AOC Lace (RARE) — a striking, aggressive cichlid for hard, alkaline water. Reaches 5–6cm. Ideal for experienced aquarists with species tanks.

• Water Conditions: The AOC Lace is a hard-water specialist that will not thrive in soft, acidic conditions. Aim for a pH between 7.8 and 8.6, a general hardness (GH) of 10–20 dGH, and a carbonate hardness (KH) of 6–12 dKH. Temperature should be maintained between 24–27°C (75–81°F). Stability is critical — fluctuations in pH or temperature can trigger stress, aggression, and disease. Use a good quality cichlid salt or marine buffer to replicate the mineral-rich waters of the African Rift Lakes. Ensure high oxygenation through a powerful filter or airstone, as these fish come from highly oxygenated environments. Avoid the use of CO2 injection, which can lower pH. Perform 20–30% weekly water changes with pre-treated, temperature-matched water to keep nitrates low. Never introduce this fish to a mature tank with soft water; acclimatise slowly using the drip method to avoid osmotic shock.
• Suitable Tank Mates: Due to their aggressive and territorial nature, AOC Lace should not be kept in a general community aquarium. They are best maintained in a species-only setup, or with other robust, hard-water cichlids of similar size and temperament from Lake Tanganyika or Lake Malawi. Good companions include small mbuna, shell-dwellers, and other rock-dwelling cichlids that can hold their own. Avoid slow-moving, long-finned, or timid fish such as guppies, bettas, or angelfish — they will be bullied or killed. Bottom-dwellers like Synodontis catfish can work if they are large enough to avoid being harassed. If keeping a group, provide a ratio of one male to multiple females and ensure the tank is large enough (at least 100 litres) with plenty of visual barriers. Never mix with similar-looking species, as crossbreeding and extreme aggression can occur. Always monitor interactions closely, especially during feeding and spawning periods.
• Feeding Habits: The AOC Lace is an opportunistic omnivore with a strong carnivorous leaning. In the wild, they feed on small crustaceans, insect larvae, and zooplankton. In captivity, offer a varied diet to maintain vibrant colours and robust health. High-quality sinking cichlid pellets should form the staple, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia, bloodworm, and cyclops. They are aggressive feeders and will readily accept food from the water column, but sinking pellets ensure that bottom-dwelling tank mates also get their share. Feed small portions two to three times daily, only as much as they can consume within two minutes. Overfeeding leads to obesity, poor water quality, and increased aggression. Remove any uneaten food immediately. Occasionally offer a spirulina-based flake to provide plant matter, though this should not exceed 20% of the diet. During conditioning for breeding, increase the frequency of live foods. Always thaw frozen foods before feeding to prevent digestive issues.
• Care Requirements: Caring for AOC Lace requires commitment and attention to detail. A minimum tank size of 80–100 litres is recommended for a small group, with a larger tank (150 litres+) if keeping multiple males. The aquascape should include plenty of rocky caves, crevices, and shells to provide territories and hiding spots. A sandy substrate is ideal, as they may sift through it. Strong filtration is essential to handle the high bioload and maintain pristine water quality. Use a canister filter or a sump with mechanical and biological media. Regular maintenance is non-negotiable: test water parameters weekly, perform 25% water changes, and vacuum the substrate to remove detritus. These fish are notorious jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is mandatory. Quarantine new additions for at least two weeks to prevent introducing disease. Observe behaviour daily — lip-locking, chasing, and fin-nipping are signs of aggression that may require rearranging decor or separating individuals. With proper care, AOC Lace can live for 5–8 years, rewarding you with their fascinating behaviour and stunning appearance.
• Tank Setup and Decor: To replicate their natural habitat, create a rocky environment with plenty of vertical space and caves. Use dark-coloured rocks like lava rock or slate to contrast with their lace-like pattern. A sand substrate in a light beige or white tone will help highlight their colours. Add empty snail shells if you wish to encourage natural shell-dwelling behaviour, though this species may not use them for breeding. Lighting should be moderate to high to promote algae growth on rocks, which they may graze on. Water flow should be moderate but not overpowering. Keep the tank in a quiet location to reduce stress. Avoid overcrowding, as this intensifies aggression. A well-planned setup not only keeps your fish healthy but also showcases their unique beauty, making them a centrepiece for any dedicated cichlid keeper.
