Cara Buat Kolam Ikan: DIY Fish Pond Guide for Malaysian Homes

Here is cara buat kolam ikan (how to build a fish pond) for a Malaysian terrace, semi-D or bungalow, in short. Choose your pond type (cement, liner or ready-made fibreglass), dig at least 60–90 cm deep so the water stays cooler in our heat, plan the filter and pump before you dig, add an overflow pipe for monsoon rain, and cure cement properly so lime doesn't push the pH sky-high. Then let the pond run for a few weeks before adding fish. The steps, tables and checklists below cover the whole build.

Step 1: Decide What the Pond Is For

The fish you plan to keep decide the size and depth:

Fish Minimum volume Depth Notes
Guppies, platies, ricefish 100–300 L 30–45 cm Good for mini ponds
Goldfish (comet, wakin) 500–1,000 L 45–60 cm Hardy pond goldfish
Koi fish (a few) 2,000 L and up 90 cm and up (1–1.2 m is better) Koi grow to 60 cm+ and need a strong filter

For a small patio setup, see our mini pond guide. For koi-specific advice, read our koi fish pond guide.

Step 2: Pick the Right Spot

  • Partial shade. Full afternoon sun heats shallow ponds well above 32°C and causes green water. Aim for shade from about midday onwards, or plan a shade net or pergola.
  • Away from big trees. Falling leaves rot and roots can crack cement.
  • Near a power point, but keep electrics safe (see Step 6).
  • Where you can see it. You'll enjoy it more, and spot herons and cats sooner.
  • Check drainage. Avoid low spots where rainwater from the compound flows in, as runoff can carry fertiliser and pesticides.
  • Check with your housing management or local council if you're in a gated community or planning major structural work.

Step 3: Choose the Pond Type

Type Pros Cons Best for
Cement / concrete (kolam simen) Permanent, any shape, strong Needs curing and sealing; can crack; hardest to change later Permanent koi ponds
Pond liner (EPDM / PVC) in a dug hole Flexible shape, cheaper, quick Can be punctured; UV degrades exposed edges Natural-look ponds
Pre-formed fibreglass (kolam fiber) Ready to use, smooth, easy to clean Fixed shapes and sizes; transport Small–medium goldfish and koi ponds
Canvas / tarpaulin (kolam kanvas) Cheap, portable, above-ground Shorter lifespan in sun Temporary, quarantine, growing out

Step 4: Cara Buat Kolam Ikan Guna Simen (Cement Pond)

Cement ponds are the most popular choice for Malaysian landed homes. A typical build:

  1. Mark and dig the shape, adding 10–15 cm on every side for walls and floor.
  2. Lay a compacted base with a layer of sand or crusher run.
  3. Put in plumbing first: a bottom drain (ideal for koi), a return pipe from the filter, and an overflow pipe set just below the rim.
  4. Reinforce with steel mesh (BRC) for the floor and walls, especially for deep koi ponds.
  5. Pour or build the walls with concrete or brick and render, then plaster smoothly.
  6. Waterproof with a pond-safe waterproofing coating. Check that the product label says it is safe for fish.
  7. Cure the cement (see below) before any fish go in.

For big or deep ponds, or anything close to the house foundation, consider hiring a contractor.

Curing cement: don't skip this

Fresh cement leaches lime, which can push the pH to 10 or more. That is deadly to fish. To cure:

  • Fill, soak and drain the pond several times over 2–4 weeks.
  • Test the pH with a water test kit after each fill.
  • Add fish only once the pH stays stable at around 7–8 for a week. A pond-safe sealant coat reduces leaching too.

Step 5: Filtration and Pumps

Plan for the whole pond volume to pass through the filter about once every 1–2 hours (every hour for koi).

  • Mechanical stage: brushes, sponges or filter mats catch solid waste.
  • Biological stage: bio media (ceramic rings, bio balls, moving-bed media) grow bacteria that turn ammonia into nitrate.
  • UV clarifier: optional, but very effective against green water in sunny Malaysian gardens.

Read our pond filter guide and pond pump guide. Browse external pond pumps and pond equipment.

Aeration: warm water holds less oxygen, and oxygen is lowest before dawn. An air pump with airstones, or a waterfall, is cheap insurance, especially for koi.

Step 6: Electrical Safety

  • Use outdoor-rated, waterproof sockets.
  • Connect to a circuit protected by an RCD/ELCB (earth-leakage protection).
  • Hire a qualified electrician for permanent wiring.
  • Run cables through conduit and away from where people walk.
  • Make a "drip loop" in cables so water can't run into plugs.

Step 7: Plan for Malaysian Weather

  • Monsoon rain: heavy rain can overflow a pond and wash fish out, and soft rainwater can crash the pH. An overflow pipe with a mesh cover is essential. See our monsoon pond guide.
  • Heat: depth plus shade keeps water cooler.
  • Haze: reduce feeding and boost aeration during jerebu. See our haze guide.
  • Mosquitoes: moving water and fish that eat larvae prevent Aedes breeding.

Step 8: Fill, Cycle and Stock Slowly

  1. Fill the pond and add anti klorin, because tap water is chlorinated.
  2. Run the filter for 2–4 weeks, adding a bacteria starter if you like.
  3. Test for ammonia and nitrite. Add fish only when both read zero.
  4. Add a few fish at a time, and quarantine new koi or goldfish first.
  5. Add plants (water lilies, marginal plants) for shade and to compete with algae. Never release pond plants or fish into drains or rivers.

Cost Factors

Prices in RM vary widely, so we won't quote numbers. The main cost drivers are:

  • Pond size and depth (digging and concrete)
  • Contractor vs DIY
  • Filter system (DIY bins vs commercial multi-chamber or drum filters)
  • Pump power and electricity use
  • Extras: UV clarifier, waterfall, lighting, netting

Frequently Asked Questions

Cara buat kolam ikan guna simen supaya ikan tak mati? Selepas simen siap, rendam kolam dan buang airnya beberapa kali selama 2 hingga 4 minggu. Test pH air sehingga stabil sekitar 7 hingga 8 sebelum masukkan ikan.

Do I need an overflow pipe? Yes. Malaysian downpours can overflow ponds quickly. An overflow with a mesh cover stops fish being washed out.

How long before I can add fish to a new pond? Usually 2–4 weeks for a cement pond, once the pH is stable and ammonia and nitrite read zero.
