An external pond pump sits outside the water, beside the pond or in a pump pit, and pushes water through your filter, UV unit and return or waterfall. Unlike a submersible pump, the motor stays dry, which makes it easier to reach for servicing. Many large external pumps are designed for continuous, heavy-duty running. In Malaysia most people simply call it a pam kolam.
External pumps suit bigger setups: koi fish ponds of a few thousand litres or more, ponds with multi-chamber filters, and water features that need to lift water a fair height. FishyHub lists them from Malaysian sellers, with prices in RM, so you can compare specs side by side.
| External pump | Submersible pump | |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Outside the pond, dry | Inside the pond |
| Best for | Larger ponds, gravity or pressure filter systems | Small to medium ponds and fountains |
| Installation | Needs plumbing and a protected spot | Drop in and connect a hose |
| Servicing | Easy access to motor and strainer | Must be lifted out of the water |
| Heat into water | Motor heat stays out of the pond | Some motor heat goes into the water |
For koi fish ponds, a common rule of thumb is to move the full pond volume through the filter about once every hour or two. A 5,000 L pond would therefore need something like 2,500–5,000 L/h of real flow, after allowing for losses.
Head height is how high the pump can lift water. Every metre of lift, plus long pipe runs and bends, reduces the actual flow. Read the pump's flow curve, not just the maximum figure printed on the box.
Some external pumps must sit below the water level so water flows into them (flooded suction). Self-priming models can lift water from the pond on their own. Check which type you are buying before planning where it will sit.
A pond pump runs 24 hours a day, every day, so wattage shows up on your electricity bill. Comparing flow per watt between models is worthwhile.
Compare flow rate, maximum head, wattage, inlet and outlet sizes, voltage and whether the pump is self-priming. Ask the seller about spare parts availability and warranty terms, as these vary. Large pumps are heavy, so check delivery or self-collect options, particularly if you are in East Malaysia.
Some can, for example on large sump systems, but most aquarium setups use pumps designed for indoor use. Check the manufacturer's intended use.
The most common causes are a clogged pre-filter basket, a dirty impeller, air leaks on the suction side, or a dirty filter downstream. Clean these first before assuming the pump is faulty.
