Betta (HMPK Combie)

The HMPK Combie is a show-stopping Halfmoon Plakat betta with a compact tail and vivid colour — an ideal centrepiece for a heated, filtered nano aquarium.

• Water Conditions: The HMPK Combie is a tropical labyrinth fish and needs stable, warm water to thrive. Aim for a temperature of 24–28°C, with 26°C being the sweet spot for most home aquariums. A reliable, adjustable heater is essential — bettas are ectothermic and chill easily, and prolonged exposure below 22°C weakens the immune system and invites fin rot and ich. Target a pH of 6.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (2–12 dGH); the species is adaptable, but consistency matters far more than chasing a "perfect" number. Ammonia and nitrite must read 0 ppm at all times, with nitrate kept below 20 ppm through regular water changes. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter, a small internal filter or a baffled hang-on-back unit is ideal, because heavy current exhausts long-finned bettas and can encourage fin nipping. Keep the tank covered: bettas are accomplished jumpers and will happily launch themselves through an open gap. A dark substrate, indian almond leaves or other botanicals, and dimmer lighting all help the fish settle and show their best colour.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Plakat bettas are more muscular and mobile than their long-finned cousins, so they generally cope better in a community setting — but they are also often more assertive, so choose companions thoughtfully. A single betta should be the only betta in the tank; males must never be housed together, and male/female pairings only work temporarily for breeding. Truly peaceful, mid-to-upper water schooling fish are the safest bet: chili and exclamation point rasboras, ember tetras, green neon tetras, and small harlequin rasboras. Bottom dwellers such as pygmy corydoras, kuhli loaches and otocinclus are excellent, as they occupy a different zone entirely and keep to themselves. Nerite snails and amano shrimp usually work well and help with algae. Avoid known fin nippers including serpae tetras, tiger barbs, buenos aires tetras and most danios, as they will shred fins. Also avoid other gouramis and other labyrinth fish, large or boisterous cichlids, goldfish, and any fish small enough to be swallowed. Cherry shrimp and small snails may be treated as snacks, so stock accordingly. Always add tank mates before or alongside the betta, and provide plenty of plants and hardscape to break up sight lines and define territories.
• Feeding Habits: The HMPK Combie is an obligate carnivore with a short digestive tract, so protein-rich foods are essential and bulky plant matter should be avoided. A high-quality betta pellet should form the staple diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis, daphnia and cyclops to promote vibrant colour, robust fin growth and good conditioning. Feed two to three small meals a day, offering only what the fish can finish within roughly two minutes. Soak pellets for a few minutes before feeding to reduce the risk of bloating and swim bladder issues, and remove any uneaten food promptly to protect water quality. Variety is key: a monotonous diet of dry food alone often leads to constipation and dull colouration. Many keepers fast their betta for one day a week to allow the digestive system to rest — a useful habit if the fish looks slightly bloated. Overfeeding is by far the most common husbandry mistake with this species, so err on the side of underfeeding rather than overfeeding.
• Care Requirements: Provide a minimum of 20 litres for a single betta, with 40 litres or more being far easier to keep stable and much better suited to a community setup. Cycle the tank fully before adding the fish, and acclimatise your HMPK Combie using the drip method or by floating the bag and gradually adding tank water over 20–30 minutes. Carry out a 25–30% water change weekly using temperature-matched, dechlorinated water, and vacuum the substrate to remove waste. A densely planted tank with floating plants, caves and driftwood gives the fish natural cover and reduces stress. Because plakat bettas have shorter fins than halfmoon or veiltail forms, they are less prone to fin damage and generally swim more actively — but they still need a lid, gentle flow and a calm environment. Watch for early signs of disease: clamped fins, lethargy, loss of appetite, white spots, or a dull, dusty appearance that may indicate velvet. Quarantine any new arrivals before adding them to the main tank, and never use soap or household cleaners on aquarium equipment. With good water quality and a varied diet, a well-cared-for HMPK Combie can live three to five years and will reward you with striking colour and constant personality.
