids of similar size and disposition, such as other peacocks, suitable haplochromines, and carefully selected Malawi cichlids. Synodontis catfish can work in a large, well-structured Malawi aquarium, provided they have caves and are not small enough to be harassed. Avoid slow-moving, long-finned, or shy fish such as bettas, guppies, discus, angelfish, and small community species; they are likely to be bullied or injured. Avoid tiny invertebrates and small snails, which may be eaten or constantly disturbed. Mixing AOC Halfblacks with mbuna can be risky because mbuna are often more boisterous and may outcompete or harass peacock-type cichlids, while some peacocks can become aggressive toward more docile tank mates. If keeping more than one AOC Halfblack, use a large tank with plenty of visual barriers and consider a harem-style ratio with multiple females per male. Never add new fish without a plan for territory breaks and observation.
• Feeding habits: The AOC Halfblack is an eager feeder with a diet that should lean toward carnivorous/planktonivorous foods while still offering some variety. Offer high-quality sinking or slowly sinking cichlid pellets formulated for African cichlids, plus frozen or freeze-dried mysis, brine shrimp, krill, and occasional spirulina-based food for balance. At 4–5 cm, use small pellets or crush larger ones so the fish can swallow them comfortably. Feed two or three small meals per day rather than one large feed, and remove any uneaten food after a few minutes to protect water quality. Avoid fatty mammalian meats, cheap foods with excessive fillers, and live feeder fish, which introduce disease risk and are unnecessary. Because this cichlid is aggressive at feeding time, feed across the tank rather than in one spot so weaker tank mates can get their share. Monitor body condition: a slightly rounded belly is fine, but bloating, stringy waste, or refusal to feed can indicate stress, overfeeding, or water quality problems.
• Care requirements: Provide a mature aquarium with a good swimming length, secure rockwork, caves, and visual barriers that let fish establish territories without constant confrontation. A sand substrate is ideal because cichlids may sift or dig, and smooth rocks reduce injury risk during territorial disputes. Use strong filtration and good circulation, but avoid excessive current if it stresses the fish; surface movement should be strong enough to support oxygenation. Keep the tank covered, as cichlids can jump when startled or chased. Perform routine partial water changes, clean mechanical media regularly, and avoid disturbing the biological filter. Observe fins, scales, and behaviour daily: nipped fins, hiding, gasping, or loss of colour are early warning signs. Aggression management is part of care—use tank dividers if necessary, rearrange décor when adding fish, and avoid overcrowding a small tank in an attempt to spread aggression. They are best suited to experienced keepers who can maintain stable high-pH water and manage territorial behaviour consistently.
• Acclimation and long-term monitoring: Before purchase, confirm the exact adult size and trade form of the AOC Halfblack with your supplier, as common names can vary. Drip-acclimatise the fish to your tank’s temperature and chemistry, then release it with the lights off to reduce stress. Keep the first few weeks calm, test water frequently, and watch for aggression as the fish settles into a territory. Do not add it to an uncycled aquarium, and avoid mixing it with fish that cannot handle high pH or robust cichlid behaviour.
