• Water Conditions: High pH is Non-Negotiable – The King HMPK Nebula is a specialised variant that demands alkaline water conditions. Unlike standard Betta splendens that prefer slightly acidic to neutral water, this regal fighter requires a pH range of 7.5 to 8.5. Failing to maintain this elevated pH can lead to chronic stress, suppressed immunity, and a dulling of its remarkable iridescent "nebula" colouration – a direct reflection of its poor health. To achieve this, you may need to utilise buffers such as crushed coral substrate, limestone rock, or commercially available pH-raising additives. Stability is paramount; avoid swings of more than 0.2 pH units per day.
• Water Hardness and Temperature – In conjunction with high pH, this Betta thrives in moderately hard to hard water (dGH of 10-20). The presence of dissolved minerals helps this fish maintain proper osmotic balance and appears to enhance its natural vigour. Temperature should be firmly maintained between 26°C and 28°C (79°F – 82°F). A reliable, thermometer-verified heater is essential, as any drop below 24°C will severely compromise its metabolism and make it susceptible to diseases like ich and fin rot. Always use a liquid test kit to monitor ammonia and nitrite – these must remain at 0 ppm, while nitrate should stay below 20 ppm.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Proceed with Extreme Caution – The aggressive temperament of the King HMPK Nebula cannot be overstated. This is not a community fish by default. It is highly territorial and will readily attack anything it perceives as a rival or threat. Absolutely do not house it with other bettas, gouramis, or any fish with similar body shapes or flowing fins. Also avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs or serpae tetras, which will stress and physically harm the Nebula. If you choose to attempt a community tank, you need a spacious aquarium of at least 20 gallons with dense planting, driftwood, and rockwork to create visual barriers. Suitable, very peaceful bottom-dwellers like Corydoras catfish, otocinclus, or larger, non-fin-nipping snails (nerite snails) may be considered, but you must have a backup plan to isolate the Betta if aggression flares. Many experienced keepers conclude that a species-only tank is the safest and most rewarding approach.
• Feeding Habits: A Carnivorous Appetite – As an obligate carnivore, the King HMPK Nebula requires a protein-rich diet to maintain its impressive size and musculature. Offer a high-quality betta-specific pelleted food as the staple, choosing pellets large enough for its bigger mouth (this is a King, after all). Supplement this dry diet with a rotation of protein-rich foods to stimulate natural hunting instincts. Frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp (enriched with spirulina), daphnia, and white mosquito larvae are all excellent choices. Feed small portions two to three times a day, providing only what the fish can consume within two minutes. Overfeeding leads to bloating and constipation, which in bettas can be fatal. A weekly fasting day is recommended to keep its digestive system clear and healthy.
• Care Requirements: The Art of Keeping a King – While the King HMPK Nebula is a hardy specimen when conditions are met, it is not suited for beginners. A minimum tank size of 15 gallons is recommended for a single specimen to provide adequate swimming room and stable water parameters; anything smaller will result in dangerous ammonia spikes and cramped conditions. Filtration must be gentle – a sponge filter or a low-flow hang-on-back filter is ideal, as the Nebula is not a strong swimmer. Ensure the tank is tightly lidded, as these are notorious jumpers from even the smallest gap.
• Enrichment and Territorial Management – Because of its aggressive disposition, the Nebula needs mental and physical stimulation to prevent boredom and stereotypic behaviours (such as tail biting). Incorporate live plants (Java fern, Anubias), floating plants like frogbit to diffuse light, and a cave or betta log for retreat. Rearranging decor during water changes provides enrichment. When performing water changes, do so with water pre-treated and temperature-matched to the tank – this is critical for high-pH fishes.
• Health Monitoring and Long-term Care – Monitor the Nebula daily for signs of stress, which manifests as clamped fins, loss of appetite, or fading colour. Given the high-pH environment, be diligent about water changes of 25-30% weekly to dilute waste and maintain alkalinity. With impeccable care, this King can live for 3–5 years, rewarding its keeper with every flash of its celestial colouration. Note that this fish expects high pH but hates fluctuations – a high-quality pH meter or frequent test strip checks are indispensable tools for keeping this living gem thriving.
