• Water Conditions: The Kung Rosetail Grizzle is a unique Betta splendens variety that has been selectively bred to thrive in high-pH, alkaline water. Unlike many bettas that prefer soft, acidic conditions, this strain requires a stable pH range of 7.5 to 8.5. Water hardness should be moderate to hard, with a general hardness (GH) of 8–12 dGH and carbonate hardness (KH) of 6–10 dKH. Temperature must be maintained between 24°C and 28°C (75°F–82°F) using a reliable aquarium heater, as these fish are tropical and sensitive to sudden temperature drops. The tank should be fully cycled before introduction, with zero ammonia and nitrite, and nitrates kept below 20 ppm. Because high pH can increase the toxicity of ammonia, excellent filtration and regular water changes are critical. A gentle water flow is essential—rosetail bettas have heavy, flowing fins that make swimming laborious, so avoid strong currents from power filters. A sponge filter driven by an air pump is ideal. Also, ensure the tank has a tight-fitting lid, as bettas are known jumpers. When performing water changes, match the new water’s temperature and pH precisely to avoid stress. Using remineralised RO/DI water or a buffer specifically designed for alkaline cichlid tanks can help maintain consistency. Avoid driftwood, Indian almond leaves, or peat moss, as these release tannins that lower pH. Instead, use inert rocks like limestone, Texas holey rock, or crushed coral to naturally buffer the water and keep pH high. Regular testing with a liquid test kit is recommended, as pH swings can lead to fin rot, lethargy, and immune suppression in this fin-heavy variety.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Due to its aggressive temperament, the Kung Rosetail Grizzle should ideally be kept as a solitary specimen in a dedicated tank. Male bettas are highly territorial, and this line is no exception—they will flare, chase, and attack other bettas, especially other males or any fish with long, flowing fins that resemble a rival. Even females can be harassed. If you wish to keep tank mates, you must choose species that can tolerate high pH and are either too fast to be caught or too well-armoured to be bullied. Suitable candidates include certain livebearers such as mollies (Poecilia sphenops) and platies (Xiphophorus maculatus), which actually prefer hard, alkaline water. However, be aware that livebearers can be nippy and may nip at the betta’s long fins. Bottom-dwelling species like Corydoras catfish (e.g., Corydoras paleatus) can work in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots, but they prefer slightly softer water; they may adapt but monitor closely. Kuhli loaches (Pangio kuhlii) are another option, as they are nocturnal and hide during the day. Avoid all tetras, rasboras, and danios, as most prefer acidic water and will stress in high pH. Also avoid guppies, fancy goldfish, angelfish, and any other betta. Invertebrates like Nerite snails or Amano shrimp can be kept, but the betta may eat smaller shrimp. Mystery snails might be attacked. If you attempt a community, use a tank of at least 80 litres (20 gallons) with dense planting, caves, and broken lines of sight. Always have a backup plan to separate the betta if aggression escalates. Remember, the wellbeing of your fish comes first—solitary housing is the safest and most stress-free option for this stunning but feisty betta.
• Feeding Habits: The Kung Rosetail Grizzle is a carnivorous micropredator, and its diet must reflect that. In the wild, bettas feed on insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton. In captivity, offer a varied diet of high-quality, protein-rich foods. Staple foods should include specially formulated betta pellets (e.g., Hikari Betta Bio-Gold, New Life Spectrum Betta) that contain at least 40% crude protein. Supplement with frozen or freeze-dried treats such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and blackworms. Live foods like grindal worms, vinegar eels, and baby brine shrimp are excellent for stimulating natural hunting behaviour and enhancing colour. Feed small amounts two to three times daily—only as much as the fish can consume in 2–3 minutes. Overfeeding is a common mistake that leads to obesity, swim bladder disorders, and fin rot, which is especially problematic for rosetail bettas. Because their fins are heavy, they may struggle to swim up to the surface to feed; consider offering sinking pellets or using a feeding ring to keep food accessible. Soak freeze-dried foods in tank water for 5–10 minutes before feeding to prevent bloating. Once a week, fast your betta for 24 hours to allow its digestive system to clear. Avoid flake foods, as they often contain fillers and can foul the water. Also, never feed live tubifex worms from questionable sources, as they can carry parasites. If you keep tank mates, ensure the betta gets its share—target feed with a pipette if necessary. A well-fed Kung Rosetail Grizzle will display vibrant grizzle patterning and full, flowing fins, but overfeeding will dull its colours and shorten its lifespan. Monitor body condition: a slight belly curve is healthy, but a distended abdomen indicates overfeeding.
• Care Requirements: Caring for a Kung Rosetail Grizzle requires dedication, as its elaborate rosetail fins and specific water needs make it more demanding than a standard betta. First, tank size: a minimum of 20 litres (5 gallons) for a single fish, but 30–40 litres is better to dilute waste and allow swimming space without damaging fins. The tank must be fully cycled and mature before adding the betta. Use a gentle sponge filter and an adjustable heater. Lighting should be moderate, and a dark substrate will help showcase the grizzle pattern. Provide plenty of hiding spots using smooth rocks, caves, and live or silk plants—avoid plastic plants with sharp edges that can tear fins. Because this variety is prone to fin rot and fin curling, maintain pristine water quality: perform 25–30% water changes weekly, vacuum the substrate, and rinse filter media in old tank water. Test pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate regularly. High pH (7.5–8.5) must be stable; use a buffer or crushed coral in the filter to prevent crashes. Acclimation is crucial: drip-acclimatise the fish over 45–60 minutes, especially if the store’s water parameters differ. Quarantine new arrivals for 2–4 weeks to watch for ich, velvet, or fin rot. Once in the main tank, observe daily for signs of stress: clamped fins, lethargy, loss of appetite, or white edges on fins. Treat fin rot early with clean water and a broad-spectrum antibiotic if needed. Because rosetail bettas are heavy, they may rest on the bottom or on plant leaves—this is normal, but ensure they can reach the surface to breathe. Avoid strong currents and sudden temperature changes. Also, keep a lid on the tank, as they jump. Lifespan is typically 3–5 years with excellent care. Breeding is possible but challenging due to the heavy fins; males may struggle to embrace females. If you plan to breed, condition both fish with live foods and provide a shallow spawning tank with Indian almond leaves (but note that this lowers pH, so adjust accordingly). Overall, this is a rewarding but advanced fish for aquarists who can meet its specific needs.
