Tankmates: Not a general community fish, but one male can share a calm, well-planted tank with peaceful, non-nipping, non-long-finned species (e.g. small rasboras, Corydoras, otocinclus) and snails. Avoid other labyrinth fish, fin nippers (tiger barbs, some tetras) and fancy-finned livebearers. Bettas often hunt shrimplets and may attack adult cherry shrimp; larger Amano shrimp usually fare better.
Feeding: Insectivores/micropredators. Overfeeding is a common cause of bloat and poor water quality. Wild-caught fish may need live or frozen food before accepting pellets.

Alien bettas are hybrids between the domestic betta (Betta splendens) and wild species from the same group, such as Betta smaragdina, Betta mahachaiensis and Betta imbellis. The result is a short-finned fish with a wild shape and heavy metallic scaling in green, turquoise, blue or copper, a look that seems almost otherworldly, hence the name. Locally they're often sold as ikan laga alien.
FishyHub lists alien bettas from Malaysian breeders and hobbyists, with prices in RM. They are hardy, active and easy to keep, so they suit both beginners and keepers who already have a few plakats and want something different.
The wild parent gives alien bettas a slimmer, more streamlined body and often a calmer temperament than pure fighting lines. Many keepers find them more active swimmers too.
The iridescent scaling covers the body, head and often the fins. Colour shifts with light, so a fish that looks blue in one photo may look green in another. Good lighting brings it out.
Breeders may describe fish by generation (F1, F2 and so on) or by the wild species used. Later generations bred for stability tend to look more uniform. It's worth asking the seller what the line is.

Treat tap water with anti klorin, keep the tank out of direct sun, and add some daun ketapang and floating plants. Alien bettas show their best colour in slightly tinted water with subdued light, similar to the wild fish's habitat.
Alien bettas are bred in captivity, so you don't need wild-caught fish to enjoy the wild look. Malaysia is home to around 28 native Betta species, several of them endangered, so if you're interested in pure wild species, choose captive-bred fish from responsible breeders. Never release bettas or their hybrids into streams or ditches, where they can mix with wild populations.
Ordinary bettas usually sell for around RM5–10, while well-scaled alien bettas from established lines are often priced higher. Before you buy, check:
Bettas travel well. For Sabah and Sarawak, ask the seller about delivery before ordering.
Males still fight other males, but many keepers find them a little less aggressive towards tankmates than pure fighting lines.
Metallic scales reflect light, so colour changes with lighting, viewing angle and mood.
Browse alien bettas from sellers across Malaysia, compare photos and RM prices, and find a fish with the scaling you like. You might also like crowntail and wild betta categories, plus daun ketapang and betta pellets.
