Ikan Kaloi as a Pet: Giant Gourami Care in Tanks & Ponds

Ikan kaloi (giant gourami, Osphronemus goramy) is best known in Malaysia as a food fish, but it also makes a tame, long-lived pet that learns to take food from your hand. The catch is size: a kaloi that's 5 cm in the shop can grow to around 45–60 cm. Plan for a pond or a 6-kaki tank for an adult, strong filtration, a diet that includes leafy greens, and a lifelong commitment, because kaloi should never be released into rivers or lakes.

Kaloi at a Glance

Need Recommendation
Adult size Commonly 45–60 cm in captivity; can reach larger
Lifespan Many years; often well over a decade
Juvenile tank 3–4 kaki for the first year or so
Adult home 6 kaki (~550 L) minimum, or a pond
Temperature 24–30°C; ideal for Malaysian conditions
Water Very tolerant; treated tap water, pH about 6.5–8.0
Diet Omnivore: pellets plus leafy greens; adults lean herbivorous
Temperament Usually peaceful, but eats small fish
Beginner-friendly? Easy to keep alive, hard to house long-term

How Big Does Ikan Kaloi Grow?

Kaloi grow steadily rather than explosively, but they never stop needing more space. As a rough guide:

  • Juveniles (5–15 cm): banded, with a pointed head. They look like an ordinary gourami.
  • Sub-adults (20–35 cm): bands fade, body deepens. A 4-kaki tank becomes tight.
  • Adults (40 cm and up): heavy-bodied, and males often develop a forehead hump and thicker lips.

Because they're labyrinth fish, kaloi breathe air from the surface as well as through their gills. That makes them tolerant of warm, low-oxygen water, but it doesn't make a small tank acceptable.

Pond vs Tank

Pond Tank
Space Easiest way to give an adult enough room Needs 6 kaki or larger for adults
Viewing From above; kaloi come up to be fed Side view, very interactive
Temperature Shade needed to avoid afternoon overheating Stable indoors
Risks Birds, cats, monitor lizards, flooding Jumping (use a lid), floor weight
Filtration Pond filter and pump Large canister or top filter, or sump

Many Malaysian keepers raise a kaloi in a tank while it's young, then move it to a garden pond. See artificial ponds and pond pumps if you're planning that move. Our koi pond guide covers pond basics that apply to kaloi too.

A large tank full of water is extremely heavy. A 6-kaki tank holds roughly 550–650 litres, so check floor strength, especially upstairs. Our tank size guide lists volumes by kaki.

Kaloi Forms: Red, Albino and Red-Tail

Ikan kaloi merah

"Kaloi merah" usually refers to red, pink or golden colour forms of the giant gourami. Care is the same as for the normal grey kaloi. Colour intensity varies a lot between fish, so look at real photos.

Albino kaloi

Pale pink-white with red eyes. Same care, and often more sensitive to strong sunlight in open ponds, so give shade.

Red-tail giant gourami (Osphronemus laticlavius)

A separate species, known from river basins in Sabah and listed as endangered. Adults have bright red fin edges. It's rare in the trade. If you see one, buy only captive-bred stock from a seller who can explain the source, and never take fish from the wild.

Ikan Kaloi Makan Apa?

Kaloi are omnivores. Young fish eat more protein; adults increasingly prefer plants.

Food Notes
Floating pellets for large fish Staple at every age
Leafy greens Kangkung, lettuce, other soft leaves; wash well
Fruit and veg Small amounts of banana, papaya, boiled sweet potato
Protein treats Prawns, earthworms, insects for juveniles

Find large pellets under food for cichlids, arowana and monster fish. Remove uneaten greens after a few hours, because rotting leaves foul the water. Wash vegetables from the market thoroughly to remove pesticide residue.

Tank Mates

Kaloi are generally calm but will eat any fish that fits in their mouth. Suitable companions for large tanks or ponds:

  • Other kaloi (watch for male rivalry)
  • Large plecos and other big catfish
  • Koi in large ponds (kaloi may compete at feeding time)
  • Large, peaceful fish such as silver dollars in big tanks

Avoid small fish and aggressive monster fish that might bully a slow-moving kaloi. Our oscar guide covers another large pet fish that needs the same planning.

Water Quality and Filtration

Kaloi are hardy, but big fish produce a lot of waste.

  • Filter big: a canister or top filter rated for at least twice the tank volume, or a pond filter.
  • Water changes: 30–50% weekly in tanks, plus regular top-ups in ponds.
  • Anti klorin: always treat tap water before it goes in.
  • Lid: kaloi can jump when startled.

Jangan Lepaskan Ikan Kaloi

Kaloi are widely farmed in Malaysia, but that doesn't mean releasing a pet is harmless. Released fish can carry disease, compete with wild fish and alter local populations, even when the species already occurs in the region. The Department of Fisheries (DOF) reports around 80 alien fish species established in Malaysian waterways, and release rules are set by each state. Negeri Sembilan, for example, has reported that only kuyu and haruan may be released into its rivers.

If your kaloi outgrows your setup, rehome it with another keeper who has a pond, or ask the seller for advice. Confirm current release rules with DOF Malaysia before doing anything with an unwanted fish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ikan kaloi makan apa?

How fast do kaloi grow?

Steadily over several years. Growth depends on space, food and water quality, but expect a juvenile to outgrow a 3-kaki tank within a year or two.

Can ikan kaloi live with koi fish?

In a large pond, often yes. Both are peaceful, though kaloi can be pushy at feeding time. Make sure the pond and filter can handle both fish loads.

Are kaloi friendly?

Yes. Many kaloi become very tame, recognise their owners and take food from the hand, which is why people keep them as pets.
