Ikan Oscar: Oscar Fish Care, Tank Size & What to Feed
The ikan oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a big, intelligent South American cichlid that recognises its owner and begs at the glass. It is easy to keep alive and hard to keep well: an adult reaches around 30 cm, so plan for a 4-kaki tank as the minimum for one oscar, a filter rated for two to three times that tank, weekly large water changes, and a pellet-based diet instead of live feeder fish. That 5 cm "baby oscar" grows fast, often reaching 15 cm within months.
Ikan Oscar Care Sheet
| Need | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Adult size | About 25–35 cm |
| Tank | 4 kaki (120×45×50 cm, ~230 L) for one; 5–6 kaki for a pair |
| Temperature | 25–30°C; Malaysian room temperature is fine |
| Water | Treated tap water; pH about 6.5–7.5; 30–50% weekly water change |
| Filtration | Large canister or top filter, ideally two; 6–10× tank volume per hour |
| Diet | Large cichlid pellets, plus prawns, earthworms, insects as treats |
| Temperament | Territorial, eats any fish that fits in its mouth |
| Lifespan | Often 10 years or more with good care |
| Beginner-friendly? | Yes, if you can commit to the tank and maintenance |
Tank Size in Kaki
| Tank | Real water | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 2 kaki | ~55 L | Juveniles only, for weeks, not months |
| 3 kaki | ~155 L | Short-term grow-out for a young oscar |
| 4 kaki | ~230 L | Minimum for one adult |
| 5 kaki | ~350 L | Comfortable for one, or a pair with care |
| 6 kaki | ~550 L | A pair plus large tank mates |
An adult oscar in a 3-kaki tank can barely turn around, and water quality crashes quickly. A full 4-kaki tank weighs well over 300 kg with glass and stand, so check your floor and use a proper cabinet. Our tank size guide has dimensions and weights.
Decor
Oscars dig and rearrange everything. Use sand or smooth gravel, a few large rocks or driftwood that can't be toppled, and a tight-fitting lid; oscars can jump. Live plants usually get uprooted, though anubias tied to wood sometimes survive.
Filtration for a Messy Eater
Oscars eat big meals and spit out bits, so their tanks foul much faster than a community tank of the same size. Malaysian keepers usually choose:
- Canister filters: large external units with plenty of biological media. Browse external filters.
- Top filters: cheap, high-capacity and easy to clean.
- Two filters: many keepers run a canister plus a top filter or sponge, so there's backup if one fails.
Add an air pump too. Warm Malaysian water holds less oxygen, and a large fish uses a lot of it, especially after a meal.
What to Feed an Oscar
Oscars are opportunistic carnivores. A healthy diet:
| Food | How often | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Large cichlid pellets | Daily staple | Choose a size the fish can swallow whole |
| Prawns / shrimp (no seasoning) | 1–2× a week | Shelled or whole |
| Earthworms, cengkerik (crickets) | Occasional | Clean, pesticide-free sources only |
| Frozen bloodworm, krill | Occasional | Good for juveniles |
| Blanched peas | Occasional | Fibre |
Find pellets under food for cichlids, arowana and monster fish. Feed juveniles twice a day and adults once a day or every other day. Remove leftovers within a few minutes.
Why not feeder fish?
Live feeder fish (cheap guppies or goldfish) are popular in Malaysia, but they are a common way to bring white spot, parasites and bacterial infections into a tank. Feeder goldfish are also fatty and contain thiaminase, an enzyme that can break down vitamin B1 if fed heavily. An oscar raised on pellets is healthier and easier to keep. If you do want live food, quarantine and gut-load your own feeders rather than buying a bag straight into the tank.
Oscar Varieties
- Tiger oscar: dark body with orange-red marbling; the most common form.
- Red oscar: mostly red-orange body.
- Ikan oscar albino: white body with orange or red markings, pink or red eyes. Care is the same, though some keepers find albinos more sensitive to bright light.
- Lemon / yellow and veil oscar: less common; veil forms have longer fins.

Tank Mates
Oscars eat anything that fits in their mouths, so tank mates need to be large and robust:
- Large plecos (bandaraya) and other armoured catfish
- Silver dollars in big tanks
- Similarly sized, not-too-aggressive cichlids such as severums
- Arowana, but only in very large tanks (6 kaki or more)
Avoid small community fish, slow long-finned fish and the calmer blood parrot in smaller tanks. Many keepers simply keep one oscar alone; it's a "pet fish" that interacts with its owner.
Health Problems
- Hole-in-the-head (HITH): small pits on the head and face, linked to poor water quality, high nitrate and poor diet. Improve water changes and feed quality pellets.
- Cloudy eyes: usually poor water quality.
- White spot: less common in pellet-fed oscars; see our white spot guide.
- "Sulking": oscars sometimes lie on their side and refuse food after a tank change or water change. Check water parameters; healthy oscars usually recover within a day or two.
Jangan Lepaskan ke Sungai
Oscars grow too big for many homes, and some owners are tempted to release them into a lake or drain. Don't. Malaysia already has around 80 alien fish species established in its waterways according to the Department of Fisheries (DOF), and release rules are set by each state: Perlis, for example, now fines people up to RM20,000 for releasing foreign fish into rivers without written permission. Large, predatory cichlids compete with and eat native fish.
If you can no longer keep your oscar, ask the seller or a local aquarium club to rehome it, or sell it to another keeper with a suitable tank. Confirm current rules with DOF Malaysia, since lists can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Ikan oscar makan apa?
How fast do oscars grow?
Quickly. With good food and water, a young oscar can grow several centimetres a month in its first year. Buy the big tank before the fish outgrows the small one.
Can oscars live with other fish?
Only with large, sturdy fish they can't swallow. Many oscars do best alone or with a large pleco.
Do oscars need a heater in Malaysia?
No. Malaysian room temperature suits them. Focus on filtration, oxygen and water changes.
