Tankmates: Reef safe. Caveats: sand sifters can bury corals placed on the sand, and clown gobies (Gobiodon) occasionally damage the Acropora they live in. Neon gobies act as cleaners.
Feeding: Micropredators; sand sifters filter infauna from sand and need extra feeding in tanks without a mature sand bed or they starve.

Marine gobies are small, peaceful and full of character, which makes them some of the best fish for nano and community reef tanks. Some perch on rock and watch the world go by, others hover above their burrow, and a few share a home with a pistol shrimp in one of the reef's best-known partnerships.
These are saltwater gobies, different from the freshwater and brackish gobies found in local rivers and mangroves. FishyHub lists them from Malaysian marine shops and hobbyists, with prices in RM.
Yellow watchman and similar gobies sit at the entrance of a burrow, often shared with a pistol shrimp that digs while the goby keeps lookout. Hardy and great for beginners.
White and red with a tall dorsal fin, hovering near a bolt-hole. Technically a dartfish, but sold as a goby. Shy and a notorious jumper.
A sleeper goby that sifts mouthfuls of sand all day, keeping the sand bed clean. It needs a mature tank with a deep sand bed, and can starve in new or bare tanks.
Tiny gobies that perch among coral branches. Ideal for nano reefs, though some may irritate the SPS corals they sit in.
Small cleaner gobies with a neon stripe, often captive-bred. Short-lived, but very hardy and useful.

| Watchman | about 8–10 cm | 2 kaki / 60 cm / about 55–65 L | Mysis, pellets | Yes |
| Firefish | about 7–9 cm | 2 kaki / 60 cm / about 55–65 L, with a lid | Mysis, small pellets | Yes |
| Diamond | about 13–15 cm | 3 kaki / 90 cm / about 155–180 L, deep sand | Sand-sifted food, frozen foods | Moderate |
Like most reef fish, gobies prefer 24–27°C. Malaysian rooms at 26–31°C usually mean a chiller for reef tanks, and stable temperatures help these small fish most.
Watchman gobies and several shrimp gobies form partnerships with pistol shrimp (Alpheus). The shrimp builds and maintains a burrow, and the goby warns it of danger with tail flicks. To see this, give them a sand bed several cm deep and add the pair together or the goby first. It's one of the most rewarding behaviours to watch in a home reef.
Gobies are reef safe and mix with clownfish, blennies, chromis and dwarf angelfish. Avoid large wrasses, hawkfish, groupers and other predators that can eat small fish. Two gobies of the same species may squabble unless they're a pair, so keep one per species in small tanks. Most gobies jump, so fit a lid or mesh cover, especially for firefish and diamond gobies.
Check the species, size, and whether the photo shows the actual fish. Ask the seller if it is eating frozen food, which is especially important for diamond gobies. Confirm delivery, self-collect and live-arrival terms, and ask about longer delivery times to Sabah and Sarawak.
Sesuai.
Watchman and diamond gobies do, for burrowing and sifting. Clown and neon gobies are happy on rock or coral.
Watchman gobies and other shrimp gobies are the classic partners.
