Penapis Kolam Ikan: Pond Filter Systems and DIY Builds for Malaysian Koi Ponds

A good penapis kolam ikan (pond filter) does two jobs. Mechanical filtration traps solid waste so the water looks clear. Biological filtration grows beneficial bacteria that turn toxic ammonia from fish waste into much less harmful nitrate. Most Malaysian koi ponds add a UV clarifier to stop green water. Size the filter for your pond volume and fish load, and run water through it about once an hour for koi. You can buy a ready-made system or build a DIY filter from plastic drums or bins. This guide shows both, plus a cleaning schedule.

How a Pond Filter Works

Stage What it does Typical media Cleaning
1. Mechanical (pre-filter) Catches solid waste, leaves and uneaten food Brushes, coarse sponge, filter mat (Japanese mat), sieve Often: weekly or more
2. Biological Bacteria convert ammonia → nitrite → nitrate Ceramic rings, bio balls, lava rock, moving-bed media (K1-type) Rarely: rinse gently in pond water
3. Polishing (optional) Removes fine particles Fine filter wool / floss Replace or rinse often
4. UV clarifier (optional) Kills free-floating algae (green water) UV-C lamp in a sleeve Change the lamp as per the label; clean the quartz sleeve

Order matters: water should pass through mechanical media first. If solid waste reaches the bio media it clogs the media and smothers the bacteria.

Types of Penapis Kolam Ikan

Box / pressurised filters

All-in-one units for small to medium ponds. A pressurised filter can sit below or beside the pond and push water up to a waterfall. Many include a built-in UV.

Gravity-fed multi-chamber filters

These are common in Malaysian koi ponds. Water flows from a bottom drain by gravity into chambers (settlement, brushes, mats, bio media), then a pump returns it. They are very effective and easy to maintain, but they need space and plumbing at build time.

Drum filters

Self-cleaning rotating screens that remove fine solids automatically. They are expensive but popular with serious koi keepers because they cut maintenance.

Bog or plant filters

Shallow gravel beds planted with marginal plants, where water passes through roots. These look natural and absorb nitrate, and work best combined with a mechanical stage.

Sizing Your Pond Filter

Pond volume Fish load Filter approach
Up to ~1,000 L Goldfish / small fish Box filter with built-in UV
1,000–3,000 L A few koi Larger box or pressurised filter, or DIY 2–3 bin system
3,000–8,000 L Koi collection Gravity multi-chamber or DIY drum series with UV
8,000 L+ Heavily stocked koi Multi-chamber or drum filter, bottom drain, separate UV

Tips:

  • Size for fish load, not just volume. Koi produce far more waste than goldfish of the same count.
  • Go bigger than the box says. Manufacturers' ratings often assume light stocking in cooler climates. Malaysian heat speeds up metabolism and waste.
  • Match the pump. The flow should suit the filter's rated maximum. See our pond pump guide.

Cara Buat Penapis Kolam Ikan (DIY Bin or Drum Filter)

A simple, effective DIY gravity or pump-fed filter uses 2–4 plastic drums (tong) or large bins in series.

What you need

  • 2–4 food-grade plastic drums or bins with lids (UV-stable if outdoors)
  • PVC pipes, bulkhead or tank connectors (25–50 mm), and elbows
  • Mechanical media: brushes, coarse sponge, filter mat
  • Biological media: ceramic rings, bio balls or moving-bed media
  • A pond pump sized for your pond
  • Optional: an inline UV clarifier, plus an air pump and airstone for the bio chamber

Build steps

  1. Plan the flow: pond → pump → drum 1 → drum 2 → drum 3 → back to the pond (by gravity, so set each drum slightly lower than the last, or all above pond level).
  2. Drill and fit connectors near the top of each drum for the outlet, and connect them with pipe.
  3. Drum 1 (mechanical): water enters at the bottom or through a spray bar, passes brushes and coarse sponge, and settles sludge. Add a bottom drain valve for flushing.
  4. Drum 2 (fine mechanical / mat): filter mat or finer sponge.
  5. Drum 3 (biological): fill with bio media. An airstone here gives the bacteria extra oxygen, which helps in hot weather.
  6. Return line: pipe back into the pond, ideally over a small waterfall for aeration.
  7. Add UV inline between the pump and the first drum, or after the bio stage, within its flow rating.
  8. Leak-test with water before adding media.
  9. Cycle for 2–4 weeks before adding fish, using a bacteria starter if you wish.

Safety: keep all electrics on an RCD/ELCB-protected outdoor circuit, and have a qualified electrician wire permanent fittings.

UV Clarifiers for Green Water

Malaysia's strong sun makes green water (free-floating algae) common in ponds. A UV clarifier kills these algae as water passes through it, often clearing a pond within days.

  • UV won't remove string algae (hair algae) attached to walls and rocks. That needs nutrient control and manual removal.
  • Flow matters: too fast reduces contact time. Follow the rated flow.
  • Lamps weaken even while still glowing, so replace them on the schedule the manufacturer gives.

For more on algae, see our lumut kolam ikan guide.

Cleaning Schedule

Task Frequency How
Rinse brushes / coarse sponge Weekly (twice weekly in heavy feeding) Hose off away from the pond, or rinse in pond water
Flush settlement chamber / drum bottom valve Weekly Open the valve for a few seconds
Rinse filter mat Every 1–2 weeks Rinse in pond water
Bio media Every few months, only if clogged Gently swish in pond water, never chlorinated tap water
UV sleeve Every 1–3 months Wipe the quartz sleeve clean
UV lamp As per manufacturer Replace
Partial water change Weekly, 10–20% Use anti klorin on tap water

Never clean all stages at once, because you'll crash your bacteria colony and get an ammonia spike.

Testing the Water

A filter is only as good as your water results. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and KH regularly with a water test kit, especially after heavy rain (soft rainwater can drop KH and pH) and in very hot spells. Sudden koi deaths or jumping often trace back to water quality, which our koi jumping guide explains.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean my pond filter? Clean mechanical media weekly and bio media only when clogged, always rinsing in pond water.

Do I need a UV clarifier? Not strictly, but in sunny Malaysian gardens it is the easiest way to prevent green water.

Can I use tap water to wash bio media? No. Chlorine kills beneficial bacteria. Rinse in a bucket of pond water.
