In the wild, these fish carve out defined territories and will aggressively defend them against conspecifics and similarly shaped tankmates. You will observe fascinating courtship and spawning rituals between the pair, but severe fin-nipping, chasing, and even fatal attacks can occur if they are housed with other small, slow-moving, or flashy fish. We strongly recommend keeping this pair alone in a dedicated species tank, or with larger, robust, bottom-dwelling fish that can hold their own. Do not attempt to house them with smaller tetras, guppies, or angelfish – the results will be devastating.
• Water Conditions & Chemistry: Unlike many ornamental aquarium fish that prefer soft, acidic water, the King Feathertail thrives in hard, alkaline conditions with a high pH range of 7.8 to 8.6. They originate from mineral-rich lakes and rivers where dissolved calcium and magnesium keep the water buffered and stable. Aim for a carbonate hardness (KH) of 10–18 dKH and a general hardness (GH) of 12–20 dGH to prevent pH crashes. Water temperature should be maintained between 24°C and 28°C. Excellent filtration and regular water changes of 25–30% weekly are non-negotiable, as these fish produce significant waste and are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. A matured biological filter before introduction is essential for long-term health and vibrant colouration.
• Aquarium Setup & Environment: Because of their aggressive nature and need for personal space, we recommend a minimum tank size of 120 litres for a single pair. Dense planting with hardy species such as Vallisneria, Java fern, and Anubias will provide visual barriers and break line-of-sight aggression. Overfeeding will pollute the water and elevate nitrate levels, which is the most common cause of disease in high-pH species.
• Sexing & Spawning Behaviour: Sexing mature King Feathertails is typically straightforward. Males are usually larger, display more intense colouration, and develop longer, more elaborate feathery fins with pointed dorsal and anal rays. Females are slightly smaller with shorter, rounder fins and a fuller belly, especially when gravid. When a bonded pair is ready to spawn, the male will intensify in colour, perform lateral displays, and lead the female to a cleaned, flattened surface. Courtship involves lip-locking and trembling. The female will deposit a clutch of adhesive eggs, which the male fertilises. The male may guard the eggs aggressively; a sheltered cave allows the female to recover. Fry can be raised on finely crushed flake and baby brine shrimp after free-swimming.
