Tankmates: Good with small peaceful warm-water fish such as cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, pencilfish and Corydoras sterbai. Avoid boisterous fish and other territorial bottom dwellers. Shrimplets get eaten.
Feeding: Slow, deliberate eaters; ensure food reaches them past faster mid-water fish. Frozen foods help new imports start eating.

The ram cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a small, jewel-like dwarf cichlid from the warm savannah streams of Venezuela and Colombia. Males grow to about 6–7 cm, with electric-blue spangles, a yellow-orange face and a red eye. Rams stay peaceful enough for a planted community tank yet still show real cichlid behaviour: pairing, digging and guarding eggs.
FishyHub lists rams from Malaysian breeders and aquarium shops, sold singly or as pairs, with prices in RM. Rams like warmer water than most community fish, so Malaysian room temperature suits them well. The challenge is water quality, not heat.
The classic form, close to wild colouring: blue-gold body, black bars and a red eye. "German" refers to early breeding lines in Europe, not where the fish are bred today.
A line-bred form that is almost entirely bright metallic blue with an orange face. Stunning, but often a little more delicate than German blues.
Yellow-gold body with red-orange face and fins. Gold rams stand out well against green plants.
Balloon rams have short, rounded bodies, and long-fin forms have extended fins. The Bolivian ram (Mikrogeophagus altispinosus) is a separate, slightly larger and hardier species.
| Care point | What works in Malaysia |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 27–30°C. That matches Malaysian room temperature (26–31°C), so a heater is rarely needed except in air-conditioned rooms. |
| Minimum tank | 2 kaki (60 cm), about 55–65 L, for one pair. Use a 3-foot tank for two pairs or a busy community. |
| Water | Soft, slightly acidic, very clean and stable |
| Temperament | Peaceful with other fish; mild squabbles between rams |
| Diet | Small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, daphnia |
| Beginner-friendly? | Intermediate. Add them to a well-cycled tank, not a new one. |
In cooler countries, rams struggle because keepers can't keep their tanks warm enough. Here the warm climate does that for you, and our naturally soft tap water is close to what rams prefer. Treat new water with anti klorin, and keep an eye on pH, which can slide in low-KH water. A test kit is worth having.
What rams don't forgive is rising nitrate and dirty water. Change around 25–30% weekly, avoid overfeeding, and give them a mature filter. Most "ram deaths" happen in brand-new tanks.
Set up fine sand so they can sift, with plants, a few pieces of kayu akuarium and flat stones for spawning. A gentle filter outflow is best, with an air stone on very hot days.
Males have longer, more pointed dorsal fins. Females are often smaller with a pink-red belly. A bonded pair cleans a flat stone, lays eggs and guards both eggs and fry. Young pairs sometimes eat their first few batches. Feed fry newly hatched artemia or fine fry food. Buying a pair that has already bonded saves a lot of trial and error.
Prices in RM depend on variety, size and whether you're buying a sexed or bonded pair. Common German blues are the usual entry point, while high-colour electric blues and proven pairs cost more. On each listing, check:
Rams are small and travel fairly well. Acclimatise them slowly on arrival. In Sabah or Sarawak, ask the seller about delivery first.
Ya.
They are the same species. German blues have natural markings, while electric blues are a line-bred, almost all-blue colour form.
Not towards other fish. Males may spar with each other and guard a spawning site.
It isn't essential, but plants and cover help them feel secure and show better colour.
